If considering a Hohner B2a as a Steinberger placebo bear in mind that the neck profile is quite different. Ive owned both and the Steinberger has a narrow deep profile whilst the B2a is wider and shallower. I actually preferred the range of tones that came out the Hohner, being able to play in either paasive or active mode. I guess a sold my L2 because when it comes down to it, I prefer the sound of wood. Like the Private Eye style joke above btw ;-)
I had a US one in the early 80's. I remember buying it used for £150 in Shaftesbury Ave. Don't know if it was a good deal then or not, probably not. Wish I still had all my early basses.
I was just getting my very first bass in the early 80's and thats the exact amount I had to spend. I remember US Fenders being even cheaper as no one wanted them because active electronics was the fashion. My older brother had several old jazz basses which he ditched for something modern at the time. Doh!

The shortage of in stock lefty instruments in music shops is an everlasting one. Even when I used to visit London most stores never had the exciting stuff in the lefty option. Its always been like that up here in Scotland therefore I bought my Warwick thumb blind. Ive spent many bass-playing years simply playing right-hand basses upside down. The internet has made a huge difference to finding stuff of course but it still means 'buy before you try'.

Im a lefty and used to flip bass round on the pivot. Last year I came across a guy selling a lefty XL2 in europe but I could have bought a pre-CBS Fender for the asking price. Im using a lefty Warwick thumb and in many ways is similar with small body and narrow neck but the long scale. I just wish Warwick would make medium scale instruments too. Lucky Bill Wyman, ex Rolling Stones bassist, had a one-off short-scale L2 made for him. Would love to get my paws on that.

I owned an early L2 fretless. I like small-bodied basses and the Steinberger was the smallest thing out there. I found the neck access the best of any bass ive owned. Yes, it does feel a longer stretch given that it is 24 fret but with such a narrow neck it never really bothered me. Also, the strap pivot meant you could alter the height of the neck without actual strap length adjustment. I got out of the habit of playingfetless, otherwise i would prob still have it. The whole balance issue also disappears when wearing the strap as the pivot is at the centre of your body's gravity. Damn, the more i remember the more i want one again! Haha.

What's the point of a thumbrest BELOW the strings?

Sting is a fantastic current example of what can be done playing with yer thumb on an old Fender P. -
I find many black basses rather boring, but they can also be very chic. I love the look of my MIJ '75 Jazz reissue, but I wouldn't have liked the look of it with a rosewood fingerboard and without the pickup cover.
This bass should be in the Gear Porn thread. My brow is sweating. GIMME!

I used to own a 70's Fender that was black. I thought the finish was too much like plastic so I stripped it back to natural. However, I now lean towards finding a suitable black bass again. I agree about the white pickguard on black combination being a turn-off. I do like a bit of chrome though.
Can't seem to find the new "lefty basses for sale" thread anywhere?, only looked on the mobile site not the full version tho'
Its there, after you click on the Basses For Sale link. Nothing posted yet.
If you could get a scaled down Precision bass that would be a monster rig for a dwarf .
Damn it. Discovered at last!

'62 reissue Jazz Basses. What are the differences?
sblueplanet replied to ivansc's topic in Bass Guitars
I have 2 lefty MIJ 62 RI Jazz basses. The white one is in pretty relic'd condition and has DiMarzio pups. The sunburst has Seymour Duncan pups fitted. Both are early 1990's but I would say the white one is brighter and the neck feels better. It is also very light in weight. Many people say the Jap reissues are better than some MIA models as you dont get that awful lazy routing hole round the front pickup and can take the pickguard off, ala Jaco. -
Its back to basics for me with a fender CIJ 57 RI P Bass and an Ampeg VR micro rig.

Im currently enjoying my P bass.

The sound IS ultimately in the hands. Im pretty sure any famous player with an obvious sound could play any decent random instrument through a decent amp in a music store and you would recognise their sound. Partly this is because their style would shine through but also because they would quickly tweak everything to suit what their ears wanted to hear. My advice would be to either search out that dream bass or if having one built, make sure it looks exactly how you imagined it using good quality materials then let your ears and your fingers do the rest.

Sterling by Musicman have finally made a lefty Ray34 in natural with all maple neck. Now if only they would include a lefty SB14.

Can you pay subscription by PayPal? Does this only happen when you plan to sell something?

I would say the late Mick Karn who played with Japan. A great and unusual fretless player. Also, Robert Bell of The Blue Nile, a lefty like me. Derek Forbes, ex Simple Minds recorded some great baselines. Finally, because he's not technically a bassist, but how about Ray Manzarek of The Doors who played all those fantastic keyboard basslines.

Amazing to follow. How many hours approx was the build?

Beautiful looking bass. I have a Warwick Thumb BO 4 lefty and was contemplating a 5 string NT fretless. Have you ever built a lefty? Is it the exact same process?

Recommendations For a pickup for good quality acoustic bass guitar
sblueplanet replied to alembic1989's topic in Bass Guitars
Why not ask over on the double bass thread? Bound to be plenty experienced users of different acoustic-type pickups there. -
Im one of those lefties who play with the bass strung for a right hander, ie. upside down. Its useful in that I can pick up right hand basses instore, flip them over and have a try. The downside is when I get any lefty instrument I have to reverse the nut and sometimes the bridge saddles. At the moment I only have one right hand bass, an Aria fretless. The rest are all lefties. Easier for balance, neck access and not interfering with the controls mid tune. A symmetrical bodied bass works best for just flipping like a Hofner Violin or Gibson EB/SG bass.

Alan Lancaster's,( Quo Legend), Mustang Bass
sblueplanet replied to Donnyboy's topic in Bass Guitars
The new Fender Mustang closet series has a humbucker pickup. If they made a lefty model I'd probably buy one. -
yea a lefty aerodyne Jazz bass , why?? Cos they look fantastic
Actually, I saw one on ebay a while back. It was coming from Japan though so try a search for international sellers.
