1. Inspirational stuff He's got a new album on the way. edit: it's out on the 14th
2. The first bass I bought was a second hand Thumb bolt-on. It was a fantastic bass to learn on and in my first couple of years playing bass it saw a good 4 hours + of play time every day. I still have that bass because I always come back to it, it feels so natural to play - probably because it's shaped my technique. There's something very unique about the mid's of a Thumb bolt on, and as Shizznit says ^ the sustain is very impressive! A harmonic on the 12th fret E string rings out like it doesn't want to stop!
3. Oh, it's the special edition pimp model, you get this suit with it too:
4. I've played a Jazz aerodyne a fair bit and thought it was great, the P/J pickup combo works great
5. I put a set of Wizard 84's in my Thumb and they took away from the punchy mids so the MEC's went straight back in, but then different Warwick models vary a lot in their natural midrange so that might only be the case for the Thumb. GregBass, I'd recommend tweaking your EQ as a first port of call. The 3 basses you have are very different so it's normal that you should have to adjust your amp for each bass. If this doesn't do the trick you could try raising your pickups on the D and G side, just loosen the pickup screws a little under the D and G and see how it sounds. If you don't have any joy with that you could try a different gauge of strings, or maybe even a different brand. What gauge and brand of strings are you using at the moment?
6. I used to own one. I thought it was very good all round, the amount of controls on the pedal is nice but I ended up finding it a bit excessive since I only use a compressor very subtly these days. It's a powerful pedal, you can squash the hell out of your tone with it if needs be! I can't fully recall the sound quality, but from what I remember it was fine; no nasty colouring of your tone. I don't know if it's still the case, but on my version of the pedal the power supply was built in, which is a complete pain if you're running a pedal board and want to use one power supply for all pedals.
7.
Yeah I had a micro pog. Used a daisy chained 9v diago power station with it for 2 years with no problems whatsoever.
+1
8. I used to play in a stoner rock band, it was great fun. I wish we'd pushed the band more but it was just something we worked at over a couple of summers whilst the guys in the band were back from uni http://soundcloud.com/whatnow123/high-willhays-b-o-b
Here is my 1974 Fender Jazz bass in black The pick up cover, bridge cover, and thumb rest have been removed and stored.
Nice! Black/maple is always such a cool combo on a jazz bass.
10. The lowest I've tuned a bass and still liked the tone of it was CGCF, although this took some perseverance to find a gauge of strings that I liked for it. I usually use 40-100's in standard tuning and I settled with Rotosound 45-65-85-115 in the end. The 115 had pretty similar tension to the other strings.
11. I've been through a few different compressors: EHX Black Finger, DBX 160a, Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter and I've finally settled on a Demeter Compulator for the last few years. I've really liked all the compressors I've owned but the reason I've chopped and changed with them is due to the rest of my setup changing a fair bit. For example I really liked the sound of the DBX with my Markbass rig but couldn't stand it with my Orange AD200B. So my thoughts on compressors echo that of what others are saying. Try them out, if you can run them through your setup that would be very beneficial because that's when you'll really figure out if you like that pedal or not.
12. Radio 6 for me and a bit of jazz fm if I'm feeling saucy.
13. Bought a bass from Dave, pleasure to do business with. The bass was well packed and delivered very quickly. Thanks
14. you've got to be quick off the draw round here! Been after one of these for a while. Anyone else want to sell me theirs?
15. Stop beating around the bush and play some Queen songs! Better still, play Killer Queen.
16. I started playing bass because I was playing guitar in a band that needed a bassist. It was a steep learning curve to get up to scratch but I got so into I joined another band on bass a few months later... here I am 9 years on

18. That reply to restaurant is absolutely bang on, but this sounds like a bit of a different scenario to me, since it's the village you live in. I agree with Truckstops sentiment.
19. I've got a Fender MIM jazz that has had 4 different kinds of pickups in it: the standard set, then EMG J-set, then Wizard 84s and finally a set of pickups from an Fender USA Jazz. I like the USA jazz pickups best, but that's just because I like the characteristics of them in my sound. The EMGs and the Wizards were great pickups, but I just prefer the tone of USA jazz set. I'd recommend trying some different sets out, they're easy enough to install and the second hand market for pickups is pretty good on BC.
20.
Listen, if we're going to bash anyone in this thread, why do we have to stick to poor old Peart (and I chose my words...)? From the Bonham era, I have several who could be considered 'bashable', for various reasons.
I was gunning for a bit of a Bonham appreciation thread when I posted up the link, how did we get to the Peart bashing?
21.
+1 Couldn't live without my Rusty Box.
Same here. I put it in my setup about 3 years ago and it's the only part of my rig that hasn't changed whilst most of my other gear has.
22.
It's a properly aggressive sort of tone that still really cuts through a pair of guitars but backs them up when they're both doing a harmony or whatever.
If you're after aggressive tone that always cuts through check out the Rusty Box. This solution might avoid having to sell your current setup.
23. I'm a GK convert and have been very happy with my 800RB over the past few years. Duff used an 800RB back in the day, he bought one when Guns N Roses got their first advance. It's a great amp, but it's not gritty. It's got a punchy character to it and it sounds quite aggressive if the boost is cranked. I use a Rusty Box for adding a bit of dirt and livening up the tone. I'm not sure how the newer GK heads really compare though. If you can find a second hand 800RB they go for around £250-£300, and my opinion on them is that they work great as a solid, fat tone but they need a little something extra to help your sound stand out.
24.
To be fair, Peart has influenced plenty of drummers - just not as many as Bonham...!
Bonham had a head start too!
