1.
Smoke on the water is a sh*tload of 1/8ths on the same note right? As weird as it sounds, playing the same note repeatedly is very memory-intense. If the playback is uneven, it usually means the browser's buffering can't keep up. You could also try to playback with a lower BPM. (Or choose a tune with a walking bass line ) Tip: When I transcribe a classic rock song with the typical 1/8 machine-gunning going on, I just play 1/4ths or halves and then change the tab after copy-pasting into a text editor afterwards.
I was playing the intro riff: G Bb C, G Bb C# C etc - so yes the app gives me the accurate tab but it's tough to get the timing right. Might next effort was Enter Sandman: ||: E E E E E E E F :|| which gets a bit bumpy probably due to the buffering problem you mention. Any tips on how to increase buffer size?
 2. I'm joking What would be good is to drag around the notes once you've played them - I just played the Smoke On The Water intro. The tab was right but the playback was lumpy and the timing different to what I played. I'm using Google Chrome on Windows XP, sp3
 3. Maybe they'll fix the mix before Friday's show. They did with Vintage Trouble a couple of weeks ago.

 5. Thanks for the new thread! Paul will probably appreciate us butting out of his "for sale" pitch too. Here's my 8/4 from the other thread... And my 12/4:
 6. +1 for Etymotic ER-20. Less than a tenner on eBay - I recently bought another pair from seller hear_for_life, who come recommended. They turn the volume down without muffling the sound. You can hear loud gigs better with them in.
 7.
It was black with maple necks. Will check but think the 4 string was on the top. I think it had single pick-ups but will check and try emailing a scanned copy of the photo. Shergold didn't make an 8 string bass at that time. I think we are talking circa 1978/80 period. Was a while ago so might be out a year or so. It cost me £630. I still have some photos of it. Quite a heavy beast from memory although i was only 5'9" and 9.5 stone in those days. Can't remember who i dealt with at the time but it was suggested using the shorter 6 string neck they had at the time and convert to 8 string. If its same bass it will obviously have the shorter 8 string neck. They went on to make full scale 8 string necks after this if my memory serves me correctly. I traded it for an Aria SB1000 early 80's and have regretted selling since. More for sentimental reasons. It was my first venture into custom basses. Cheers Dave PS If its same bass and you ever think about selling let me know. I'd be interested.
So there's at least two of them out there! Mine is white. I've got a picture somewhere that I'll dig out later. It's a lot more basic in terms of electronics and hardware than my 12/4, so I suspect it's originally from the mid-70s, compared to the late 70s of the 12/4. I've had some work done - the 8 neck was bowed in a way that the truss rod couldn't fix: it was fine above the 5th - 7th fret, but lower than that was unplayable - if exaggerated it'd look like the business end of a ski. This was caused by not letting the wood sit for long enough before gluing it - a common fault with this era and manufacturer, apparently. The repairer unglued the fingerboard vveerryy slowly and reset it once the wood had been given a chance to settle. Also, I had a new nut installed so I could reverse the sense of the tuning - the octave strings are now closer to the floor than the fundamentals, as I always play fingerstyle. If I sold the bass on I'd switch back. The 4-string neck is typical Shergold - plummy, woolly 70s rock. I paid £450 for it in the early 2000s, maybe 2002 or 03. I've had a case made for its big brother (the 12/4 Custom Double), and this one inherited the hand-me-down case. I've had it valued and it's now insured for well above that value. The serial number is 8401. Shergold SNs were often (for double necks) made up of the two necks' string counts, then a production count. So my 8401 translates to 8-str, 4-str, and I've got instance "01". It's possible I may have the first 8/4, but I can't be certain. See http://www.shergold.co.uk/serialnos.html for a better description of this. (There are pics of the 12/4 on the "Genesis tribute bands" page of the Shergold site, btw).
 8.
Love these Shergolds. I had a twin neck 4 & 8 string basses circa 78/79 and they had great necks and a distinctive sound to match. Good luck with sale. Cheers Dave
I have a Shergold 4/8 here as well - yours the only other one I've ever heard of. What colour and config was yours?
 9.
Two of them have come to a Full Stop though.
I prefer their psychedelic period
 10. Rocco Prestia once said of his upcoming "solo" album, "There are a few instrumentals, but I'm not a soloist. When people ask why I don't solo, I always say I feel like I'm soloing all the time". So, what he said.
 11.
Not really needed though... Just take an allen key to gigs, if the strings seem a little flat or sharp just move the bridge saddles back and forth to counter the pitch problem. Soon enough your bass will be perfectly in tune and you won't need to bother with those pesky tuning pegs at all This method also negates the use of frets which leaves one hand free for punching the air
The guitarist in my band will simply g-clamp his trem arm into a position such that all 6 strings are on average in tune.
 12.
Yes, yes, yes, YES, YES and a thousand times YES. Fretless + piezo + filter preamp = hot fretless sex.
Yeah. I've got a fretless Stingray with 3-band EQ and piezo. I can probably count on all of my thumbs the number of times a bassist has said to me after a gig "um so why's your Stingray got 5 knobs then" Agree with most - trust your ears and you won't need lines.
 13. On a red Marlin P-copy, various bit and pieces of easy Zep, the Doors. Then my dad said one day quite innocently "what can you play all the way through?" errrm. So I went off and found the nearest "Guitar For The Practicing Musician" which had Enter Sandman conveniently tabbed out and learnt that. ||: Dum dum dum dum dum dum dum DUM :||

 15. Hoping to come along to the Spice - any idea what time you're on?

 17. I started off a bassist, and still consider myself very much that, but noodled around badly on guitar as well. I ended up paying my dues as the Rutherford in various Genesis tribute bands, so had to do my share of 12-string fingerpicking and strumming too. It's definitely helped in knowing my way around the neck on both instruments.

 19. +1 for the Trace Elliot SMX Dual Comp. Had one in my chain for ages, still got it somewhere. It's been replaced in the last couple of years by the Analogman Bi-Comprossor - see http://www.analogman.com/rossmod.htm about half way down the page. Very happy with it. (18 month waiting list though)
 20. +1 for the lights! It's not a Genesis gig without the lightshow. It must be getting busy in your neck of the woods what with Face Value and The Carpet Crawlers doing the rounds. Do you cross paths much?
 21.
So the Overground is %^&*ed but the District Line from Earls Court is OK.
Unless you want to go towards Wimbledon or Edgware Road
 22.
Not according to National Rail, it's not. On Saturday morning it looks fine. (Especially when you compare with next Saturday: nearly 2 hours to go from Croydon to Kensington ) On Sunday, yes, it seems to be shut til lunchtime.
nationalrail.co.uk is generally the last to know about these things. Rely on TFL info more (but not 100% of course). The weekly "here comes the weekend's cock-ups" email from TFL says this about the Overground network: On Saturday, there is no service between Gospel Oak and Highbury & Islington. On Sunday, there is no service between Richmond and Stratford. On Sunday, there is no service between Gospel Oak and Barking. On Sunday, there is no service between New Cross Gate and West Croydon. On Sunday, there is no service between Sydenham and Crystal Palace. On Sunday, before 1330, there is no service between Clapham Junction and Shepherd's Bush. On Sunday, there is no service between Shepherd's Bush and Willesden Junction. So, generally ok on Saturday; you'll be lucky on Sunday. Here's the tube map for affected lines all weekend: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/livetravelnews/r...?offset=weekend (hover over a line to get the full story).
 23.
Fair point Pete about the "maybe we're crap and she was right all along" and I understand what you're saying but I'm afraid you'll just have to trust me on this one. Her drumming was reminiscent of Charlie Drake falling down the stairs with a tin dustbin. If you're that good, you'd at least be able to listen to what the other players are doing and lock in to at least one of them. She was totally unaware of anyone else in the room and even her dad's eyebrows were going up and down a bit Probably wondering where all his tuition money had gone. Anyway, all over now, I wished her well for the future and she'll make that, whatever she makes it.
There's a strong argument here for always recording auditions and rehearsals
