How does a graphite neck stop a tuner being knocked?
I think he meant when it was in it's hard case. I have to say, when my Status was in its hard case there was no way the tuners could get knocked, and it never did go out of tune, the neck was so rigid it didn't seem to shift with temperature changes at all.

I've no idea if it was "technically" any good, but I enjoyed it regardless Nice work!

You've moved from a 2x10 to a 4x10, I'm not suprised it's fatter Cab size/shape matters, but I don't see how weight can have any impact unless the weight saving has been at the expense of the build quality. Saying that, I wouldn't mind a V6, and I'd agree that you can't beat a full valve amp if that's the tone you're after.
I've just been considering this point. On my bass, the action is 'medium', and looking down the neck, it looks like the rod could do with a tweak. There is that niggling feeling that I should sort it out, as the neck could be straighter and the action could be lower. The thing is, I love the tone and love the playability, so have to keep telling myself 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. If I fiddled with it, I'd be afraid if it didn't work out, I'd never be able to get it back to that bass I know and love.
Just count the turns when you adjust and you should be ok. It's good to experiment with different setups, otherwise you might be playing with something less than ideal and not realise. It was only after trying different amounts of relief and low to high string heights that I settled on a medium high action as the best for me.
Interesting those who have replied so far believe there is a difference and that the string length is longer with high action. I would question if this is the reason, unless you are confusing action with regard to bridge height or action by changing the relief in the neck by adjusting the truss rod. With a forward bow you are shortening the string length, when I adjust my set up I usually check if the relief is right first and have found that adjusting the neck back so increasing string length actually improves tension and sound and makes octave tuning easier and correct. (Open - 12th fret). Those of you above do you prefer high action due to a lot of relief forward bow. And or bridge height Summing up what I have said above I find minimal relief is best, then adjust action bridge saddle height to suit playing style, then pickups to maintain maximum volume This one should run Homer
I've experimented with using more neck relief, similar results to raising the action but I find it causes more strain on the left hand and buzzing/clacking above the 12th fret. I prefer to use just a touch more than a credit card of relief and raise the bridge saddles until I reach the preferred string height, then set intonation/pickup heights. I find the stiffness/tension/whatever difference most pronounced on the left hand due to the increased distance you have to press the string down in order to fret, the right hand feel could be entirely in my head, but the left hand difference is definately there.

I love the sound of a fretless P bass when used with minimal vibrato, dead strings/flats and a high action. Woody thump, great for trad rock, blues, funk, all sorts really. I still prefer fretted basses for loud rock music though, the attack sits better I think.

I always tune before playing - it's impossible to prevent the tuners from moving in a soft gig bag, and even with a hardcase the temperature changes when moving from home, to the car, and then to the practice room/gig could have an impact on tuning.

Apparently tension remains the same when raising the action (otherwise I suppose the strings would no longer be in tune) but there's a definate change in... stiffness? Fnar. Whatever the technical term I love the feel on the left hand, the extra pressure required to keep notes fretted makes percussive ghost notes and the like a lot easier. It also helps stop my sloppy playing from creating all manner of clattery noise...

I can't stand a bass with the action set too low for this reason - notes ring clearer, and seem to have more thump when the action is set higher.

As I was dicking about with the line out on my F1 anyway, I've done some soundclips using the settings I mentioned above and with a bit of compression added via my DBX266XL in the FX loop on the amp. The first bit is my mongrel precision with the P pup only, followed by the P combined with the bridge humbucker in series, followed by my Sterling (preamp set flat, new Elixers though so it's sounding fairly bright at the moment). Just to save you guessing what tonewood the P is made of, I'm pretty sure it's MDF.

I got an F1 recently - I've not used my P with it through a cab yet, but I've been messing about with it at home with the line out into my PC - first impressions are that my P sounds fantastic through it. Slight bass/low mid bump, slight high mid cut, VLE at 9 o'clock gets me a nice detailed tone that's warm and punchy without being too clanky. Looking forward to trying it out through my 410L, as I never really managed to make my P work with my last rig (RBI + poweramp - too much of an inherant mid scoop I think). Linus, if you like the tone you get by scooping your low mids out, I think you'd probably love the Sansamp tone.

My Sterling is basswood. Unplugged it sounds fairly neutral, fairly resonant. Plugged in, well, you've got the pickup, preamp and then the rest of the signal chain so it's hard to say. Sounds fine to me.

The only album I ever spent a lot of time learning songs from was Jamiroquai's first effort. Taught me a lot about groove, that.

Heh, well if you get a windfall I'm just down the M4

Shameless plug, and perhaps just over your budget, but I'm selling my Crown XS700: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=132566 750watt @ 4ohm, IE, it'll blow your balls off.

Same here! Me and my brothers are intent on recording a version of this tune now, it's catchy as hell.

This is all very helpful, thanks!
