1. I haven't even seen a pic of one of these for years, I played one exclusively from 89 to 93!
 2. And only 139 quid
 3. That might be so but I still see no reason for this signature bass, he has used every brand going, its not as if anyone would say ooh thats a AC bass before this model came out in the same way everyone knows what a Brian May guitar is. You are welcome to have a dig as an AC fan but it still wont make me like him, judging ability by success is for primary school children imo
 4. 3 gigs!? You are either a banker or you are using Rotosound strings?
 5.
A £3k bass direct from the luthier should be one hell of a bass, as you aren't having to pay retail costs... The luthier should make a profit but he doesn't have to factor in 30% or so to a shop/distributor. If that bass isn't waaaay better than some production bass you've brought for the same ballpark money, you have really gone to the wrong guy...and badly, IMO. When I had my first bass made, I told the luthier what I had looked at, and he said there was no doubt he would make me a better bass..and he was 110% right. Now, these could only just be words from some makers and that is where your homework comes in.
TBH I have played almost everybrand of bass at some point and as good as they have been I have never felt them to be that much better if at all really, fancy tops are one thing but a solid topped bass plays or sounds no worse so that is just a cost if it floats your boat, I use a SR505 some weeks and its more than good enough to cover any gig and capable of a super low action if required, good preamp, tidy build quality, good B string (no idea what scale it is?), If it makes the buyer happy so be it but I have never found them to be massively better than a good quality mass produced one, my Fender Jazz V has a great B, nicely finished and no dodgy build quality issues, my Stingray Classic5 is a minter too.
 6.
Keep it, for when we put a preamp on the Fenders
Ha you just know the East circuit is going to happen!
 7. Have the drugs worn off yet BeardyBob?
 8.
I'm hardly going to stay up all night without making it scientific, chaps! Same stripped van damnit cable with neutrik connectors, same stands, position & test equip, different sheathing. The differences in a darkened room were negligible versus colour. The differences with daylight lamp @ 2m were plotted. Thinking about it I need to check the weight of sheathings & guess plot each one versus its darkened state. #nonbelievers
I think you might find you will end up in a darkened room at this rate, probably with padded walls You do realise there is a massive floor in your test? Heat. Temperature has a direct relation to the conductivity of the cables so the whole test needs to be done with the cables at the same temperature with and without the light source.
 9.
Used to happen at a place I previously worked at. A lot. The store man eventually took pity on one poor lad who was sent round to get a replacement bubble for a spirit level - disassembled a spare level and gave him the glass bulb to take back. Was the last time that lad was sent on an errand.
I've heard a similar tale where the bloke sent the lad for a pound of glass nails from the hardware shop, he gave him a pound in money (this is the seventies) but it totally backfired when the lad returned with a pound in cost of tacks for holding in glass pains as the shop keeper thought that was probably what he wanted! Served him right, lol
 10.
Nice rig! Your prepared. Blue
Ta mate, looking at it now I actually have three di outputs to choose from there as the Fishman plat pro for the double bass has a di too and actually sounds great with electric bass anyway.
 11.
oh, so you're not interested in my results?
No Are they all the same brand of cable and the same cross sectional area of core and identical shielding, all exactly the same length with identical connectors on both ends?
 12. That's just crazy and also not going to work if you get a gig that requires volume because of the feed back from his mic, bizarre as you say!
 13. The green upvc molecules allow oxygen to enter the cable easier than the chemicals used in red coatings, the oxygen saturated cable then has a higher resistance than the red ones, black cables tend to allow more bass frequencies to pass which is ideal for dub or reggae.......only joking its bollocks
 14.
While I have that spare GK 1001rb, I still wonder if it would be worth it to ad either an MXR or Sans Amp DI to my pedal board? Blue
This is my setup Blue to give me 3 separate eq settings for DB, active bass and passive bass via the behringer on top, bit of a contraption but I could put my lead into the di box and put the xlr from the amp to the xlr out of it and finish the gig with just a bit of extra volume in my monitor. 15.
Accept your point Pete and can imagine how awkward a blown amp could be, is it really insurmountable ? I'd just chuck the bass through my monitor and struggle for the night. Anyway, taking a spare bass, as in the original post, isn't going to dig you out of a blown up amp.
When using a big pa on a big stage plus whatever your amp was chucking out foh it can take a bit of messing to get you in the monitor enough for yourself without annoying everyone else, on the other hand the band still needs to hear you too, I've been in the situation on another occasion (ashdown again, lol) and we had it sorted and sounding great on stage, best I had sounded and played for ages only to realise in the break that I wasn't coming out of the main pa as it was muted! Our resident heros will say that is a massive fail and why wasn't my personal bass tech on hand etc in reality under the pressure of the moment, the singer/guitarist being in charge of the pa not out front like a soundcheck, me day dreaming about how big my credit card bill will be once Mark at bass direct has taken payment for a new amp so I can get shut of the ashdown etc etc etc it was an easy mistake.
 16. Down the pub I could easily rig something up with the gear we use, my behringer bdi21 would be fine, just move the di cable from the faulty head to the di box and I'd be away, with the function band its not so easy so I sit the genz 3.0 on top of my big Genz head, I have a bit of a complex setup but I could ditch that in an emergency so its just one speakon, a power lead, an xlr from the di, and the input from my bass.
 17.
Yeah. I did test couple of these before, but haven't played the one i bought ... so guess there's a risk there, yes. Not sure what you refer to when you say 'thrown together' ...
Dont feed the troll
 18.
Some of you guys must be doing some great gigs if you feel the need to take spares of things like amps. If disaster eventually befalls me at the Dog and Duck, then it would be once in 30 odd years of gigging. I'll run the gauntlet with those odds. Les
I've stood looking at my blown Ashdown along with all the guests at a fancy wedding mate, it wasn't a nice experience nor was trying to rig up a temporary di box and re jig the fold back mid gig whilst they all stood around, class D head not much bigger than a vhs tape in my gig bag from then on thank you. I dont take it to the pub unless its a big pub as the pressure isnt on and the pa is much simpler than the big EV in the other band.
 19. Ive never used a stand on stage but I have been known to gig with an erection
 20.
And quickly as well. Very easy to get a workable sound with a P-Bass.
Unless you are me in the same way I know you are with the MM!
 21.
Rockabilly?

Classical music? lol
I was kind of thinking genres where other brands of bass would be used but I'll let you both off
 22.
It were a joke, if a flimsy one... COAT ON AND AWAY WE GO
ha oh right,
 23.
My question is this: Should a more professional player who in essence doesn't need a music stand still carry a music stand with him or her, because they are more professional and it would be unprofessional to need one on occasion and not to have one?
Dont forget the spare one too.
 24.
Well, they all sound pretty flimsy excuses to me
If I offered you a gig for thursday night, 35 songs, 15 you know, 10 you have heard before, 10 are totally new to you and half of the set is in a different key to the record could you do it without any notes at all? Good on you if you can but some people think its ok to take 6 months to learn 20 songs to start a band up with a weekly practice and even then might use notes so I just dont see the problem. Fwiw my own stand has never left the house.
 25.
Why are function bands let off the hook?
Its likely that a pro function band will have more deps both more often and more of them at once, a band gigging all year round maybe 3 times a week will have people off sick, maternity leave, holidays, work with other bands etc just like us weekend warriors do with our regular jobs, I dont need a set of instructions for my day job but someone bought in to cover my job would for some parts of it, a dep glued to a chart for Mustang Sally might not be the go to guy I agree. The other thing is the fact they are more likely to be playing up to date music almost as quick as it hits the charts (excuse the pun) , or themed music or requested music for first dances etc which are often not known songs worth learning for the regular set. I'm sure there are other good reasons I've missed?
