  10. the issue that started this thread is now resolved, but a minor, related one remains: When playing the E string with my middle finger on the third fret, I can't really lift my finger without getting major rattling on the third fret itself. This is the case with all frets on the E string. THe A issue doesn't suffer as severely from it. My guess is that it's just a question of technique? and because the E string is such a big lump of metal? Anyways, the guy in the teaching videos doesn't seem to suffer from it xd as for @Hellzero and @JJMotown: it's fine guys, please don't fight about something so trivial
  11. I used to gig with one of these into the band’s PA. only sold mine as I stopped gigging. sounds great on bass, some superb amps and effects and you can load your own IR. glwts.
  12. Bassists have an area on stage to move about on that's roughly shoulders width. You stay in that area and looked slightly bored whilst playing. Anyone who moves out of their area, or looks remotely excited whilst playing, should have their epaulettes stripped and be excommunicated from the bass players union.
  13. I have one of these and it’s one of my favorite basses. I don’t think I’ll ever sell mine. They are very rare to find. Whoever buys, will enjoy it very much. Good luck with the sale.
  14. I accidentally ordered two sets of mother of pearl oval crown stickers for my new (to me) Ian Hill Spector. This is the spare unused set. Unavailable in UK, had to source these from a US ebay seller. Avoid the transAtlantic hassle and lob £15 my way to upgrade your dot necked Spector!

  16. I've been playing bass on and off for 45 years, yikes. Before bass, I had been mostly playing violin, and I guess what was my pizzicato technique on the violin got transplanted into my bass playing. I play free strokes, basically. Recently, I've been trying to practice rest strokes, with a view to potentially trying to adopt them more or even completely. When I play with rest strokes, my right hand fingers are almost completely straight. There's something incredibly satisfying about the motion of plucking this way, I love it, but I've got a lot to learn. One of the hardest things seems to be crossing 2 strings to play octaves. I wondered from more seasoned rest-strokers (ooer) whether you switch to free strokes for octaves? I feel like I need to curl my fingers and change my hand position to miss the string in between the octaves. Or is there a trick to make this easier?

  20. Eh, maybe one day, but only if one of the tuners currently on it die - they are a bit cheap and a bit wobbly when the string tension is taken off. They're also tiny - so if I do come to replace them, I'll need to ream out the holes anyway...

  24. It's done! I went to the Mech Engineering Workshop at work today, because I needed some help to get a hole through from the new pickup route to the cavity. Yes, they had a sufficiently long drill bit to be able to enter from the neck pocket and drill through, into the new route then onwards and into the bridge pickup route... Bridge pickup is foam suspended, so the foam will simply deform around the chunky multicore wire. After that, it was pretty much just a case of wiring it all up. Except it wasn't - because there were a few wrinkles in the plan (isn't there always?). First thing I learned is that the T-40 pickup, while splittable, doesn't give you access to all four ends of the coils - it only has three wires plus a shield coming out of it, so all you can do is series/single by shunting one coil to ground. So I had to change from a three way mini toggle to a two way. Then gotcha 2 happened - the new switch had less of a threaded section on it than the previous switch, so out comes the drill again with the forstner bit to remove a little more control cavity to make the new switch poke through the top of the guitar enough. With those little issues out of the way it was just a case of wiring it up... Quick tap test on the pickups made me suspect that the pickups were out of phase when both engaged, so I swapped the wires of easiest one (the bridge pickup). Then I tested it for real. IT WORKED! I am delighted with this mod - I've had to learn a lot of new things, and I hope to never have to route an already finished bass ever again
  25. I walked out of a Walter Trout gig in the first song because it was immediately painful. It was at The Stables in Milton Keynes and it was loud enough the back rows at Wembley. Out through double sets of doors into the bar and it was still too loud there. I have absolutely no doubt the people who stayed for the 2 hour set had permanently damaged their hearing. You did the right thing walking out.

  27. I saw BB King in a big venue once, he was playing through a tiny little amp beside him on the stage (couldn't see what it was but I'm guessing an old valve amp, 20w or something). The amp was mic'd up. No effects, just guitar, lead, amp the size of a shoebox, and his guitar tone was incredible.
