1. Still waiting for Sterling by Musicman to produce a lefty version of the SB14. Anyone know if they plan to do so? I emailed them a while back but got no response.
2. I bought a Fender P CIJ last year already fitted with a Kent Armstrong pup and it sounds fantastic. Best P bass I've ever played. Unfortunately I don't know which type is fitted but maybe there is a way to find out? Anyway the range of tones is excellent, from bright highs to muddy lows.
3. Cheers guys. I don't have the bass in my possession yet to look it over again and take any measurements but I'll be very cautious if I do attempt anything, especially since it's not mine. I suggested putting bass into a luthier so maybe he will find out a cost for that. He's a keyboard player who likes to dabble on bass so I think he assimes it isn't complicated to sort action issues etc. Maybe a luthier will know if regular steel flats can be put on. The guy doesn't like the bronze roundwounds.
4. My friend has asked if I can improve the action on his Alliance VP 800B electro-acoustic bass. It has a fixed bridge like most acoustic guitars and the truss rod is accessed just behind the sound-hole. At present it is pretty high and I'm wondering if I can try to take out the string saddle and sand it down with a possible quarter-turn tweak on the truss-rod. Has anyone tried this on an acoustic bass with success? Also, the bass is currently fitted with bronze roundwound strings. Would it be possible to put on normal bass steel flatwounds?
5. I currently have one but have only been using it for practice and home recording so never played it loud but I remember when I had a Gibson EBO, any small combo I tried couldnt handle the bass end from the neck positioned humbucker. It is only a 10" speaker with a low wattage rating after all so shouldnt expect a great deal of air pushing.
6. I currently have a lined fretless but my previous fretless basses have a been unlined which I prefer. My current wishlist is an unlined 5 string Warwick Thumb fretless.
7. Doesn't look worth refurbishing to me. Just spruce it up and make the best of what it has.
8. The Gibson Thunderbird was located in the U.S. Auction had a 'buy it now' and ended early.
9. I once toured as part of a support act to a major band and I was horrified to watch the bass tech snap the strings off the bassist's four basses after every performance whether all the basses had been played or not and put on new ones for next gig. Pretty soon I had befriended the bassist and his tech and was getting 4 sets of 'as new' cast-offs a show and no more strings were being chucked into a plastic bin every night. I guess some people want their strings sounding BRIGHT
10. Ive often wondered if there is a system for choosing strings that will stay 'as new' for the longest playing period. Is there a choice of string wind, or metal that truly makes the difference irrespective of brand?
11. Both my MIJ jazzes have had their original pickups upgraded by their previous owners so I have no idea how one sounds 'out the box' but the quality of the build is fine so I would imagine as much effort went into the electronics and component parts?
12. My Thumb BO4
13. Im on my first P bass which is a lefty 57 RI and I fitted a gold pickguard and chrome covers because I love that vintage look. Playing-wise the covers are not an issue as I approach this bass differently to say a Jazz with its funky back pickup which screams for fingerstyle. I try and play to the bass. My old Gibson EBO only had a front humbucker at the neck and this developed a style of playing unique to that bass. I like the way the covers on a P take my playing and choice of bassline in a slightly different direction to not being there and the great thing is, you can take them off anytime.
14. I tried a righty Status but body was too big for me. I owned a Steinberger fretless L2 righty for a long time. My only headless bass. Flipped it over and played it upside down. I quite like small-bodied basses but I have ended up with a few Fenders but Im always changing gear these days as I dont play as much. Would love to be able get a Wal mkII and sell everything else.
15.
New ACG arrived this week, she is rather nice!
That is one crazy bass. Dont know where to start. Er...how you play it, hehe.
16.
Nice thumb bass bit like my old one is it the wenge neck
Bubinga body, wenge neck and ovangol fingerboard I think. Cracking Status collection. Never played a lefty.
17.
very nice... Identical to mine
In that case you must send me a photo :-)
18. While Im actually on a device that allows me to upload images I thought I would show off my '57 Fender P bass RI CIJ to anyone who missed it since the upgraded gold pickguard and chrome covers.
19. How about some bass porn....I mean photos of course.
20. Gave the Thumb a wax and rub today. Looking good.
21. My first fretless was a black Westone Thunder 1A. Great bass. Wish I still had it. This one looks fab. Never seen that pickup configuration on a Westone before. Did you mod it?
22. I'd love that bass if it were a lefty. *produces magic wand*
23. That is some line up. I have a '90's lefty Thumb BO 4 but really want a fretless NT 5 but just cant afford one. I like the small body but the sloping pickups are a pain. Quite a heavy sucker but most of the weight disappears when wearing the bass. I prefer to play it in passive mode too.
