The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Pretty Things and Animals were a bad influence on everyone in the 60's, and I was going to the party. I was going to be rich, cool and famous. In any order! The Spanish guitar my parents bought me had an action you could fly a plane under. I couldn't press all 6 strings down at the same time, so no chords, just single notes. A friend and I got together to play songs and all I could do was single notes. He showed me the bass lines and hey presto, turns out I could do that. The penny dropped and my course was set. An electric bass followed the next year, an amp and my first band followed the year after. Many decades have passed and I'm still fired up every time I pick up my basses.

Now here's something quite different than your typical Muff-like/FuzzFace-like/ToneBender-like fuzz. Emma OKTO-NØJS. While most samples online evoke that funky and synthy stuff, I'm happy to say it dooms as well especially if paired with another dirt pedal. It's fun on its own, of course, but it shines in a company. I love what it can do when coupled with an octave fuzz and/or envelope filter. Of course it has its learning curve. Quality, fit and finish is great. It is also a looker.

Tonerider Jazz pickups... how good are they really?
Beedster replied to wateroftyne's topic in Accessories and Misc
These seem a decent balance of price and quality -
I have a friend who uses a sire but he says it eats batteries every gig and it has 2 being 18v so I don’t fancy buying 2 batteries for every gig

I've owned or played most brands and a skip load of 5'ers. Imo, only one truly stood out with a 'wow' factor on the B string and that was an MTD KZ5. Lord knows how good the full fat USA ones would be!

Not sure I’d put Davie and Charles at that level of creativity and virtuosity but the principle is the same, I agree. I think we sort of agree. I love showing off. I regularly go to classical recitals where it’s 2 hours of virtuosity. I play jazz and that’s basically continual showing off. I’ve played so long the whole point now is showing off because the basic stuff is dull. But because nobody actually comes to my gigs, im not monetising it! I actually saw the pillar that holds Chopin’s heart. Apparently he was afraid of being buried alive so when he died he had it take out and sent back to Poland.

Untrue, yet very funny.

VTypeV4 started following Replacement Speakers. The old chestnut that never quite goes away..
-
Very recently, I picked up an exceptionally cheap Ashdown 2x10 cab. It works perfectly and sounds really very nice but I want to use it with all my amps so it needs to be 4 ohms not eight. The V4 will operate happily at eight but the Ampegs, Beavis and the V6 need two or four.. I've looked at various drivers and a while back, remember modelling some Celestion Pulse (not the XL) in the very similarly sized Trace Elliot 2x10 cab with seemingly favourable results. Frustratingly, my Eminence cab modelling software doesn't like this computer. The cab itself is just over 100 litres and tuned to around 50Hz. Tonally, I'm after non-rising-rate mids so a smooth, flat-ish response and the Celestions seem to fit the bill quite well. Has anyone done similar or used different drivers and found great results?

If there's a bit of time still I may have rather more immediate interest for a P than I did at the start of the week 🫣

Great video for a great cause @Dood 👏👏👏 I'll be there on the 7th September - look forward to seeing you there. Nik

For sale is my Vanderkley MNT 112 which was bought New from Bass Direct in 2020. 600W RMS and 17kg. The cab is in immaculate condition and always stored in the Roqsolid branded Vanderkley cover. I’ve recently bought the LNT 210 4ohms version, which renders the MNT112 surplus to requirements. Considering the above, this is Sale Only, and not interested in trades. Collection only from BD11 between Bradford and Leeds.

I would go for either a HB, Sire, Yamaha or Ibanez.

Innocent question here, not judging or trying to start a fight, just curious. Why do you want a pick to sound like fingers? Is there a reason for not using fingers? I play both styles because of the tonal differences. I use a 0.88 pick and loads of bass, high mids and gain with low mids and treble cut for a really aggressive pick tone.

Definitely. Agreed. Also agree - I have many years of classically trained double bass technique and excellent intonation, but even I won't play a fretless live. Turn it through 90 degrees and all will be well... 🤣 -

JapanAxe started following Self-built Ampeg B-15 style head
-
This is a single-channel take on the venerable Ampeg B15, sitting somewhere between the Heritage model and the Ceriatone 'Aunt Peg', but without the fixed bias option. The build blog is here and I suggest any prospective purchaser should read it carefully to get an idea of: How much care went into this build, along with the quality of the components. The problems I encountered and the fact that they have all been ironed out! The specifications. This was far from being my first amp-build rodeo, and I feel that I did a quality job on it. The amp has seen a lot of use over the last 4 years as a luxury practice amp in my home studio / practice room. I built it to use, not to sell, but I now find myself with (a) too many amps, (b) not enough space, and (c) a hankering after various other shiny things. I'm looking for £950 collected or by way of mutually convenient meet-up - it's not something that I would want to entrust to a courier. I'm based in Swindon, Wiltshire, but do travel around for gigs and to see family. The price reflects the cost of the components plus a tiny fraction of the many hours that I enjoyed putting it together. I will provide documentation (circuit diagram and layout) that should assist any tech that needs to work on it in the future. Some of the folks who attended last year's Big Fat South West Bass Bash got the chance to hear this through my BF Super Twin - @Stub Mandrel, @Chienmortbb, @MichaelDean iirc. If it hasn't gone by then I intend to take it to this year's Bash, this time with a FOR SALE sign on it. The Barefaced One 10 is shown for scale (I was right out of bananas) but is NOT included in the sale!

1. I visited Franz Liszt's house in the Weimar Republic in the late 80s while I was a music student. Yes, yes, I know. He was out. Saw his Piano, though. Anyway, did you know that he totally knackered his tendons by taping wooden blocks in between his fingers in order to try and gain an even wider hand span? (Eejit!) 2. Also, is this the five minute argument, or the full half hour..?
