Whenever I’ve had a new nut I’ve chosen Graph Tech, not sure whether or not they do what you need but if they do they’d be my tip.

For myself 100% agree, I like to be present for the whole process. For some people I’ve been in recording bands with however I’ve wished that they had done exactly that and left as soon as their parts were done.

I’m similar but my Fender JMJ Mustang basses are pretty well done, if it wasn’t for the fact the wear on all three is pretty much identical it would def pass for genuine wear.

My prejudices are: Basses that aren`t Fender (tho Squier acceptable) I like many other basses but for some reason I feel disloyal if considering them. I`m also not keen on basses unless they`re black, white or sunburst.

That’s a very good point, especially if doing football-terrace type backing vocals altogether.

Yeah if you listen to some of the classics now they speed up/slow down something rotten. But they sound great.

Decent venue, The Black Bull, the owner (Shev?) has done a lot to it over the years that I`ve played there.

I bought a Nux wireless kit earlier this year, two bugs, one for amp one for instrument, works on the 5.4 so no interference from taxis or pizza deliveries (tho who would turn down pizza). I’ve used it at a few gigs now and it’s very good, especially as it has on/off switches which are easy to see & operate, no need to disconnect from the instrument when not in use.

My fave Precision, which I bought new and have had for about 8 years has some fret wear, I’ve only used steel rounds on it and in my old band I played hard. It’s still ok though, doesn’t affect playability, maybe it’s because I’ve had it so long but it’s the bass I find easiest to play and enjoy playing the most.

Just got in from a short set gig. Was a mates surprise 40th birthday do and although there was a band booked his missus asked if a few of his old mates would do a few songs. She asked this last week! So 4 of us said yes, bass, drums, 2 gtrs, shared vox amongst us. We had 2 rehearsals, only 1 with the drummer who hurt his ankle last week (not good). We put together a 40min set of classic rock songs and am pleased to say it went really well, to the point where many in the audience (most of whom are old mates) said we should keep it going and we all feel the same which is great. A few timing issues but fortunately all of us are experienced enough to know “ok, add another 2 bars” rather than fall apart. I really enjoyed it.

I reckon you’re on the right track with pickup heights, there’s nothing in your eq that would make me think lower volume on thinner strings. To counter this I for one raise pickup heights but also use gauges such as 50-105 rather than the regular 45-105 to get thicker strings over the - bizarrely imo - nearer the bridge pickup.

It’s funny but when I go into the studio I prefer to work to how the producer wants (aside from radically changing my sound or wanting different instruments to be used). Given we’ve chosen them based upon their results it seems best to work to their preferences.

I’m fine to record to a click, the track might vary a bit throughout but it reins it in a bit and keeps it largely under control.

Yep many great in the mix sounds are tinny clanky and more driven than would have been thought.

Exactly what happened on my last recording session, tho to be fair I was playing a 1969 P Bass with semi-knackered strings already. Doing that did make for a great sound that sits in exactly in the right place in the songs.

I think its a hit on the hi hat or snare that makes it sound like that, given I love the film it really bugs me, such an awful coockup

I get that Pete, I love Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush, fantastic song but the part I really like is the lead guitar on the ending, fantastic playing.

Re the instrument thing, I’ve been in loads of recording studios all over the place, all of them had guitars/basses/amps lying around, they’re pretty much tools of the job. But as with anything that isn’t mine, I’d only use it if granted permission by the owner. Confirm with the producer it’s ok to use then great go ahead but never just pick them up and play, that’s just bad manners.

I`m going back to about 2009 when a band I was in played a scooter rally. We had to provide full backline and PA, but the gig was indoors (the rally was at some clubhouse in Kettering) there was power etc. We were paid £400 I think, plus free camping - as the bands name was The Daves our 4 tents became Camp David.

I think I`ll get this done, good call methinks.
