1. Here is the finished result and it looks pretty good.
2. Ok, here are some pics of the '57 Fender Precision CIJ I bought from LeftyJ recently. The first image is the bass as received and the others are after fitting a gold anodised pickguard with thumbrest. Now looking for a chrome bridge cover to add to the look.
3. Im interested. What weight is the amp in the case? Im looking for a nice amp to hook up to a 12" cab but has to be portable. What would postage be to the Glasgow area? Any chance of re-taking pics at higher resolution? Cant make out any detail. Cheers.
4. That Ricky deal was amazing. For anyone interested, I'll be posting pics this weekend of my work on the 57 reissue Fender Precision CIJ I picked up from LeftyJ recently.
5. Plenty jazz bass pickguards available on fleabay.
6. If the control plate is not bevelled and is flat edged it might be possible to reverse it and have the screw holes on other side counter-sunk. Im also a lefty and was talking to a guitar tech who said he could make one in plastic, any colour for around 20 quid. Making it in metal would be a much bigger job given the tools required.
7.
i just looked at my one and the finnish on the back is a bit ropey and i agree with your matey who said just countersink the other side. if you were down this way id let you try it out but Scotlands a bit of a trek from me. sorry if this isnt very useful Tom
Haha! Thanks Tom. All input is useful. Im going to look at a new one in a guitar store in Glasgow and Im taking the bass along to see what it could look like. The store has an in-house luthier and repair workshop so may get something done then and there. Im also considering making a metal control plate as bass currently has no pickguard but just a plastic control plate which is cracked.
8.
Looks like someone is receiving his new '57 P RI today
I certainly did! Cheers LeftyJ. Its as nice as I had hoped. Its going to Glasgow with me tomorrow to see if it can have a fender gold anodised pickguard converted and fitted. Ive spoken to Wolf of 'wolfsmusicweekly' who has a fine collection of lefty fender basses and he has done this on several basses so it might be a 'goer'. Failing this I hope to make a copy of the current plastic control plate in metal. I will post my progress and may try for both options as both seem feasible at the moment. Just a matter of cost.
9. UPDATE: Ive spoken to a collector of left-handed Fenders online. He has several instruments featuring gold pickguards. His method is to flip the righty pickguard over and counter-sink the screw holes on the other side. He says the finish on reverse side is not as good but is close, even more relic'd looking. It may be the way to go if I want this look for my bass.
10. On both my jazz basses, acquired 2nd hand, the stock p/u's had been replaced. One had Seymour Duncans fitted and the other Di Marzio. I'm guessing the originals just weren't up to the job. Both are excellent replacements.
11. From the image I found the pickguard itself looked flat edged. Ive contacted a seller to ask the same questions so Im hoping to get a response. I'll quote the reply if I get one.
12. Hi, Ive just acquired a 57 re-issue Fender Precision cij. Thing is, it's a lefty and has no pickguard. Does anyone know if the righty gold anodized pickguard available from Fender is the same finish on both sides and could be flipped over as I'm darned if I can find a lefty one. I believe from photos that it is not bevelled but I'm guessing the screw holes will be but that can be overcome, right?
13. Oh man, i remember this bass really well. I was after my first ever bass in 1982 but didnt have enough for a Squier. I remember the jazz bass being £250 and the precision at £230. Me and my older brother played them and loved them but with me also being a lefty i was pretty much scuppered. In fact that same year you could pick up a 70's USA precision for £120 and a 60's jazz for under £300 in Glasgow. My brother must have had 3 or 4 during the 80's before settling with a musicman sabre. Ive just acquired a 57 re-issue lefty Fender precision cij which looks identical to the one here minus the pickguard.
14. Agreed. That Bacchus is a lovely looking bass. Loving the perspex pickguard and maple board with block inlays too. What was the quoted price?
15. Second lefty stingray went for £506 on ebay. Another bargain. Another ends tomorrow but has a lot of bids so prob go for a lot more.
16.
Bugger.. I didnt even see it.. I seem to miss loads of lefty basses on ebay, whats the best thing to type in the search? I usually go for "lefty basses".
A search for '' left handed bass " under the musical instruments category gives the best results but i always do the variations such as 'lefty', 'left hand', 'lh' etc.
17.
Understandable, but otherwise I'd like to think someone got a bargain !
There two other lefty stingrays on ebay at moment. Both with full maple necks. That euro lottery win cant come soon enough!
18.
Anyone here get the black stingray on EBay for £410 ? I salute you....possibly !!!
I was watching it. I contacted the guy about the replacement pickup ( it had a seymour duncan basslines pickup) and got no reply so that put me off bidding.
19.
Hi! new bass player here. I see some of you have a Japan 57 pbas. I'm thinkin about getting one, but I would like to know what you guys think about the basswood + maple combination. Too bright sound? Thank you!
When I get this one set up I'll let you know what I think. Prob be putting flatwounds on it for that Motown vibe ;-)
20.
Yes, I still have it, but sblueplanet has first dibs.
Pm'd.
21.
I'm looking for 300 euros, that's approximately what I paid for it in this condition. That's about 220-225 Pounds at this moment. Shipping to the UK would be another 34 euros. If I don't sell it this saturday, I will get back to you
Please do.
22.
Yes! I have a reservation on it currently and it's coming with me to the Lefty Bass Day in Duisburg, Germany this saturday so the guy who showed interest can see it in person and try it out. If that doesn't work out I can let you know. It's a CIJ '57 RI in 2-tone sunburst with a full maple neck. Unfortunately I got it without a pickguard. I never bothered searching for a replacement pickguard because I had originally bought this bass for a building project with two Fender Wide Range humbuckers and intended to use the neck, but I never got round to it and now I can use the money. The guy I bought it from said the pickup is a Kent Armstrong (don't know what model), other than that nothing has been changed. The bass is in good condition, apart from a strange dent near the forearm carve on the front side of the body. I'd say it's about an inch long, narrow, and looks like something bumped into it. I tried to capture it in the last picture. http://s45.photobuck...57%20Precision/
An asking price would be handy :-)
23. That Precision is very interesting.
24. Anyone here selling a MIJ Precision in sunburst?
25.
Relief of neck and how tight the truss rod is.... how tight the neck joint is. and you've shot yourself in the foot when you come to sell one of them! "oh is this the good one or the crap one?"
Haha! It's not that bad. Ive had the chance to play a bunch of US vintage Fender Jazz basses over the years and I noticed the same discrepancy in tone and weight between instruments. Some sounded amazing, others were just ok. I'd say it is just my ears to some extent and as Ive said when plugged in both are fine. Looking for a few tips to improve the acoustic response if thats possible?
