1.
I emailed Genz Benz with a question about the unit and got a reply almost straight away from Jeff Gensler himself - so customer service seems excellent so far!
A definite +1 from me on that too, been emailing Jeff quite a bit recently and he seems a gentleman!
2. Great bassline, just make sure you emphasise the I and VII before it if necessary to give it that funk!
3. It's just a standard walking bassline in a I-IV-V format, in E I believe, so the chords would be E (four bars) A (two bars) E (two bars) B (one bar) A (one bar) E (one bar) B (one bar) As for the walking part, it's just basically major arpeggios in the traditional blues format, which in tab form would be something like this - E G|-----------6-| D|-----6--9----| A|--7----------| E|-------------| ...and similar structures for the other chords in the sequence. To string the arpeggios together, just throw in a few passing tones in between, walking chromatically up and down from chord to chord. And there you have a simple introduction to blues bass playing in general! Apologies if I haven't been very clear, it's late at night! Hopefully this will go some way to helping you, and the rest of the theory heads will be along soon Danny
4.
Bernadette: The Four Tops
+1. It was a great introduction to the Jamerson style for me and remains a favourite to this day!
5. Nice sentiment mate! It's always good to see the bass being used in less traditional genres - really expands the perceptions of what the instrument can do. The farthest I've went from the mainstream with a bass guitar was to include it in some traditional Irish music, the sort that typically includes fiddle, acoustic guitar, banjo, concertina etc etc. Definitely forces you to approach music in a totally different way than you would have previously. Sometimes you can fall into the all-too familiar patterns and I think this can lead to stagnation if you aren't careful. Change is always healthy! Danny
6.
Reply to M. Jackson, LA BB
You might be waiting a while for a reply if you do that!
7. Most of the time, sunburst basses are made with a slightly better quality of wood than ones with solid finishes though. Due to the see-through nature of the finish, they can't afford to have a piece of shoddy wood underneath. Buy one and get it refinished maybe? The neck and pickups are worth the price alone really, much better than any MIA Fender I've tried. Also, it's the same colour scheme as the '73 bass Barry Devlin used in Horslips, incidentally, it also has a parrot attached to it!
8. Heads up guys! Channel 284 on Virgin Media, not sure about Sky, but quality viewing guaranteed! Danny

Bass tone

I usually play with my basses' volume and tone controls on full, then do the rest of the shaping using the EQ controls on the amp. Can't remember the last time I've boosted treble on the amp though, come to think of it!
10. That site is a pain to use! I'd recommend the Guitar Emporium, I've been in touch with them in the past regarding MIJ basses and they've been very helpful. Danny
11. Thinking about putting them on one of my Jazz basses. Are they really THAT good? I normally use Elixirs for that particular bass but am considering a change!
12. Checked them out in the past but never bit the bullet. I seem to remember them being rated quite highly, up along with the likes of the Aguilar 12" cabs. User BassBunny has a couple of their cabinets I believe, might be worth shooting him a PM? Danny
13. They're generally regarded as a first amp or a spare for a rehearsal studio/backup. What is your current setup? What sort of music do you play? Danny
14.
Surely it will create the same open string sound a brass nut does?
Yes, it's something along those lines. It basically makes an open string sound similar to a fretted note due to the metal-to-metal contact. I've yet to hear a bad review!
15.

BEAUT
16. Do you use the rackmount version or the stompbox Tayste? Just been looking at these because of this thread and they look pretty good, I certainly have a few gigs coming up that a reliable wireless system could come in handy for.
17. Nice one, not particularly a fan myself but it seems a shame to miss a name bass player when he's just 10 mins down the road from me! Cheers for the heads up
18. A-frame stands aren't always suitable for basses with certain finishes, Nitrocellulose for example, as the two don't really get on well when they come into contact (that's the scientific explanation I can assure you) FWIW I have one of the Hercules tripods that grab the guitar by the neck/headstock, and it's given me many years of trusted use so far. Folds away quite small too so it's very portable.
19.
Can someone tell me what 'darker' sounding means on the 84's? I had a look into them and I'm after a dirty grinding bass tone, but does darker mean that?
It will certainly be closer to what you're after than the 64's IMO
20.
Wicked....id love to see some pics of the vintageised cabs!
+1! My appetite has been sufficiently whet!
21. I don't have a bass with me right now, but I used to play this in a band and it seems that the first way you mentioned is the correct way (from memory). It makes much more rhythmic sense to pop and slap in that order than to double slap, especially in the context of that particular song as it's just so DAMN funky! Of course, if it sounds good to do it another way, then do it by all means!
22. Perhaps even a little 2 channel mixer, something like THIS, though I'm sure there are cheaper options out there than that even!
23. I absolutely love the Wizards in my Jazz Bass. With both on, you get the full whack of traditional Jazz bass rumble, and with the neck pickup solo'ed the sound is pure P heaven! +1 from me
24.
Just use sheratons,itll be fine.
Or just use a Fender
25. Great stuff mate I've moved this topic to the 'Recording' forum, Off Topic doesn't do it justice!
