[/font][/color] [color=#1D2129][font=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]Later on a band came up to do a set and had an acoustic bass guitar which I plugged into my bass rig and eq'd it so that it wasn't too loud or too bassy and turned the tweeter to it's minimum setting as I know these things seem to kick out a heft of a signal. My parting words were don't turn anything and don't blow up my cab![/font][/color] [color=#1D2129][font=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]Anyway as their songs went on I had to keep walking back to the stage to turn down the volume then bottom end and upper mids as it sounded raspy ( he was using a pick). On the one occasion I saw him turning up the volume between songs I went over reset it below where I originally had it and stood behind him for the remainder of the set. [/font][/color] [color=#1D2129][font=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]I'm not going to do that again. In future any acoustic bass players will have to go through the P.A. or bring their own amp.[/font][/color] [color=#1D2129][font=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]Any advice for me using that setup for myself in the future. Is it a good idea to use a regular bass rig for acoustic bass guitars or would I be better off with a dedicated acoustic bass guitar amp.[/font][/color] [color=#1D2129][font=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]As an aside at home I use my PJB Briefcase and that's ok at the volume levels I use and in theory on the right gig I could DI out from it into the P.A. but what about those in between gigs that the PJB is too small or those where there is no PA and the bass has to fill the room. Any experienced advice would be grateful.[/font][/color]

I decided to have a switch put in my strat so I can have the outer two pickups on together and that gives me a good enough telecaster sound for what I need. I got it done by Martin at the Little Guitar Shop in Hockley Birmingham.

Whilst the body looks the same as a series bass they are generally categorised by the electronics in the bass but that may not always be the case on a custom build. But the body is wider to hold the series innards and has a 5 pin plug for the external power supply which comes standard with series basses and has true single coil pickups and a third pickup which is for the noise cancelling system. Tonights gig was superb. Played a jazz/reggae fusion gig with my band. The sound guy told me it's the biggest crowd he can remember at the venue. Good to know.

Neither of them are series I or II instruments.

Alembic F1-x with an Alembic SF-2 in the send return loops. The F1-x full range out goes into a QSC PLX2402 stereo power amp with the inputs set to parallel. For cabs, I have three mesa boogie powerhouse cabs to choose from 2x10, 1x15 and 4x10. Usually it's the 4x10 and 2x10 used individually and when paired the 1x15 is added to either of the other two. I don't play loud and that setup gives me a good clean powerful and dynamic sound at low to moderate volumes.

Hymn of the seventh galaxy by Return to Forever. Even now it's hit and miss whether i execute it accurately enough all the way through. It's the kind of bass line that makes you work on a specific fingering method in order to play it well and in time. My next challenge is Slam the Clown by Alain Caron and I've watched his techniques on that track off youtube and am actively practicing them before I start learning that track.

The only bass I hang from the wall is my acoustic bass guitar. Never had problems it sometimes needs retuning but as yet has had no adverse affects. The two main guitar shops near me PMT and Guitar Guitar hang most of their guitars and basses on the wall from hangers from the cheap to the boutique and collectables and I guess if there were structural problems with the instruments from doing that they would be the first to change their practice to avoid after sales issues with customers.

That's the rig that I used to use with my basses that have individual pickup outputs so I can eq separately and send to individual cabs. Most of my gigs are reggae so I cannot see much to be gained from that set up in that genre. I tried it a few times on a jazz funk gig and one with acoustic guitars and the clarity was outstanding. [size=4]These days I stay mono, usually one cab and have put the second pre-amp in a separate rack case for when travelling light.[/size] [attachment=238753:IMG_0569.jpg]

Wow a surfretter, glad to see someone else has one too. Do you play it much? I haven't in recent years as I'm playing bass more often. I have used it on a few gigs in the past though but only for melodic stuff and the odd few chords. I also used it a few times when I was playing guitar in a reggae band as we had some indian melodies going on and that guitar was great for getting the expression in the lines.

These strings are still on my bass and I've been gigging every week with them since summertime in the house band on a 3 hour open mic session also had a number of reggae gigs with them up to last weekend and they are still sounding great. They have a permanent home now on my all maple bass which is a really punchy sounding bass. The good thing is that the strings seem to have been extremely consistent over the time they have been on the bass and the crispness and clarity on the top end is still there as is the warm punchy bottom end. I think they are at home on that bass and will stay there until they break or if the tone changes to something I don't care for. So far they are showing to be a great asset.

This means effectively I have my fingers brushing the strings rather than plucking in towards the bass. I find this gives me a warmer tone and for faster passages there is an even tone between notes. However some tracks I play require a more pronounced attack such as Sweet Tooth by Victor Bailey and What is hip? But to get the right tone for that I have to play with the tips of my fingers having my palm facing the bass which means my fingers are basically 90 degrees to the strings and because my index and middle fingers are different lengths I find that I have problems with getting an even note tone between alternating fingers.
