Currently I'm in a mid-life crisis originals band and we've not been paid for any gigs and we don't expect to. Covers bands I've been in previously (and doubtless will again one day) I'd expect to be paid, or proceeds to charity etc. I've got a friend who is a backing singer in a covers band. I was asking if they got well paid for gigs. The answer: I don't know, the sax/singer keeps all the money: it's his band and he is a professional

Although there are also active basses that can also only cut tone

There's a tube comp sim in there too? Could be my ideal pedal!

Years ago I was in a band that covered the Jam's Butterfly Collector. Bloody awful. A couple of twiddly bits here and there and a plodding chorus.

How many of you have more than one Bass...
clauster replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
Not in a gigging band at the moment, just me, singer and guitar writing new stuff until we find the right person to hit the skins. I've only ever owned one bass at a time. I've always been lucky that if I fancy something new I've always been offered the lend of something similar. Sometimes it's resulted in me selling and buying. After 30 years I've come to the conclusion that the veberable P bass is the one for me. Whenever I've tried something else, it's what the next purchase has always been. If I knew I'd never gig again, I'd invest in a Fender US RI, a Shuker P or get the wood from Warmoth, have it finished in nitro and source the right hardware. But I will be gigging again at some point so a Squier CV or VM P is on the wish list. However, that's just me, and I can see why a non-gigger would want a traditional 4 stringer, maybe the "other" traditional 4 stringer, a modern active 4 and/or 5 stringer, a fretless, perhaps an accoustic etc etc. -
If you do your homework (find some decent plans or use something like winISD to give you the right parameters for your chosen drivers) then you could end up with something better than the "real thing" for the same price

Some Precision advice please - MIM Fender or MIJ Squier?
clauster replied to austin's topic in Bass Guitars
As others have said, it's all in the QC. I've had three Feder Precisions. The first, an early 70s USA (dead cheap because this was the early 80-s) was fantastic. The next (late 70s USA) was okay - not bad but not great. The last was a mid 90s MIM, as well put together as either of the others, sounded fine and played better than the late 70s US. The only downside was that it was by far the heaviest. -
J-D bought my old Warwick Corvette Std last week. Top guy to deal with. A brief exchange of messages for clearer pictures, questions about the bass and sorting out the details of the deal. He turned up at the right time, brought the right amount of money and is a thoroughly sound bloke too.

If you're willing to go to a shop and try a few then you can find some nice basses from the Squier Affinity range. I've got an Affinity P on long term loan and it's well put together and plays great. Paint job isn't that good (some ripples here and there) though. As with any Fender/Squier, I'd want to try it in person before handing over any money because even the MIA basses have variable quality control IME.

Dilemma! Would like opinions... with poll :)
clauster replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
Even though I think Warwicks are undervalued at the mo, I've realised the thing I want is also undervalued right now: Ashdown ABM stuff. So, I've put my Corvette up for sale in the FS forum -
I've dithered for ages about selling this bass. It is a great bass and for 3 1/2 years was my main playing/rehearsal/gigging bass. In my current project my Precision gives me more of the sound needed and beyond the occasional quick play when I give it a wax and polish it's just lived in its gigbag for the last 10 months and I've felt that I should offer it up to a good home where it will get the playing it deserves. The final push came last night when guitard turned up to rehearsal with a 100 Marshall half stack and rendered my Ashdown EB inaudible, so I need to free up funds for a new amp. Anyway, enough preamble. As the title says, it's a proper German made Warwick Corvette Standard, Ash body with passive p/ups and eq. Made and purchased in 2006. Although Warwick have a reputation for making heavy basses this is pretty light in my book and tips the scale at approx 3.6Kg (8lb in old money). Some pics - Full length- Front of body - Back of body - There's the usual playing wear above the pickups and one small shallow scratch at the fifth fret on the side of the fingerboard. I tried to get a pic of the scratch, but it's too shallow to show up on my camera. It's fitted with a JAN III (not glued yet) and I still have the JAN II (intact, the side bits haven't snapped off this one)- It also comes with the Warwick Owners Folder - and Rockbag - and because I'm so retentive, tags (both bass and bag), strap locks, and a brand new unused tin of wax (there's and almost finished one in the Owners Folder) and brand new Warwick polishin cloth (again, there's a well used one in the folder) - As I said, for three and a half years this was my main bass and it got taken everywhere in the Rockbag, usually slung over one shoulder. Unfortunately this has resulted in a couple of stress tears in the outer fabric of the bag. It doesn't affect the integrity of the bag - If anybody wants anymore pics, just let me know and I'llask Mrs Clauster to take them with her (much better) camera. Now, the important bit - The price: I'd rather it was collected and for this I'd let it go at £330.00. I'm in Tunbridge Wells and happy to travel upto about 20 miles to do a deal. If you're happy to buy unseen and want me to courrier it then £350.00. If you want to arrange your own courrier, fine, let me know how you want it packed and we can have a haggle. I've put for a straight sale, but would consider a trade for An Ashdown ABM (either head or combo) but only if we can do the deal in person. Any questions?
