1. Right so I finally get try one care of Andertons in Guilford. They Set me up in their 'Bass room' with the BTB33 into a nice Markbass combo and left me to it. It's a really cool bass: through-neck, barts, 3-band EQ, mono-rail bridge. However, after playing for a while I realised that I wasn't getting much more than a standard 5. So yes it's up a forth which is OK if that suits your music but other than that, it's the same number of notes as any other 5-string 24-fret give or take (it has a weird s-shaped neck end). Also the 33" scale was pretty much undetectable in comparison with my GB 35" scale. Similar position and string tension. (In contrast, an Alembic SC with 31" scale reduced the strings to floppy butter making everyone Stanley (almost) with sheer effortless of playing.) So my verdict was not to buy, but for someone without a 5, or entering the market for a 5, it's a hell of a bass for the money...
2. It's the incredible Mick Karn. Quite a line-up! As stated above, a similar line-up did a great job of a great Kate Bush song with Pete Townsend instead of MU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJvXpvH2-Hk This utilises MK's talents much more... RIP Mick.

Strange Bass

Welcome to the forum. On a minor point there is a 'bass guitar' specific forum but seems everyone posts everything in general now and the moderators just let it happen. Madness. Anyway, in response to your question. I'm going to go with a gut feel based on its Alembic morphing into a Carl Thompson which says to me an American builder by the name of Ron Blake. Also the banjo peg-head is also redolent of his work. Bit of wild suggestion I know and I've no other basis other than aesthetics. Do you have any indication of its provenance? Could it have been imported from America? Visog
4. Well I enjoyed them last night at the Lowry. The three drummers worked really well to my ears. I think due to their tight rehearsal and arrangements. Also 'middle drummer' played a lot of mellotron on the older songs. Didn't think I'd get to hear 'Easy Money' live! It was great, as was 'Schizoid Man', 'Court of the Crimson King', 'Epitaph' and the mighty 'Starless'. As near to a greatest hits tour that Fripp will do. Winning back his rights to his royalties probably influenced his decision. Anywho Tony Levin was on top form equipped with Salmon 5-string MM and his 4-string with 'Three of a Perfect Pair' paint job. And his stick and EUB (Steinberger?). Well done all concerned...
5. Hi all, Anyone tried one of these yet? Looks like a good blend of tone shaping and housekeeping all in a single unit. http://www.isptechnologies.com/portfolio/beta-bass-preamp-pedal/ And here in review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J7UiDQQBWQ
6. Tasty...
7. Am I missing something? Did JE play or own this? (somehow justifying the 5-digit price?)
8. Get over to Bass Direct: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Brute_MJX5_Black.html One in stock...
9. Not to mention tips on correcting g-string slot mis-alignment...
10. I'd recommend Allan Holdsworth latest track 'Earth'. Killer Jimmy Johnson solo on one of his Alembics... Note, you'll have to pledge to Allan's project but I think it will be well worth it when all the tracks are released... 11.
I'll pass on such frippery.
Did you see what I did there? Anywho, looking forward to the Manchester dates!!!!

17. I bet that'll be different. I caught Jonas years ago with the reformed Mahavishnu and then duetting with John McLaughlin. He used his double-neck Wal for that! He certainly was very sloppy by today's standards...
18. Ray - thanks for your response but we're beyond aesthetics now... It is what it is... me wanna try with a view to buy... Please tell me where you've seen one on UK soil...
19. Has anyone seen one of these in the flesh yet? I'm gassing for one but I'd like to try it first... ? Please let me know of any shop sightings...
20. Played Warwickhunt's Flashback years ago... very heavy! But interesting... Can't help thinking - get a through-neck for the sustain without the weight... but I know the NT changes the the natural compression a little over a bolt-on. Pretty rare bird these days...
21.
Go, Kevin. You have something exceptional on offer there, bro. Keep up the good work.
+1 Cracking!... Reminded me a bit of IOU album (in a good way). Must be good if Bilbo didn't say... 'it didn't swing...', or 'would be better on acoustic bass', or 'not enough beards' or 'more elbow patches' p.s. Preston, Glasgow and Lowestoft sounds like the worst tour schedule imaginable.
22. Makes my gassing look positively conservative! Great collection and commentary. I like how your interest extends from the exotic custom to the everyday basses many more of us have enjoyed...
23. Would love to help out... but I'm up North. As Bernie is on the South Coast too, I'm sure many of his basses have migrated across towards you. If you can, try out both a neck-through and one of Bernie's bolt-ons which are great too and have a super-secure six bolt join. The 'B' string are fantastic, ring out well, are usable all the way up the neck and have a consistent tone with the rest.
24.
Actually you can argue with that. With the utmost respect, where Yes go next has absolutely nothing to do with Chris Squire.
Well I guess being harsh about it, Mr Squire can't do much from the afterlife if you believe in that sort of thing. In every other dimension it has everything to do with him as the only original member. From now on in, unless they get JA back as an original, it has no legitimacy apart from the album to album authority on which individual members appeared.
25. Great thread... Enjoyed everyone's choices... I'll go with three: first and old one with the much missed Chris Squire being supremely musical as ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-rdL2KkvzY Godlike tune. Great melodies. In terms of harmony, this fried my head - the great Jimmy Johnson on bass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2HlyupMt8A And here's a wild card for anyone looking for something melodic but different: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU9CvQztcrI
