Is this still here? I'd have one over an American Standard! I prefer the necks by a mile.
+ 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 Got the black version of this and it's immense. Neck is better than US IMO too. I saw this ages ago and I've had to talk myself out of buying it numerous times (especially as I was in Stockport last weekend!!!) as I really don't NEED it Someone will get a MASSIVE bargain with this. Stunning bass for the price.

Totally agree with Doddy. It's all about technique and your own style coming from that. If that wasn't the case, all the famous players wouldn't keep switching amps/endorsements all the time. People who spend such silly amounts of money crafting a specific sound, appear to do so as a way of searching for the missing character/style in their playing, mistaking their playing style for some "sound" that only money and high-end rigs can create. Like Doddy said already, "the sound in your head" should come from your fingers and should sound like you on any bass/rig. Then you can use your rig to refine what you already have by using slight tweaking (i.e. some EQ tweaks or altering compression slightly) to play on any idiosyncrasies of your gear.
That's the irony isn't it Lojo, Being too busy playing to learn how to read which is part of the against reading camps argument but I still think a basic knowledge for jotting down songs and riffs would help especially in the situations your in now with 40 tracks to learn.
I agree. Trying to quickly transcribe the tracks you're learning means you can use the notes as prompts in the first few rehearsals and transcribing lines is a great way to practice your reading without sitting down and playing through already notated pieces.

That's a great looking flightcase! The orange laminate is a particularly nice touch. Money well spent IMO. I have a feeling this may start a trend!
God the playing in that video is abysmal - reminds me of me aged 17.... Lovely bass though.
God that comment for that video is absymal - reminds me of an immature and cowardly yet HILARIOUS 11 year old (LOLZ... ROFL?) Lovely bass though.

The playlist is amazing, but I keep finding myself drawn to 'Show Me The Real You'... The other tracks in the playlist are incredible, but as an avid following/fan of Pino, I think that track in particular captures something REALLY magical in Pino's playing. That track would be nothing without Pino's part in it.
It's because you are playing with the wrong guys.
And probably spending too much of your time obsessing over tone.
Unfortunately I couldn't read the whole introduction on the website. After the 4th time they used that dreadful American habit of referring to people as things (artists that..., players that..., people that...) I gave up. Objects are thats, people are whos, if that's OK with you, America.
YEAH! I hate people that do that... Sorry, it had to be done
Totally Agree......................................even got a fiver for me muvva...bless her. Every thing has its price.. YEP EVERYTHING For sale genuine 1965 USA Fender Jaguar with upgraded pups & 51 Esquire with Callaham modifications or 71 USA Telecaster..................IF the price is right
IMO I disagree. My main jazz bass has no price. It's sentimental value and the emotional attachment I have to it (and the link to the person who bought it for me) really does not have a price. It will be with me forever. End of.

Yup, count me in too. Always nice to help a fellow basschatter in such things

I totally agree about the local wildlife thing. Cats are designed to stalk and kill prey. Most of the local cats where I live are often killing young birds, rabbits and other creatures and it's entirely down to irresponsible ownership (in my particular area, obviously not in ALL cases)... I say this because every cat I've seen killing birds and rabbits etc around our area does not have a bell on it's collar. A responsible owner should put a bell on their cat's collar so that it will give an ample warning to prey so that they can (hopefully) escape.

Added the following tracks/players: The Roots feat. Erykah Badu - You Got Me (Bass by Leonard 'Hub' Hubbard) The Roots - The Next Movement (Bass by Leonard 'Hub' Hubbard) D'Angelo - Brown Sugar (Bass by the one and only Pino Palladino)

Do you have a cat like this one? If you do, I'd be interested in taking him/her in (and maybe giving them a few lessons lol)
In the wake of the Andy Gray / Richard Keys controversy, perhaps Musicpeople is safer?
Surely 'music' discriminates against those without any musical ability whatsoever? How about 'Soundpeople'?
Musicman Basses
Definately this, but why don't we just make it up anyway? Music blokes?

Own up, did you think your bass/guitar was plastic?
skej21 replied to waynepunkdude's topic in General Discussion
agreed. I remember my first instrument was a clarinet that was definitely made out of plastic, still made a wonderfull "woody" noise. Didn't realise it was plastic until I switched to a new school band at about 13/14 and another kid who had a "proper" wooden instrument turned his nose up at mine and made me feel about 2 inches tall.
I think a "plastic" family in the orchestra to replace the "woodwind" would definately be an improvement... -
I remember the days when Thomann used to be quite reasonable with pricing, but 899€ is just a joke. Maybe Sue Ryder might start doing a version?

Just had to add this to the list. Damn Aggy and their AMAZING gear! SL410 EDIT: Forgot to add the obligatory *DROOOOOOOOOOOL*

These look great! She clearly has a partner who is a GAS fiend and knew that these would fly off the shelf! I'm VERY VERY tempted by the red one... and as she probably knew, I'd bet I'm not the only one who is finding it extremely difficult to talk myself out of buying one lol.

I think what he means is "I don't like bass because it's the only thing on my album that's good and is the bit I didn't write/play"
Exactly A one of my mates introduced me to a guy down the pub, saying I was a good bassist, and this guy immediately said he could take me in a "bass-off", as he was the best bassist around. I`m not interested in saying I`m the best, mainly cos I`m not, and won`t ever be, but did feel the need to enquire: How many bands had he played in - none How many drummers had stated that they found it easy to play and lock in with his bass-playing - none Could he, without any other instruments playing, play along to one of his favourite songs in his head, and at the same time record it, 5 seperate times, and each time the total recorded time would be within 1 or 2 seconds of each other - no In the words of Yoda "His bass-off, myself, did not threaten, mmm". I didn`t state whether I could do all/any of the above, felt no need.
*Stands up and salutes/applauds Lozz196* However, I don't think I would have gotten half the gigs and work if there hadn't been one of these arrogant bedroom players making life hell, overplaying and messing stuff up in the band/pit before I got there. They do a great job of making functional, sensitive and "simple" bass players look a lot more professional and employable by setting such a bad example to start with lol.
-
I'm shocked that nobody has brought this up already (and I know it's been posted on here before but people may have missed it) but if you want to develop good timing try watching this by Victor Wooten. I personally think the way Wooten uses the metronome to develop a good internal sense of timing is something every bassist should practice and understand and this exercise is one of the best ways I think you can practice on your own. It's improved my playing no end. You should especially watch this if you're having issues with timing and practice it... LOTS!
-
Anyone who thinks that "keep it simple" = boring is clearly just a poor, egotistical and immature musician. Personally, I think one of the biggest challenges any musician faces is the point in their playing when they have to choose whether to hold back, be functional, subtle and sensitive or let their ego run wild (bearing in mind the great solo players were all great functional players first!). One route leads to gigs, the other leads you to a lifetime of lonely bedroom playing... we all know which is which

Kirk Douglas... great player and if worst came to worst, would just end up sitting back on a tasty groove! Ideal IMO. He also gets into my list just for his work on this alone.

Teeth. I refuse to play unless I can do the whole thing with my teeth.
