Gazz seems...upset

I can understand not liking a guitar tone. (Taste is subjective, and all that.)

 

I realise some people feel like they need to share this dislike in a short comment.

 

Then there is Gazz.

 

I do not know Gazz personally, but he felt the need to respond to a little 45-second video at some length:

 

He goes on...dare I say my atrocious tone seems to have offended him quite personally...

Apparently, I'm doing absolutely everything wrong..."but what [does he] know??", he humbly ventures...

 

Ah, wait, there it is:

 

Did Gazz actually want to offer his useful (read: unsolicited) advice, or did he just want an opening to brag about his collection of amps? 

 

(And isn't it funny how some people think that they can foghorn the most patronising screed at you, but as long as they say "don't take it as an insult," everything's A-OK?)

Did he not explain what a time amp is? If it's a device for making your day longer, I might be interested in one but I'd need to check in with Gazz to see if I should get one with valves and what modulation goes best with it.

Yeah, I was quite baffled by that one - I'm guessing there's a whole thread to be had arguing whether they work best with analogue or digital clocks...

Does he mean "use a time amp! = Essential!" or "use a time amp != Essential!" as the two have opposite meanings[1] and you need to be sure the space is in the right place, which, given his failure to write "your" instead of "you're", seems only about 50% likely.

 

And are time amps going to succeed tonewoods as the next big debating point? Can you get timewoods?

His comments have all the hallmarks of someone desperately trying to sound like they know something but are actually giving away the obvious fact they know precisely nothing! 

 

But... go sort out your tone, its your tone making your tone sound bad!

Yeah, it's that blasted "beginners tone", if only I hadn't used my boutique Beginner's Tone pedal. Would have made my "time amp" sound so much better...

I genuinely feel a bit sorry for these kind of people. They're desperate to show off their "knowledge" and be seen as some kind of authority, but he's just shouting into a void. If you liked your tone and amp, effects choices then it's perfect. Because it's artistic expression, not precision engineering.

I think you can get too hung up on this sort of thing.

 

If you put stuff up on social media you are going to encounter people who get their kicks from trolling.

 

I see it all the time on the most innocuous clips on Instagram, people obviously just trying to upset other people for the hell of it.

 

What they are after is attention either from the original poster or other commenters, the more negative the better, as far as they are concerned being noticed is a win for them.

 

The best way to deal with it is just to ignore them. Don't give them any indication that you've even seen it.

 

Deny them the attention they are seeking and leave them thinking that they're wasting their time trying to engage with you and they'll move on.

Before the days the internet really got going I received an email reveiw from a 'producer' who had been at one of our gigs.

 

I'm sure he was trying to be helpful. I read it several times before replying -

 

"Thanks for your email."

 

In hindsight I think that was 4 words too many.

You're absolutely right, and this is far from the only trolling I've received - it's certainly not the nastiest, by any stretch! I can't deny this sort of thing still rattles me a bit, but generally I try to ignore it.

 

This one just stood out because the more I thought about it, the more ridiculous it seemed: I don't know if somebody else had really p!55ed on his chips that day, but it must have taken him longer to type all that than he would have spent watching the video. (Well, that, and I still can't work out WTF he means by a "time amp"...)

Everyone needs a hobby.

 

This is Gazz's hobby.

 

He would like to be good at music, however it is much easier to make himself feel like he knows a lot by inserting his opinion where it isn't needed whilst trying to sound like an authority on the subject.

 

Pity him. He will never be much good at anything as it is far more important to him that he feels like he is an expert.
