    I’d stick him in the annoying category now, but when I was starting out I was hugely inspired by Gene Simmons of Kiss.

    I started using lightweight stuff about 10 years ago and swapped my full fat ABM and GK heads for a Markbass LM2 and LM3. For me the Markbass heads had much more usable volume than the Ashdown or the GK head, thru old school heavy cabs (an Aguilar GS410 and a Schroeder 1210r). I used the Markbass/Aguilar combination live on outdoor gigs on big stages and it was terrifyingly loud. Ive sold the Aguilar and just replaced it with a BF Big Twin 2, which is super light and hellishly loud with the LM head. I love big valve heads and 8x10s where they’ve been provided as festival stage backline etc. But I wouldn’t dream of owning one as a jobbing bassist having to load and unload his own kit each time.

    An in addition to the lack of gig bags, I don't understand why Fender don't seem to make replacement Mustang scratchplates either. I love my MIJ Mustang bass, and would love a pearl white plate to go on it, but genuine Fender replacement scratchplates seem impossible to come by despite a pretty extensive range of 'correct' style Mustangs (MIJ/CIJ, JMJ, Vintera series, Classic Vibes and American Performer series).

    It's a great bass part. I became aware of it after playing a gig and the venue put it this on thru a big sound system and the bass was just delightful. Its possibly Will Lee on bass but I don't know for sure. It's a proper ear worm of a tune too!

    I went to a Francis Dunnery house gig a few years ago and it was ace. It was a friend of a friend wanting to get a few more bums on seats and host was happy for me and my mate George to come along. Really enjoyed seeing and hearing Francis playing. I'm not mad about some of his astrology/philosophy stuff but his playing and his storytelling were top notch. An unexpectedly cool little evening out.

    If I was Yamaha I'd have taken the opportunity to promote their cases as the most comfortable, safe ones out there, guaranteed to get you from A to B in one piece.

    Sold Lee a Yamaha five string bass. He was easy to deal with; good to chat to and a prompt payer. He was also genuinely chuffed when it arrived, so you can't say fairer than that! Nice one chap.

    The first bassist I was ever aware of - a chap who played with my brother's friends' band in Cardiff in the mid 1980s - had a Thunder Jet and i thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I had a couple of Westones over the years - two Thunder 1As, and a later Spectrum ST. Always pined for another for old time's sake.

    It's a good bass and sounds the absolute dogs. £250 was a bargain when I got it, so I'm happy to pass that good vibe on as it were....

    I’m selling my Yamaha TRB1005 that I bought just after Christmas from fellow Basschatter MikanHannille. It’s a fantastic bass but it's just too big for me (unfortunately I have a long-standing shoulder injury and don’t find it comfortable to play for any length of time). Which is a real bummer because I’ve been rehearsing with it this week for an upcoming Bowie tribute night and it sounds really good! Damn. It’s 35” scale, Made in Korea, with really clear definition on the low B string, and plenty of punch and tonal variation thanks to the three-band active EQ, volume and pickup blend pot. Weight is about 4.3kg on my luggage scales. Now, MikanHannille was at pains to point out that is wasn’t mint condition, and it does indeed have a few small surface dings on the edge of the body, end of the headstock etc, as you’d expect from a well-gigged instrument. None of it affects its playability, with the frets, nut, pickups, bridge, tuners etc all in really good condition. Medium/low action, Alder body with figured maple cap, and transparent black finish. I only paid £250 three weeks ago so I’m looking for the same. That’s a bargain for such a versatile, well-built bass. I'll be using it (sparingly) at the Bowie night this weekend (January 11) in Leicester but after that it's available to buy. I don’t have a case or gigbag for this, so collection or meet up within reasonable distance of Leicestershire would be ideal. Willing to courier if needed though, with the price reflecting the additional cost (usually about £20-£25 from experience). Not really after trades as I've already got my eye on a 34" five string. Fire away with any questions.

    Working thru a bunch of early Bowie stuff for a gig this weekend - the big hits as well as some more unusual, lesser heard tracks. Some good playing in there too.

    I've taken a selection of small allen keys with me to shops before now, so at least i can sneakily address any dreadfully low action i encounter and get a clearer idea of the bass's abilities.

    I managed 37 this year, about half of which were my own solo gigs and the others depping with six other bands across the Midlands mostly. That's combined with full-time work and parenting two primary school age kids (without any local relatives to help) tho, which is about as much as I can manage. Saying that I also like to make sure I keep time free to do family stuff together - the joy of depping means I can say no.

    I depped for a band playing at a museum last summer. The band's PAT testing certificates had expired cos the guy responsible had had all sorts of family upheaval in the previous weeks and understandably forgot. So the venue would only let us play on the condition we had fire extinguishers on the stage with us.

    I used to play an unlined SGC Nanyo SB301 fretless and it was great - the usual good build quality and value for money. I sold it a few years back when I was skint and haven't seen one again. The lack of lines didn't bother me - I navigated by a mixture of feel and the guide dots along the edge of the fingerboard.
