Another +1 for Maiden - but aim for a steady stream of 8th (or 16th) notes rather than the Maiden "gallop". This means you'll have a different finger on the "one" each time, but it'll feel ok after a bit of practice. Start at a comfortable BPM and work up to your target by 5 BPM every day. Don't try to do too much too soon and strain something!

The singer's resigned as well now! He can't afford the time from the other bands/gigs he's committed to in the search for a new drummer. In the meantime, guitarist and I will be moping in a pub somewhere in Putney tonight. What tales of band woe have you got to make me feel better?

Hello I've just had the drummer of a band resign on the day of a rehearsal - and as I'm sure you know we're liable for 100% of the cost of the studio if we pull out at short notice. Good work! Good luck for the final. I lived in Horsham in the early 1990s and my first ever band was in the Battle of the Bands three years running. We came 2nd, 3rd and erm unplaced respectively. Does it still take place in the bandstand outside Waitrose? It were all fields, etc.

Incidentally, one of my bands is currently working on a cover that's somewhere between the original, the BBA version and Stevie Ray Vaughan's live version. In the SRV version, Tommy Shannon does a great job of picking out the right bits of the arrangement for the bassline. See if you can track down a copy. (Of course it's in Eb rather than E though)

Sturdy and comfy on my Jazz bass. My favourite strap is the D'Addario with the sliding shoulder strap. No more shirt-tugs! They're hard to come by these days though - I got my most recent from www.shopoftheworld.com, couldn't find them in a recent search though.

Thanks for the reply - currently my rehearsals are all in and around London on so I do it all by public transport. The current setup is ageing Stagg (or similar) gig bag plus a Samsonite wheelie suitcase which despite being pretty sturdy is also feeling the strain. I think if I can get my essentials in a sturdy gig bag and ditch the wheelie I'd be on to a winner and more relaxed journey for me and anyone who's sadly been on the receiving end of a bass/wheelie case combination in rush hour. Dear Santa...

Good idea to video it - also I've found that doing an extra clip for the tricky or important bits helps too. Otherwise +1 to writing out the music. Or getting the new boy to do it for himself.
