What to buy a bass player for his 18th

Thanks for taking the time to reply and for the ideas.

I'm definitely going to look at a nice strap, some locks, a tuner and a pedal.

I'm pondering if I just get him involved so he can get exactly what he wants rather than me trying to second guess.

I like the idea of him having a strap that he'll have for a few years.

He's got his bass and amp and says he's happy with them for now, so I'm pondering what I could get him for his birthday.

Gift vouchers for a music shop? My Christmas pressie list often has Andertons vouchers on it.

If you could get it embossed or printed with his initials and the date of his 18th, that’d make it very personal and memorable.

(Trying not to repeat other,  worthy suggestions)

Strings

A good, professional set-up.

Hi, rather late replying, but when you say "a good professional setup", it sounds interesting.  We're based in North Surrey - any recommendations on someone who could help.

I've had a Google but as I know nothing about this I'm not sure what/who to look for so any advice would be great.

Thanks

I was referring to getting the bass itself set up by a reputable guitar/bass technician or a luthier.

Some music shops may offer this as a service,  but it's worth Googling around to find one with a good reputation.

A good set-up  (neck relief, action, intonation) can make a world of difference to an instrument.

No one should be fighting to play their bass

Experiencing the benefits also helps players to learn what they like and may also motivate them to learn to perform  their own adjustments, a useful skill for bassists/guitarists.

I had a setup on an Epiphone Casino Coupé that had some fret issues. I had the guy at Guitar Guitar in Epsom do the work and I was very pleased with the results. Might not be the same bloke now, but they have a reputation to uphold and I'd imagine they don't employ monkeys.

The LT25 amp has a built in tuner and if it is anything like he guitar version of the amp, it will be pretty good, so a tuner might be moot. A hard case or really good gigbag would be a good choice, as well as a comfortable strap.

The Bass Book by Tony Bacon.

And just to repeat what others have said...

A really good strap and straplocks - I like a Mono Betty strap but a nice leather one with his name and birthday date embossed (as someone above mentioned) would be a great pressie.

A decent case (Hiscox) or bag (Mono/Protec Contego).

A good setup (Sort of a service & MOT for his Bass) - Google "Luthier Surrey".

A couple of sets of his preferred strings (or a set of Adagio flatwounds - a cheap intro to flatwound strings).

A Multi effects pedal - the Zoom B3 is really well regarded.

A voucher for your local music shop so he can decide.

A good few years of lifts to and from gigs and rehearsals.

A set of decent headphones (for yourself 😀)
