1. I agree, a dedicated forum app that is free to use would be great. Safari is great but compared to the ease of use of an app like the Talkbass one it's a total pain.
2. You don't wear jeans while playing bass?
3. I just finished putting together this track, my first song written on piano and probably the first thing I've ever recorded with no guitar (besides bass, in this case my P with a pick). Sounds a bit like a mish mash of the Beach Boys, Elliott Smith and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci... http://wilmiles.bandcamp.com/track/caroline
4. Omar Rodriguez Lopez
5. Whenever I write a song, the basslines I compose are almost always simple. I want the bass to underpin everything, to me it's a support instrument and in contemporary pop music that's how I like to use it. When I'm playing bass to songs others have written I might liven things up a bit more to keep myself interested, but in the last few years I've found my lines getting simpler and simpler and I'm gleaning my enjoyment more from the sound of the band as a whole.
6. Here's an interesting one, Les plays some very subtle bass on this Tom Waits track. Like most later Tom Waits, it's not for those who like easy listening (I love it personally!)... Great, great, fantastically great guitar solo from the inimitable Marc Ribot too.
7. 50/50 these days. Love the sound of palm muted pick lines.
8.

Why does he always look like he's in the middle of the vinegar strokes when he plays?
9. I think it's most likely that the myspace music player compresses the quality to reduce buffering, and I suppose that might be more noticable on some tracks than others depending on the mix? Not that it seems to work, mind.
10. Myspace is awful, particularly now since they've "redesigned" it. For hosting music, I'd recommend Bandcamp - it's lossless and you can sell your music directly from the site.
11. I was strictly fingerstyle for many years, but I'm using a pick over 50% of the time now and loving it. It's just got a certain direct simplicity and tone that I like. Palm muted pick style on a P is just sublime for vintage tones too.
12. Hooray! Glad you got it sorted
13. I just remember that when I had a BC Rich Mockingbird that had multiple pickup switching options for phase, series/parallel etc etc, I spent ages finding the tone closest to what I heard in my head and then left all those switches alone for good! My ideal scenario is for the bass to have a great core sound out of the box, with a few options to tweak low end, mids and treble for the room and maybe pan from neck to bridge for pick/fingerstyle. That's all you need.
14.
I allows complete control. Active/passive, series, parallel, different coil combinations, phasing (I think) and im sure some other options. I havent seen the maths, but thats literally thousands/millions of combinations depending on how many coils you have.
Pretty impressive, but I can't help but think that would drive me nuts! I'd rather just have two or three quite different options with a way of blending them and a good preamp I think.
15. I'm not sure I quite understand it. There's no quick reference or explaination as to what the system does anywhere that I can find, is it just a way of combining individual pickup coils and series/parallel settings?
16. Love the Omar guitar as ever. I dont see any of those curved body SRT basses? Maybe they didnt sell well?
17.
Son of a Preacher Man - Tommy Cogbill/Dusty Springfield
Did he also play on Dusty Springfield's "Take a Little Piece of my Heart"? That's an incredible line.
18. I don't really like Primus. I like one or two songs, laquer head for instance. I have a lot of respect for Les, though. He's incredibley inventive and distinctive, and his body of work is remarkably broad. He even played bass for Tom Waits a few years back on a few of his records.
19. I got bored half way through. I guess that means I'm the sort of musician who loses interest as soon as it becomes a chore?
20. My band Dirty Break play rock/pop punk. Lots of backing vox for me, which I love! Things are just starting for us (IE, now we have some recordings we're finally able to get some gigs!) so I think 2011 should be a fun year. You can check out our 8 track EP here: http://dirtybreak.bandcamp.com or find us on facebook here: Dirty Break
21. Every Jamerson line I've ever heard Beach Boys - I guess I just wasnt made for these times The Beatles - Paperback Writer Skunk Anansie - I can dream All I can think of at the moment.
22. If they announce a 5 string version that follows the SR4 template instead of the SR5 (which I just don't get on with visually) then there will be no restraining me. Fingers crossed.
23. A nice old P bass is like a classic car. A modern, cheaper one would probably outperform it, but that would be missing the point. Eight grand though? Absolutely mental.
24. My hi beams have a fairly gradual reduction in brightness, they tend to last me a few months before they require boiling or replacing. Just boiled them the other day in fact for the first time and it has brought them back to sounding almost like new, which is fantastic news considering how much they cost!
