Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting

If others can post Italian stuff, it's only fair that I can too.

Look at the huge clunky tuners on this thing. It looks sorta funky and cool to me somehow though.
Hi Ho

Jon any idea as to what a 70's ElMaya telecaster bass is worth in good nick????

Cheers
Hard to be sure, I think I'd hope for summat around the £200 mark. If it was mine I'd stick it on Ebay at 99p no reserve & let it find its own level.

Spinynorman - inclined to agree, considering it's a cheap knockoff of the Kramer Duke & they sometimes only go for a ton or so more.

Triumph bass. "MIJ Gibson" it says. Copy it is. Interesting looking beast though.

Edit: The seller is also selling some "retro" jackets. That look like they would go quite well with the bass.

If you're gonna go that route - lots of very detailed, clear pics, an accurate & honest description - and a title stuffed with keywords to get the hits.

And don't forget, there are no certainties - it could still sell for three quid to an 'orrible c*** like me...

Jon you would probably get two of them and your fuel costs covered for that amount :)

Your not an orrid C**t at all :)
Heres something for a Jolly nice chap that appreciates JapCrap,I paid far toooooooo Much but I liked it.....and at long last it arrived...I know what it is and I think it was possibly made in the same factory as early Teiscos...
The bridge is its only let down so its out with that and in with one fron a Fender Jaguar as the spacings are the same....
You should see the original sparkly case case possibly designed by Mary Quant!! :)

Currently at £50. How much is the case worth? I think you get a lot for very little cash with Columbus stuff, I love mine.

Looks very much like Jolana Rubin Bas - http://www.jolana.cz/rubin-bass/ with messed neck (probably taken from another Jolana and toyed with saw).
These were made in Czechoslovakia and they don't have very good reputation here. It's basically because there are very little of them left in playable condition.
I would never give more then 10 pounds for this crap...

This is from the US. I only post it here to say that I've never heard of a "Global" bass before. I presume that it's a local label job, like Antoria or Lincoln in the UK.

I've got one of those :)

It's a Jolana Kolorbas, which is virtually identical to the Rubin bar the Fender-esque headstock and the tailpiece (if I remember correctly). The tuners are crap and you'll only coax a retro 60's type thump out of the thing, but other than that it's fine. I've seen the bass player with Holly Golightly using one of these - unsurprisingly it was a 60's inspired band and he'd changed the tuners for Gotohs. :)

Someone's changed the headstock shape slightly on that one, added a string tree, stripped the paint and got busy with black paint on the pole pieces and end pin section of the tailpeice. Other than that it's the same as mine (actually mine's got white rectangular heads to the tuners and the original knobs, including the funky selector switch). We're both missing the transparent pickguard though.

I'd guessed the body on these things were hardboard, ala Danelectro, so it's good to know they're wood of some description. I was going to repaint mine but wasn't sure how Nitromors would affect hardboard.

I paid £100 for mine (including the shipping from Germany).

You wouldn't say that if I blagged your El Maya for a tenner! :)

Now, that green thing's very interesting, looks in lovely nick too. You might well be right about Teisco/Kawai as a manufacturer, certainly looks related in a lot of ways. Never seen one of these before, so what exactly is it then?

Ross - like you say, Global is one of millions of rebrands - most of the names on JapCrap are. This one is, I'd say Korean rather than MIJ, I'm basing that on the plain, narrow neckplate & the slightly odd-shaped truss rod cover. These are very Hondo-esque, as is the finish, which unashamedly displays its edge laminations - the Japanese at least tried to hide the plywood! I'd bet you'd find plastic buttons rather than metal on the tuners, too.

For what it's worth I think that Columbus J posted earlier is Korean too. Still looks nice, though

The one I bought is allegedley one of the 2 mentioned in the text I am told but I dont know if its 100% genuine.
I am negotiating the sale on the other one left but the price is steep.
The seller tells me that Paul George designed the one I have in 1964/5 and that it was a 1 off ???? No proof of it though,he tells me he is related to the Georges of Hollywood.
Im currently cleaning her up and getting it ready for putting in a Mustang bridge(bought one last night and a trem arm) as this girl suffers the same as Jaguars, had a mess with it yesterday and all the switching is good as are all pickups, gonna pick up a set of flats today and see how it sounds after a decent set up...
I must add a picture of the case later....ITs OH SO GLAM.....
Please do not veiw pics of case without a sick bag at the ready :)

I've been watching that, but I think he's started it too high. I seem to remember Jon's comment on the last one that came up was "I'll wait for one to come up in a car boot sale for a fiver, they always do." Which doesn't stop the unshakable conviction of current owners that they're worth £200.

Ibanez Jazz. Very low starting price. Low enough such that the current price will be meaningless in the long run I would think. Even with the weirdo half-baked repairs.

You mean the HONDO? Tokai, indeed. And people wonder why you get cynical. :) :)

Very nice bass apart from the w@nky droopy pointy 80s headstock (I was in the 80s & the ubiquity of these things has left me with a spontaneous gag reaction) but this is a Samick, made in Korea, like 90% of Hondos. That round brown & white sticker with the writing is a Samick factory inspection sticker.

There's actually a foolproof way of spotting & recognising Made In Japan instruments, and I really should do more to go out of my way to publicise & promote it.

They say "Made In Japan" on them.

J.
