1. Is the Line6 JM-4 majorly expensive? About £200 I think.
2. Absolutely - brilliant, world class drummer. Very good singer late 70s/early-mid 80s Genesis, but his songwriting mostly schmaltzy. His current Motown project - embarassing.
3.
Meh.. I disagree. The Lady Lies, No Reply at All, Me & Sarah Jane, Behind the Lines, Illegal Alien.... I wouldn't say it was rare! However, We Can't Dance and Calling All Stations were rotten attempts. He might as well have not bothered.
The Lady Lies is one the very rare exceptions BTL is great too admittedly. I love MASJ but never thought the bass playing was stand-out. NRAA surprises me as it's the one track on Abacab I will pretty much always skip, and I find the bass line a bit cheesy. Shame as otherwise Abacab is just about the last good album. (Genesis has a very good first side then loses it completely on side two - that's track 5 onwards, CD fans) Also - what I meant to add about the Hackett clip that kicked this off: what's *really* missing is Moog Taurus bass synth.
4.
I agree about SO being the definitive version, but IMO JW's interpretation is nothing like Rutherford's, and it's not as good.
IYO Mike Rutherford's bass-playing took a back seat when he took over guitar duties after Steve Hackett left. Post-W&W it's a very rare bassline indeed that's as much fun to listen to or play as the early/mid-70s stuff. Maybe if a comparable bassist of Wetton's stature had joined on Hackett's departure, things might have been different.
5. JW's playing in that clip is a lot closer to Rutherford's playing in the definitive live version of the song - the version on Second's Out. I think it's a worthy and interesting variation to the line - and much more interesting than the original, which is plodding and lazy in comparison (to both Second's Out and JW's interpretation). (Incidentally, if you want a new definition of "inappropriate", any interpretation of Hackett's guitar solo by Daryl Steurmer should be under consideration). As for Genesis, I blame Phil Collins' first divorce. You can plot a line from there of ever-decreasing quality where the drama, magic and thrill of the music gives way to limp pop and love songs. I was in the local sandwich shop yesterday when such a song came on. "sigh, Phil Collins ballads sure are rubbish - glad they were never this bad in Genesis" I thought. Then I realised in was In Too Deep
6.
The novelist Graham Greene entered, under an assumed name, a competition to see who could best parody the style of Graham Greene. He came second.
Surely he was the third man
7. I did a gig which was a record-breaking endurance effort by one of the band - Guinness rules stipulate that there's a maximum time limit allowed between songs of barely a few seconds. I had to switch from bass to guitar for the last song, so arranged with one of the gig's stewards to do a guitar switcheroo at the end on the last-but-one song, which I start after a quick nod to the rest of the band to make sure everyone's ready. I had to play bass synth pedals as well for this last song, so had to be in place at the front of the stage. The last-but-one song ends, the switch goes well, I'm back in place ready to go. But the gig's ended - the record's broken, gig curfew time is fast approaching without time for the last song: the local BBC News crew are onstage filming and the crowd's applauding and cheering the event. Job's a good 'un. So, I take off my guitar and put it back on its stand, join in the applause with the rest of the band for the record-breaking musician. I move towards the steward who took my bass. she's applauding too. It's a Jetglo 1975 Ricky 4001 btw. Hey, where's my bass I say. Oh I propped it up against the banister on the stairs leading down to the dressing room just over there, she points. At nothing. At the banister, obviously not supporting anything except fresh air. I look where she's pointing. She looks at me. I look at her. We both look back. It's still not there. My beloved Rick had slipped from it's precarious position and fallen/bounced neck-first down the 6 or 8 concrete steps that lead to the back-stage dressing room. Lucky lucky me - the only scratch was a little scrape across the top edge of the headstock. I still see the steward occasionally, she's always glad to be reminded of the occasion...
8. Record it on one of those new-fangled VCRs or similar. Watch it the next day. "Fast forward" through the bits you don't like. Think of the hours you'll save!
9.
I leave each rig with each drummer
Are they available for other bands please
10. My typical rehearsal/gig requirements mean that I can get around on public transport with a sturdy gig bag on my bag, and a medium wheelie suitcase for pedals, cables, etc. This of course means I'm using someone else's amp or going straight into the PA; if I really need my own amp I'll hire a car or share a ride with another band member. I don't own a car - haven't for a few years, I generally get by ok without. Despite that I'm a member of by-the-hour car rental scheme Streetcar, which comes in very handy.
11. Welcome to London! You'll have a blast. Buy Time Out every week. Go through the gigs section and go to a different venue or see a different band every time. They list the entry price so you can pick out the free/cheap ones if money's tight. You're spoilt for choice in that part of town with Camden nearby and local KT venues that others have mentioned. Go to gigs and get chatting to people - you'll make contacts just by seeing the same faces at venues or following bands. Sign up to every ticket agency and venue's website and mailing list you can think of. I've got a dedicated email address just for this. Look on gumtree for bands looking for bass players, there's usually no shortage.
12. Sounds like your current bandmates are stopping the band progressing by their obstinate nature. You're doing all the work, so tell them it's their turn to look for a singer. Let them find someone suitable, and say you'll be ready when they are. In the meantime, start up something new with the singer you've mentioned, who sounds positive, talented and flexible. If the other two band members answer your ads, make sure you include "The Pina Colada Song" as an audition piece.
13. Hi - I bought a Markbass Super Booster pedal from martin8708, he was helpful and prompt in answering questions, posted the item quickly and packaged it like a pro. Thumbs up! Tone
14. I love Pino's new band. Who's the guy on guitar?
15. When recording in the studio I'd be happy to use whatever the engineer/producer thinks is appropriate for the song - if anything, then whatever he's experienced with. For home recording, I'd use a stomp box in preference to software, again if it's needed. In rehearsal, typically I'm either using the studio's amps or going straight to the PA via DI box. In both cases I'll use a stomp box, as firstly with all amps pointing into the middle of the room, things can get muddy quickly and I find compression helps prevent the bass from overwhelming the room while maintaining an appropriate volume. I've got a Trace Elliot Dual Compressor and a Analogman Bicomprossor, both in active rotation (although not at the same time)
16.
So the Hereford date actually happened then? I literally only just found out about it! Nobody I know is into jazz/fusion so wouldn't have paid any attention if they knew. I am so incredibly annoyed I didn't know about it if it went ahead!
Nope, the Hereford gig was the cancelled one, and the Boom Boom Club date replaced it.
17.
Focus are still touring!... if you get the chance to see them do so!...Great live band.
They're on the Prog Stage at the High Voltage festival in Victoria Park, Saturday July 24.
18. Yep, Hocus Pocus. Dig this clip from 1973. Stay tuned for the near-explosion caused by the whistling solo towards then end.
19.
Meant to include this link in my previous post: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Days_%28The_Kinks_song%29
Agree with the above - here's the song on youtube. 20.
I really like a lot of the songs but I Just Called makes me whince.
Sure. At Hyde Park we got one verse and one chorus and the ending (cha cha cha). I'm happy to put up with that in exchange for Living for the City, Higher Ground, Superstition, I Wish, Another Star, Sir Duke, Master Blaster, We Can Work It Out, Uptight, For Once In My Life, Fingertips, Signed Sealed Delivered...
21.
That's because Superstition has a keyboard bass, played by SW originally. Also, its in Eb, but then I think there's enough Eb in SWs set to make Nate detune his bass by a semi-tone, as I understand.
Fans of the original Superstition might like this: http://homerecording.about.com/od/mixingyo...uperstition.htm - a track-by-track breakdown of the recording. Nate played the song on bass guitar at the O2 a couple of years ago. I thought it was a refreshing change to see him on keyb bass for a few songs. Plus he gets a sit down - it was a hot day.
22. Hope this comes in handy: http://preview.tinyurl.com/35q5bm4 I've been to many but not all, and pretty much agree with what's been said so far (but wouldn't give Survival such a hearty welcome, I'm afraid). Also, I like Rogue in Bermondsey - not easy to get to but among the cheaper options, and rather unusually and refreshingly has an online booking system.
23. Six brilliant bass players in three days: Dr Matt Destruction Jeff Ament Paul Jamiroquai Nathan Watts P-Mac and Stevie's left hand looking forward to it!
24.
Ive got to play this live soon filling in ...spotted this version by the Black Crowes and loved it..awsome groove..whos that plying the Sadowsky? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09WlrVnramo
That's half of Dave Letterman's house band: Paul Schaffer on keys, Anton Fig on drums, and Will Lee on bass.
