Well, some people say its all in the fingers. I think having the right gear has a lot to do with it though, personally. Learning to tweak your EQ to get the sound you want comes down to experimentation I'm afraid, it tends to vary from bass to bass, amp to amp and room to room. Do you have any examples of bands where the tone does it for you? That would give us a good starting point to advise you from.

I got this SBMM SB14 the other day: http://img21.imageshack.us/i/img0343sp.jpg/ So far, I love it. Set it up BEAD, probably need to file the nut a bit but I'll sort that at the weekend.

He used to play a Warwick Streamer Stage 1, with Trace Elliott V Type amps I think. Lots of compression too.
But that only works some of the time. There are a lot of situations where you won't get the chance to hear it first, even quickly.
I know it's essential for a lot of gigs, I was just responding to the question "how do you play without knowing the note names". That's what I do, but I've always played in originals bands where none of the other members know the note names in the first place.
I don't see how you can play without knowing what the notes on the fretboard are. If you go to play with someone, and they give you a chord progression of C/Eb/F/G for example, what do you do ?
You ask them to play it for you real quick, then you jump in.

It's taken me 16 years but I think I've just about got B, E, A, D and G committed to memory. Just about.

A new addition arrived today, a Sterling by Musicman SB14: http://img21.imageshack.us/i/img0343sp.jpg/ I haven't plugged it in yet, my guitar leads and amp are round a mate's house Out of the box it was set up with zero relief and a low action. With my cack handed playing it was all buzz, so I tweaked the very handy truss rod wheel (I'm converted already!), lemon oiled the fingerboard (it was a bit emaciated), strung it BEAD and set the intonation again. Now it plays very well, the neck is very fast and comfy (I'd worried it might be too thin as I normally prefer P necks, but it seems fine) and the fretwork seems good. Good fit and finish all round and nice full tone acoustically, so I'm very much looking forward to trying it at band practice.

It's all in the mids. The way the Jazz is wired, with both pups on there is a slight mid scoop. The P with it's single pup has more mid presence, so without the bassist touching the EQ on his amp then the P probably would have more presence, yes. EQ'd correctly though a J will compete just fine.

Sounds like my idea of hell. I think it has it's place done very tastefully, in funk or hip hop for instance, but the whole Level 42/Marcus Miller thing really doesnt do it for me.

Picture here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=spector I've just pulled the trigger on a new bass, so this has to go (from next week, anyway). It's a solid workhorse, all maple (I think) neck through instrument, made in Korea. It has a pair of passive EMG HZ soapbars and an EMG BTS preamp. It has a few marks and a bit of buckle rash but nothing major. It's a great rock bass, with a very strong and focused low end and lots of sustain. I bought this off WHUFC Bass last year for £250 delivered. The input jack was faulty so I replaced it with a neutrick barrel jack, besides that I've had no issues. Now willing to post - £230 + postage.
I don't usually slacken the strings either but give the neck a helpful nudge (bend) either direction on each adjustment.
This. I dont think slackening the strings is a good idea personally, as you're trying to get the neck to settle where you want it while it's under string tension.
I quite like that, reminds me of early Deep Purple in places. Quite a blanced mix although for some reason the crash cymbal sounds over compressed. Good mix apart from that. Our effort from our first album...
That's wicked - it's got that real classic British punk sound. I see what you meant about the guitar solo in another thread, I think it'd probably be much improved with a proper valve amp mic'd up - tonewise it's a bit fizzy. Besides that, it's great. Bass cuts through nicely but it's not overly harsh, nice sparkly top end.
Nice idea. I have a short clip at hand of a full song, I'll replace it when I track the full version down!! Hops it's OK, I'm sure some people here have heard it before, even.. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/85432/USB%203/Stic...20Situation.mp3 Basically a clip from an album that's still being mixed down and finished... that's my brother on drums and pissing about in the vocal booth... just a bit of a laugh really!
That's a really clear mix! The bass comes through very nicely - is that your Vigier? Sounds clear as a bell. I particularly like the parts where it drops out and back in, it's nice to hear a bit of space in a recording. All in all, very funky, nice job Here's a track I'm working on at the moment. No bass on it currently - to be honest I dont think it would sound right without a fretless or an upright, neither of which I have currently. It's the first outing for my recently aquired violin (£20 off ebay - bargain!). http://wilmiles.bandcamp.com/track/unfinished-track

The bottom of the lower horn could use a bit of slimming down to keep the lines sweet I think.

So, this thread is intended as a consolidated place for basschatters to get their recordings reviewed. It may well not work, but worth a go! The rule is, in order to post your own recording up for review, you must first listen to the piece posted before yours and offer an honest, constructive review. No need for war and peace, just take the time to listen to your fellow basschatter's offerings and offer a few thoughts. To get things started, someone post a recording (if no one does I'll be forced to post one of my own, and you dont want that)!
Nice idea! Would it work for long? Would it be empty due to the first poster being unable to do so?
It would be worth a shot I suppose. I'll get the ball rolling in a minute. Edit - here we go: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=126554&hl=

How about a thread for people to post recordings in where the rule is you must offer a review of the piece of music posted before yours?

One of the few pieces I got to a decent standard on the cello, but have never learned on the bass. I'd imagine some of the fingerings are a bit of a stretch! My favourite suite I think is 5, it's so dark. Might need a five string for that one though.

Now That Myspace Is Dead - Where To Put The Music?

Bandcamp is good for hosting/selling music losslessly. Soundcloud is another good one, although I've not used it myself.
