I think people's feelings on this matter partly depend on whether you measure your happiness relative to that of others or you find your own absolute happiness. I have sold things on here and in other places very cheaply in the past, normally because I have bought them for a similar price and more often than not sell at a loss. I've always been happy to do so and couldn't care less what the new owner chooses to do with the item. I don't get jealous or infected by someone else's greed. When I'm buying I research what I'm after and know what I'm willing to pay for it. Everyone is free to choose. I understand it's important to keep markets in check etc and there are some items I think are grossly over inflated in price beyond belief, from vintage Fenders down to Deep Impact pedals, but that's the price you pay for being unoriginal!). It's my choice to trade generously as it is other sellers choice to trade selfishly. Dan
Great post.
I don't buy and sell on here purely to make a profit, however if i want to move a piece of gear on, i'll sell it at what i perceive to be the market value. I'll buy and sell on ebay for a profit, but not on here. That's not to say I wouldn't buy something a for a good price, intending to play it, and then sell it off for a profit a few months later, having not gotten on with it as well as i would have hoped. I've done that once before in a big way, and i contacted the previous owner about it, and he was fully aware of the value of the bass and totally happy for me to do so, as was the buyer. As it's basschat though, i'm more than happy for people to haggle a little, as you guys say, it is a community. I can't afford to let things go for silly prices though, so i don't. If i was better off, then maybe i would be more generous, but that's mot the case, and i'm sure many people on here can appreciate that.
You've touched upon something very important to the thread, it's whether or not it was originally purchased with the intent to resell or to play that makes a big difference. Trying to prove it is something else though - if it comes back onto the market within a short time scale it is more likely to be the former but not necessarily so.
This made me think bass lessons with free workshop use as payment? Also, what an awesome bass. Everytime i spotted that in your sig it interested me Liam
Ha ha yeah. I don't think Alan really needs lessons, he's just being modest (I'm sure he's busy enough building fine basses to bother playing anyway)... oh and I've just built a modest wee workshop (surf green exterior of course) then take into account that there's a couple of hundred miles or so between us and it becomes even less likely. Nice bit of lateral thought though. Cheers for the compliment. It is a tad awesome.
Have a look at the Alembic site - they seem to re-attach severed heads with no problems, partly because the glue joint often gives in an accident, and this makes for a clean break.
Which is odd considering that a correctly mated glue joint is stronger than the wood itself.
I've got individual bridge pieces on my Shuker. I think the idea is that they allow the string to vibrate without any connection to the saddles for the other strings, supposedly giving a more defined sound. To be honest, while they look cool, I doubt they make any real difference to the sound.
See.

I doubt if you'll get anyone to agree with this because it goes against bass bridge urban myth and word of mouth hocus-pocus but I built myself a Jazz with individual bridges - it sustains forever... why I don't know and why you'd want a bass to sustain for ever I don't know either but it's there if you want it. I've seen Jon put Schaller 2000's on some of his basses. If you're down with the chunky modern look get him to put one on yours. They are fantastic bridges, tonnes of mass (for it's small footprint), fantastically adjustable and very handy with how the strings top load into it. I had one waiting to go onto my next build but a genuine G&L bridge came up before I got a chance to install it. It will go onto my next bass though.
I think looks are important to everyone to varying degrees or we'd all just pick the first one off the wall. Nobody I know tries every bass in the shop so looks must be factor. I've stripped a couple of basses too as I prefered the look but liked the weight / tone. Ultimately playability, reputation etc has to be important but it's the look that makes us pick an instrument up in the first place
I agree. I wouldn't buy a bass that look bad to me just because it sounded good (I tend to buy basses that appeal to me and make them sound better ). The look/style of your instrument is part of the bands image too not just an expression of who you are. There is a degree of being a team player in there somewhere. I hate seeing bands with a general mix of guitars and styles then there's the lead guitar with his flash all singing and dancing axe and 3 different stacks to switch into - you just think what a w@nker.
... but when you had £2-300 onto the cost of a bass, it stops being a good deal.
It instead becomes a bass with a bit of "you" in it.
Best thing to do if you don't like people flipping stuff on BC for profit is to leave the price in your sold thread, and just mark the title as sold. That way it is easy to gauge the going rate on BC for particular items.
This ^ with bells on. It should be made forum law. Not just to avoid "flippers" and the like but so we all have something tangible on site to reasearch when buying or selling. Also "sold - mods please remove" offenders should be waterboarded until they can tell us why.
