fretmeister Posted July 12 Posted July 12 Sounds…. Just like a Stingray. For a lot lot lot lot lot less money. Aguilar pickup, OBP-2, 18volts. nice. 23 Quote
Dood Posted July 12 Posted July 12 When @fretmeister unleashes his new god-like bass tones, the congregation will bow down ready to give up their souls. In anticipation, waiting for the bass to drop, the words echo across the room.... "Let us PRay!" And it was good. 1 10 Quote
fretmeister Posted July 13 Author Posted July 13 Ye gods the boost available on the preamp is mad! Quote
HeadlessBassist Posted July 13 Posted July 13 I don't know what it should be called, but I like it. I like it a lot. Quote
fretmeister Posted July 13 Author Posted July 13 Currently got Dunlop flats on it, but I might fancy some rounds. Quote
HeadlessBassist Posted July 14 Posted July 14 (edited) So did you put this together yourself, Fretmeister? Or did it come to you like this? I assume it's based on a Squier or MIM Precision or something like that? Edited July 14 by HeadlessBassist Quote

I assume it's based on a Squier or MIM Precision or something like that? It was a bitsa P bass that I got the parts for and delegated the difficult bits to my local tech. Fender mex jazz neck, a paulownia unbranded body from the classifieds, and so on. Then I realised whenever I wanted a P sound I always picked up one of my 2 shortie Ps, (on flats, the other rounds). I don’t have a stingray so modifying this seemed to be the best approach. I got the Aguilar MM pickup in the classifieds, the pickguard from eBay and the preamp was new. The MM was carefully placed to match the position on a Classic ray, and the routs for the P pickup hidden under the guard are perfect for the two 9v batteries. Next step is to get a radiused bit of wood or plastic to sit on top of the pickup as a finger ramp. I experimented with just raising the pickup more, but it’s too powerful when it’s very close to the strings so a little ramp will do the trick. I might see if I can find someone with a 3D printer for that. Probably be the easiest approach. 41 minutes ago, Geek99 said: Lego brick pot? That’s what happens when a stray bit of Lego is in your gig bag and the luthier thinks he’s funny! 1 Quote
HeadlessBassist Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I'd be interested to hear some sound samples. The body you sourced looks really nicely finished, too. I really like open pore stained Fender-shaped bodies. Quote
fretmeister Posted July 14 Author Posted July 14 The body was already finished by the previous owner. It's got a nice feel to it. I could probably do a play-a-long or two with it. I haven't done one for a while. It's got flats at the moment so I could do that, and then another with some rounds when my new ones arrive. Quote

fretmeister Posted July 14 Author Posted July 14 Any particular genre? I'm not saying you'll get it - it's more about me knowing how disappointed you'll be with my music taste! Quote

Anything you like that shows off the sound of the bass. Edited July 14 by HeadlessBassist Quote

Danuman Posted July 14 Posted July 14 This is absolutely brilliant. I bought a secondhand five-string P - determined to do exactly this - but it turned out to be a 35-inch scale and now I’ve lost my bottle a little bit… The combination makes so much sense to me. Well done! Quote

MartinB Posted July 14 Posted July 14 Rays and skates can be hard to tell apart. Mine's not a StingRay - it's a CheapSkate! 😁 Squier Sonic Precision Warman MM4 pickup Retrovibe Stinger pre-amp Custom scratchplate by earlpilanz (because I hacked out the pickup cavity by hand and it's not pretty 🙈) 3 3 Quote

Looks just like my cup of tea. Quote

It came from ebay seller musicinternational and was listed as "4 String Electric J Bass or P Bass Bridge for Jazz/Precision Bass Guitar", but I haven't seen another one like it since. 3 Quote

The Dunlops flats I have on it are just a bit dark. I have some EB Group flats (Joe Dart’s favourite) so I’ll try them too. I really need to get a quick change / slot load bridge for this bass. 1 Quote
