A tricky question. Your idea of what constitutes a 'woody' sound might be totally different to that of someone else. Might be an idea to drop a link in here to give folks an idea of the type of sound you're thinking of? A lot of the 'sound' of an electric bass comes from pickup type and where they are positioned on the instrument. Woods used in the construction can play a significant part in what the bass sounds like with or without amplification. String choice is another strong contender for tone alteration, not to mention whether you play using finger-style or plectrum/pick, or whatever. Even where you choose to pluck/strike the sting can make a huge difference to the sound produced. You asked about specific frequencies to bring out the 'woody' tone in your post. Assuming that you're using an amplifier and speaker set-up, I'd suggest that a 15"or even an 18" speaker might help you get nearer to what I have in my head for 'woody' tone - I have to revisit what I wrote above and underline, that your idea of the sound might be different from mine (or anyone else's). Further to amp settings, I imagine that lots of treble won't be what you're chasing and too much bass boost could lead to a muffled rumbling. Because of this, I'd recommend that you use an amp, if yours doesn't have this, where you can boost/cut low-mids a little. If you can get together with another BC member in your area, they might have an amp or two you could play through, to see if they can help you nail that sound. You don't say how long you have been playing, so forgive me if comments above seem basic. Maybe you're a veteran of the low-end with a PhD in Acoustics? No doubt, some here will agree with my comments and others will not. The only way to find the sound you're chasing in your head, is to try a variety of amps, speakers, equalisers, etc. Look on it all as an adventure and enjoy the journey. Just a thought, but before you worry about eq, are you sure you have the gain set right, and that all of your Anagram patches are putting out the same level?

Afternoon, Can anyone offer some guidance please? I have an Ampeg SGT DI, about 3 yrs old and out of warranty. Used maybe 20 times. It was working fine until it stopped the other night at a rehearsal. All lights still work, the Aux in still works ok but i can't get any sound from the DI out (what I normally use) or the headphones out. I've tried a factory reset and checked that the software is up to date. If I tap my finger on the end of a lead plugged into the Input jack i can get the compression light to light up faintly but no where near as bright as it used to. Any ideas? I don't want to pay loads to have someone tell me it's going to cost loads to fix and I also don't want to just chuck it it the bin either so would prefer to gift it on to someone for spares/parts. This is my Ibanez SR2600 Cerulean Blue Burst, which I became interested in after seeing Dave Pegg of Fairport Convention using the 5 string version. Was that the outboard preamp Chris? Buying an outboard Sadowsky preamp would makes good sense for a lot of reasons. That bit of kit makes most basses sound better, cheap and not so cheap, so it may well stay useful if someone upgrades to a more expensive instrument. Even if the Sadowsky preamp doesn't make your cheaper bass sound good enough to satisfy, you can keep it for the next bass. Sooner or later it will be useful and money well-spent.

I agree Chris, but I do get great protection from the foamies, it's just that the top end gets cut much more than on fancy plugs so I am sacrificing on my experience of the quality of the sound rather than protection for my ears. Foamies will cut up to 38db which is more than any of the fancy ones could last time I checked.

I know what wood sounds like when I bang my head on a door frame. I wouldn't call it musical.
