New Year's Bass Resolutions 2008

This is an idea which I've stolen from Ultimate Guitar. Post up your bass New Year's Resolution, and next year we'll see how well we've done.

Mine are:
- No more bass buying
- Learn how to count properly, so I can analyse and breakdown any piece of music

Find a band that

1) Likes the same music as me and
2) Can play well
3) Are (roughly) the same age as me or failing that
4) can appreciate that it is possible to have a family and job but still be willing and able to put plenty of time and effort into a band
5) Can all drive
6) Can all pay their way
7) Have all members (apart from bassist of course)

Take full advantage of my endorsement and buy another 'custom order' Spector at a knock down price!

Get back to basics and buy 2 nice Jap reissue Precision basses.... one for flatwounds, one for roundwounds... :)

I'm hoping that with my mortgage paid by April (hopefully), with the spare swag I'd like to pick up a Lakland DJ5, a Geddy Lee signature, Bongo 5HH. I'd like to cobble together a Spector/Thunderbird from parts.

While I doubt I'd throw (much) money at my amp setup - I can see myself buying something small for home use and keep my main amp in my garage so I can load/unload easier.

Totally unmusical, I see us having a couple of holidays next year too.

These are probably more general music plans than specifically bassy:

Start/finish my Project Jazz - I've had all the parts for over a year. :)

De-fret my Peavey 5 - I don't play it, don't want to sell it so making it a lined (& therefore playable by me) fretless should help justify its existence.

Build headless twin-neck fretted 4/fretless 5 prog nightmare bass.

Set up workshop in basement in order to do all of the above.

Flog my owned-since-new (1992) , as-new, never-gigged & never-going-to-be-gigged-by-me Ibanez SR800 fretless (unlined!) - it deserves better!

Use fewer hyphens.

Set up recording studio/permanent rehearsal space in other half of basement.

Demo two songs which are written but not recorded - one of which is already over 2 years old.

Record two albums with band - the "back catalogue" material & the as-yet only half-written Concept Album. And try & find a label gullible enough to release them.

Start to collate mass of useless info about JapCrap basses & guitars for future website (Rickenbugger.com ) or book which no-one will ever, ever publish.

Play more gigs outside the UK.

Jon.

hmmmmm .. probably the same as last year, something along the lines of:

1. Get a maple fingerboard 70's P-Bass (ideally a bit war torn and with Jazz neck and additional J pup)
2. Get a new Yamaha Attitude (MK3?)
3. Get some kind of boutique bass.
4. Get new bass rig (mine is of course totally fine but I want a new one!)
5. STOP BUYING STUFF!!!!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!!
6. Actually complete some home recordings rather than just constantly recording odd little ideas. FINISH THEM!
7. Join a new band to run alongside existing.
8. Practice with direction rather than just noodling about.
9. Work on some solo live looping stuff.
10. Get e-drum kit and learn drums more.
11. Spend less time on the internet and more time actually playing!!!

peace
