I bought some DR EXTRA-Life Black Beauties Medium Bass Strings BKB-45 from the other side of the pond for £18. I've just had a letter from from the P.O saying I owe £11.32 in customs charges which equates to around 61% if I'm not mistaken. (edited for spelling mistake) Surely this can't be right ? When you pick up your strings you'll find a sticker on it that states the customs charge and the admin fee. The admin fee maybe larger than the actual customs charge. I got stung on a tshirt recently. Did the seller list it on the package as $28.88? It's annoying on the smaller items. Most things get through & I only expect to pay on bigger items normally. I ended up paying something like £45 all-in, when the UK price (when in stock) was about £29 and the US price 'seemed' about the same including postage. Some things that you should be aware of when purchasing from outside the EU. 1. VAT and import duty is calculated on the costs of the goods [b]PLUS[/b] the cost of the shipping. 2. The exchange rate calculator used by customs is not the same as the one you looked up on the internet on the day you bought the goods. 3. If you are eligible to pay VAT and or duty then then the delivery company in the UK will charge you a handling fee for paying these up front for you. This will be somewhere between £8 and £15 depending on the carrier and the customs charges. If you want to avoid paying VAT on imports from outside the EU you need to make sure the combined price with postage is at least £1 below the VAT threshold (currently £18).
