1. ^ and this is why I won't play charity gigs anymore, turn early and set up all your own kit, play a short set to get warmed up, decide to have a break and probably something to eat as you haven't stopped all day, the person that said they wanted to do a half hour set doesn't turn up or you just really need a rest and possibly there are a lot of people not there yet so you leave it a bit longer whilst playing some music instead, all for nothing but a pat on the back and your a bunch of unprofessional w***ers. I know I'm pulling apart a situation you were at and I wasn't but I've heard so many similar stories now that I just wont do them anymore
2. There is a stand in my local park that has jazz bands on it sometimes.
3. I'd walk out unless the guitars were just thrown on the floor after the 2pm sound check that was carried so as not to offend those people that get to the pub at 7 every week asking the band why they can't just start now.
4. I'm a weekend warrior!
5. Not all upright players play or listen to jazz
6.
I'm not a pro, don't know theory and have a limited skill set, but sometimes get paid quite well for playing covers whilst people dance and enjoy themselves , this seems to piss off some pros.
Unlike a plumber or a nurse etc a musician falls into the category of 'the arts' which has no legal requirement to be a grade 8 or anything, as long as your diary is full you are doing ok although the more strings to your bow the better obviously
7. I suppose anyone taking a payment for any service fits the criteria of offering a professional service? Our guitarist works in mental health 3 days a week and teaches music 2 days a week I'd regard him as a pro?
8. I'd enjoy listening to them one at a time thats all
9. I like green basses and jazz basses and colour matched head stocks so it was on to a winner from the start
10.
I'm just glad I bought the Fender Sherwood Green Jazz Bass.
I dont blame you as much as AC doesn't float my boat that Jazz is really nice , I dont suppose they do a 5 string version do they? Before someone says thats a dig at AC the Marcus Miller comes in both doesn't it?
11.
Maybe you are.. I want to see a band do something...not play the entire evening by numbers. I want to see them stretch, go thru a gear or two and bring something along to the party... not sound like eleventy eight hundred other bands all doing the same set the same way.
We have a small theatre in town that caters for great music, I went to see Dan Walsh there last year it was fantastic, harp player, fiddle, drums, banjo, guitars and bass really top quality musicianship, put them in the pub over the road and no one wants to know, they want sex on fire, livin on a prayer, sweet home etc just like they do every week!
12. A few hours on this might help, come back when you are a bass clef wizard http://www.studybass.com/tools/bass-clef-notes/
13. Maybe I am just too easily pleased to be able to walk into a pub, buy a pint and be entertained to some extent for maybe two hours all for about £3.10, If I had just paid £50 a ticket to see my favourite band and they were sh*t then I would be dissapointed but I am ok seeing a few middle aged guys knock out Dakota with or without a stand as long as it gets my foot tapping, I might even splash out and buy a second pint and a bag of salt and vinegar crisps if they are half reasonable
14. A bit of a racket? One of the Stone Roses has a similar 6 minute jam thing which it reminds me of quite a lot.
15. Well I hope we can all agree then that it's disgraceful in this day and age that you can walk into a pub for free and the band who might be getting paid £250 between five of them don't or can't put on a show equal to that of a fifteen hundred pound function band, I think it only right to walk out and go to another pub that hasn't got a band on at all yet will charge you exactly the same price if not a bit more per pint?
16. If some one was serious that they walk out without the band playing a note I suspect the band would be better off for that type of person not being in the audience, I'm sure we've all seen these experts explaining to their friends what you are doing wrong all night, just sucks the fun out of it IMO.
17. All my Yamahas have been two wheeled ones too, but all their basses I've tried have been great except one which strangely was the yamaha stands show piece Billy Sheehan at the bass day a few years ago which was a bit of a fail imo! 5 strings is the correct number imo
18. Double bass, Hat, glasses AND beard! Now that is a full house
19.
Honeyburst?! Where are you guys finding all these cool colours, I had a choice of black, white or walnut satin (which I have). I'd have loved a honeyburst one. I shouldn't complain too much as I got mine in a clearance sale, but I would have paid more for a snazzy colour.
Hey I like the walnut!
20. The obvious mistake is thinking things are easy, as someone that doesnt play much motown and not much more reggae I wouldn't say either are easy, they sound like they should be! There will be some excellent players on this site that can nail stuff I could only dream of, give them a pick and give them an acdc number and it goes to pieces, could be technically perfect but the x factor missing, very few drummers can play a solid 4 beat in a similar vein and they start playing 8 on the hats ime. Norman Watt Roy and Nathan Watts make everything look easy yet we know otherwise!
21. I have a feeling fashion news doesn't travel so well on fm then.....
22. Obviously a lefty and not had the strings fitted yet but this is the new James Dyson wireless vacuum bass, a right handed version will be made but only in shergold green as Adam Clayton is switching to Dysonbasses because its been over a week since he changed endorsees, the signature does come off with a baby wipe if it offends anyone. 23. That is right Diablo, I find that its best to play over the pickup when using a wireless setup as again that is going to get the signal to the amp quicker too, if you are playing something really fast on a regular basis I would suggest a really low action too, I think I read that for every 1mm of action off the 12th fret creates a 250ms delay, fretless basses are unaffected something to do with ebony wood absorbing the mhz but thats too technical for me
