I used to love that song when it was in the charts.

I use a Wenger rucksack, not cheap but it’s practical, offers good protection and many other compartments for the leads etc.

I think you`re spot on there Chris

Yeah, I wanted to try the flats as a lot of the stuff I`m playing was apparently recorded with them, but although they`ve got a nice enough presence we just all prefer the rounds. Could be that I`m just so much more used to rounds that I eq them better, or that we`re all just more used to them so the different sound didn`t fit so well, but in reality I think it`s as you say, not really the right strings for that type of music.

I played my new Precision last night at rehearsal, strung with Rotosound flats. Tried a few different eq options but both myself and the band all came to the conclusion that we preferred the bass with rounds, so s/s Elixirs it will be.

Angled Cab and Separate Head - my solution!
Lozz196 replied to redbandit599's topic in Amps and Cabs
Good solution there -
In all the hundreds of gigs I’ve done I’ve only ever needed a backup once. When I’d left it at home. Lots of use there, it was not.

But I’ll bet it sounds great, Michael

I saw a band use one, admittedly the whole band were going through FOH but before that in the sound check it easily kept up with unamplified drums at regular pub covers type volume.

I have to admit I was one of those people. I’d not really payed much attention to music in the early 90s, heard the MF version first then thought Oasis (who I had no idea who they were) had done a pretty good modern version of it. But I still think Mike Flowers version is the best. And I really like Oasis.

Vanished places where I wish I had gigged

Would have been my answer too, Joey -
Very good point Chris, I’m not an overly techie person but I think that bass amps nowadays are voiced maybe a bit too low. I really noticed a difference when I recently switched from 40hz to 80hz on my Sansamp, much clearer and the bass seemed more “there” but less flub/boom. Maybe the older amps/speakers were voiced better, or perhaps the speakers couldn’t handle the real lows like they can nowadays?

The other thing that I can think of, and it’s how I look at the bass in my classic rock band that has keys, is that I don’t want to cut through, I want to support the drums & the groove and let the lead guitar & keys handle the upper frequencies without me getting in the way. That thing where you don’t notice the bass unless it stops, when suddenly the depth to the music just vanished.

Must admit I don’t know why, gigging in an originals band is much easier, turn up with a bass & bag of leads/tuner, plug in, play 30/40mins, done. As oppose to turn up at 7 with a covers band, set up a whole PA & lights along with full backline, then play at least two 45min sets, then have to break down all of said earlier gear. Sure in my old originals band I found that too exhausting but that’s cos it was gigs pretty much every weekend, sometimes both Fri & Sat, all over the country and in Europe, but if keeping to a fairly local patch originals I find a lot easier. Full respect to the covers bands for the amount of work that’s needed.

Bassdirect do those, however showing out of stock at the moment

Guitars Just Won't Stick to the Recording
Lozz196 replied to Blaze Esq's topic in General Discussion
In the classic rock band that I play for we learn the songs as they were recorded - and def make sure we all learn the same version btw - as to our view the reason we chose them was because we like them, so why play differently to the recording. We choose a song, go away and learn it, then play it at rehearsal. None of us use charts or notes, just play from having put the hours in. We’re not a gigging band but if we were we wouldn’t change this approach. -
Finally got round to playing my CD and love it, this is def worth a listen fellow Basschatters

Those are my thoughts too Dave, I want the bass to be there but in a supporting role, with both lead guitar and keyboards in the band I want to stay away from their domain and focus on the groove with the drums.
-
Yep, an originals band that plays a couple of covers in the set. We do about 10 gigs a year which is perfect for me, after my last bands 50 plus a year.

That was my impression of the OTB as well, Stew. Mine was connected to a Marshall VBC412 so plenty of cab to give it some welly. Even with input gain at 9 o’clock it was extremely loud.
-
I’m sure it’ll end up with rounds but I just felt the need to play the classic rock on a Precision with flats.
-
Rather bizarrely I’ve put a set of Rotosound flats that I had hanging around on it, want to check out how they work with my classic rock band. Though I suspect that it will ultimately be getting a new set of S/S Elixirs (already purchased).

Another good transaction with Aidan, as always swift payment and good comms including letting me know once the item had been delivered.
