Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting

I suppose it must be because the Westbury brand had a phase a few years ago of selling for silly money - usually the guitars, but I have seen a Track 2 go for over £200. Standard guitar can still top that if you're lucky & the more rare Westy Deluxe & Customs will get £300+ - but they are scarce & genuinely collectable.

Basses always get less money though - the Track IV (set neck, 2x P pups) is probably less common than any of the guitars, but a year or so ago there was one re-listed about 5 times, until the seller presumably gave up. Think it was about £200.

Shame about the fret-rape on the Columbus, these can be quite decent. This one is MIJ, should say so on the neckplate.

I like Columbus stuff as well. The bass I got for £70 off ebay was the same as that with frets. After stripping it all down, refilling the body ready for spraying (need warmer weather) and re shaping the neck it's coming along nicelyand is a surprisingly nice bass. With new Pickups/Bridge mods it should be the business.

Rarity value, maybe. But I don't personally think this is worth £400.
TBF, whether true or not, the Bill Bailey bit is the best ebay story I've in a while. Playing both parts of "Peaches" is one of the few uses I could find for a bass/guitar twin neck.

It would probably fetch that in slightly better/more original condition - and possibly with a more marketable brand than CMI. This is a Matsumoku, not a Fujigen as he implies - check the Steel Adjustable Neck plates & headstock/trc shapes.

I'd be a whole lot more interested in this sort of thing if they'd done twin bass necks - can't imagine anything more pointless than a bass/guitar like this. Unless you're playing Peaches...

Check out BORIS/boris
The neck is a 3 piece one with the different wood down the centre.
it has come away slightly about 6" down from the nut at the back. It dosent interfere with the playing of it, and i think if it was filled with strong wood filler it would be fine and would not go any worse.
You'd think. :)

What a muckin fuppet. :)

Italian-made Melody, that P. These have a 3-piece laminated neck - which is presumably where the split's occurred. Theoretically it might be possible to slacken the truss rod & then glue/clamp it, if it al still lines up properly.

Oli - interesting you mention BORIS/boris, came across them on the soundtrack of a film called Elements Of Control a few weeks ago - didn't think too much of the film, but did decide I should listen to more Japanese bands.
Has a "sustain bar" fitted at the rear of the bridge? Has a what? :)

What he means is that the cheapsh!t bridge fitted to these was bending under string tension (as they all seem to) so someone jammed a bit of steel rod across the back to hold it straight!

Bodged bridge aside, it does look tidy, as far as one can tell - but on recent form it wouldn't sell even if it was £100 cheaper.

J.
Actually it's a fairly common problem with the 3-point bridge, even Gibson ones, that the ball-end silks go over the saddles and mute the string. So a wily entrepreneur in the US makes a small living selling metal spacer bars which solve the problem. I had one on my EB3.

EDIT: Just noticed he's using strings with no silks, so it probably makes bugger all difference, or, as you suggest, is holding the bridge together.

Whatever else these are sold for, it's holding the bridge together, no question. This was mine when I got it - I've seen a lot of these & this is quite typical:

Obviously, I had to replace it! The spacer bar idea does look like a workable fix if the bridge is deformed but not actually cracked, like mine. Definitely a fair bit cheaper than a new replacement 3-point bridge.

Not sure it would fix that - the bar is just held against the back of the bridge by the pull of the strings.

Wouldn't help one as far-gone as mine was, but if a bridge could be straightened, the bar would take & distribute the string tension & stop it happening again. I'm convinced that's why there's one one on this Westy.

Quick heads-up for a nice-looking Matsumoku-built Kimbara Jazz copy, rosewood board/pearl blocks, running out at 8.30 pm tonight.

Currently £87 and hasn't had much attention, had my eye on this but unforseen circumstances mean I'm out! :) Could well be a bargain, & Kimbara Jazzers already have the BC Seal Of Approval.

Was tempted to that myself too. It has the normal standard Jazz pickup routing, whereas mine hasn't - will be a cracking bass, with some decent pickups dropped in it.

Vox.

While I'm sure I'll learn more about what I like with further experience, I'm not sure a bass with a single precision pickup that close to the bridge would be for me.

Solid timber body, think it's a 1-piece neck, pup is very probably a DiMarzio Model P. No brand on the head but there's a "ghost" where it's been removed - can't work out what it was but never mind - if I was selling this I'd want more than £150 if it plays as good as it looks.

Could do with a little bit of elbow-grease (and the G tuner screw tightening!) and a couple of "proper" knobs but this looks like a lot of P for £150 to me.

Another expensive Ibanez Artist.

The shop selling one for £900, then £800 still has no luck.

I wonder if the new seller (top link) has been influenced (misguided) by the previous seller (bottom link).

Definitely - that's the Ebay Effect for you. :) You can also see the effect of this deluded twonk & his hilariously overpriced Westone Thunder 1 in the various £200+ Westy Thunders that have suddenly appeared since he listed it. The fact that someone was evidently prepared to pay over £400 for what's previously always been a £150ish bass ain't going to help reality/sanity reassert itself, either.

Brass has gone up a lot, so you could sell the knobs.

Asking prices for Westones seem to have gone up a lot. I would have thought £100 for this Concord II bass: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Westone-Concord-II-b...=item43a489ea30

Over time we'll see what has happened to selling prices. If anything.
