Wilton Felder appreciation

Wilton Felder on this too. -
Recently picked this up from Happy Jack (who is an absolute gentleman). It is a wonderful instrument; looks amazing, sounds great, build quality is exceptional. Unfortunately for me though this was my first try with a short scale bass and it does not agree with my lanky body at all. Having done a couple of gigs with it and put some decent hours in at home I know in my heart it's not going to work out for me. As I mentioned on IM to Jack, I don't think I've ever wanted to love a bass as much but known that it's just not to be. Here is a link to the recent listing with additional photos and details: Some additional information: The bass was originally fretless. A previous owner had it fretted. It's very good job, including the blacking out of the original side dots and replacement with new markers in the correct fretted positions. The bass has a set of Richter electronics in. I'd not come across these before, it's an excellent system. Controls are: 1) Volume/pan between piezo and mag pickups 2) Bass/treble with push/pull on the treble for passive bypass. With the tone controls set to flat I can't tell any difference between active and passive. There is no passive tone but the treble cut has a very similar quality. 3) Mid/mid frequency Access is through removal of the pickguard. The Richter piezo preamp is easily accessible there and features a trim pot for each individual saddle. I've set this so the overall output is a slightly higher than the mag pickup as I'd liked this mix for the center setting of the pan. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjduPeD0NyOAxWDXkEAHVyNPVAQFnoECBQQAQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.richter-ee.de%2Fpreamps2.html&usg=AOvVaw2P6r7UL8DDXNxMVEcfLDMv&opi=89978449 Full spec as per the original build is: Scale Length Short Scale 30" Number of Frets 20 Frets Body Construction Hollowbody Body Wood Alder Top Wood Eye Poplar Veneer Walnut Color Type Natural Body Binding Without Binding Body Finish Gloss Pickguard 3ply Cream Neck Wood Flamed Maple Neck Finish Matte Neck Profile Modern C Nut Width 40mm Carbon Rods No Fingerboard Wood Macassar Ebony Fingerboard Radius 14'' Headstock Type Matching Headstock (Natural) Headstock Finish Gloss Headstock Logo Silver Nut Black Pickup Combination Single Coil (SSC) Manufacturer Bassculture Pickup Finish Pickguard Color Neck Pickup Bassculture SSC 'Cream' Hardware Color Chrome Knobs Type Dome-Style Tuner Type Standard Y-Style Security Locks Without Security Locks String Type Flatwound The bass is strung E-C with what are believe are the original factory strings. There are no issues with these at all. To my fingers they feel like an E-C set of Labella DTFs. Hope that's helpful but any questions let me know. Happy to talk about trades as well as a cash sale, if I'm honest my main aim is to find this wonderful instrument a good home as it deserves to be loved and played.

And he's worked with Ozzy, Metallica, and Alice in Chains.

It wouldn't open on my phone either. I had to download it on my MacBook.

And Queens of the Stone Age, after Elton told Josh they should have a real Queen in the band 😆

Reverend FTW. Was about to say "saves me taking a bass" but then I remembered that my Triad 4 has a 10 way switch, so I guess you (and others) might be interested in that so I had better bring it. -

I came to this through the Beastie Boys -

Not really, he's got form. He once played keys with Saxon.

I will Dave, but sadly I just hurt too much after gigs now, not regular aches but actual pain, got to a point where I dread gigs because of how bad I’ll feel for a good few days after.

Even the master of singing and playing bass has problems sometimes.

The Stuart Clayton books are very good for jamiroquai material

I had a similar "flap" issue with my bass rig. When i dig in i was hearing that speaker flap sound from my bass rig. Its something i've had a while but just thought i was pushing my rig too hard. However i started using my Keeley comp at every gig meaning my bass level never increased to the amp. It pointed more towards my Sandberg VM4. I decided to lower the pick ups a touch just to see if it made a difference and low and behold the issue has now gone. I generally like a reasonably low action but not enough to get fret buzz so i'm typically 1.75 - 2mm at 12th fret depending on bass. I only experienced it when really digging in hard in the heavier rock songs. Oddly enough there are some songs i miss the distortion / flapping sound as it suited the aggressive tone. 😂 Dave

Suggestions for an inexpensive P Bass with a Jazz neck
gjones replied to Minininjarob's topic in Bass Guitars
from looking at it I think it's more of a modern radius . There was no radius quoted in the original add. -
Thanks! I always appreciate an opportunity to post those pics!

Ohh, I hadn’t thought of red strings. The ones currently on mine are black. (Not the black strings. It came with black strings which I replaced and then unreplaced.) I’ve got some black dye for the fretboard. I just need to get around to using it.

I was going to say Barefaced One10 too. I have one, and have had two in the past, I also have a TE Elf as well as other higher powered small Class D heads. I would add that in my opinion, a single BF One10 with a TE Elf, whilst capable (just) of playing with a small ensemble in a small room, is really on the limit of what you can do with it. A second cab makes a huge difference with the TE Elf, but I think this defeats the object of the OPs exercise. I do use a single BF One10 for gigs sometimes, even as "backline only" with no DI, but I use it with a higher powered head than the TE Elf, and at the moment that's a GK Legacy 800. It really works well for such a tiny setup. Rob

Hi Dave, I was using the Melvin Lee Davis Preamp Pedal direct into the virtual desk. First time I’ve properly run sans amp. I have to say, it sounded huge. Only complaint was that the bottom end of the Elite Jazz made the 15” 1000w monitors flap a little occasionally!

Yes it takes a bit of practise. Start simple and build upwards. One trick when singing is to simplify the line your playing, kinda fudge it a bit. To think I once sang lead vocal on 'Forget Me Knots' in a three piece? Can barely even play the bass line anymore...The exuberance of youth can achieve pretty much anything.
