Bonkers new Janek Gwizdala single on YT

Brilliant! After Janek's last album which was based around pedal noises, I'm loving the return to the classic trio format. And he has such a lyrical voice when he solos. I got his Giant Steps book and in it he talks about all the Pat Metheny solos he transcribed and how much of an influence he was on his playing. I've always thought of Gwizdala as the Metheny of the bass.

I have total admiration for the capabilities and creative vision of the musicians involved - and the fact that they are making a living doing what they love - but that was a tough listen (and I like modern jazz).

… maybe the Nottingham gig, just a pain to get to so we’ll see. I saw the last trio in Manchester and that was really very good indeed 👍🏼

I had a ticket for Mcr, but couldn’t go.

 

I have my ticket for Nottingham, and for the masterclass beforehand

For me, that was like a big helping of musical spaghetti - delicious for the first few minutes, then starts to tire.

However, massive respects to these guys and their extreme talents - mind boggling levels of skill.

I must admit…. sometimes with jazz…. I feel like I’m a bit thick and don’t get it, like I’m not smart enough to understand? Similarly like reading poetry and feeling a bit stupid when you don’t understand it?

At least he didn't try to sing out of tune scat vocals along to his bassline!

Each to their own and erm... all that jazz...but I lasted for around 40 seconds.  As with jazz in general it's just self indulgent musical circle jerking...IMO of course.

See you there. I love this. It reminds of Tigran Hamasyan or Animals as Leaders. I know Janek is a fan of the latter.
