It makes work pretty painful the next day. We used to do 6-9 on a Sunday which was great until one guitarist moved to Newquay (travelling up in the week to work a few days in the office) and then suddenly it obviously doesn't work that well. Had to switch to midweek and then instead of doing 3 hour weekly practices, we're doing 4 hours every two weeks. It's all a bit frustrating. It really stops new songs being fresh for next practice if it's two weeks away. I think maybe we need to instigate some sort of online practice too on the non-physical meetup weeks. I've heard good things about Jamkazam. 3 hours is the point where creativity and concentration die... 2 Quote

We make a day of it and bring sandwiches, flasks of coffee, cream cakes of course and take a longish break halfway thru. It allows us to run thru our full repertoire to keep things sharp for any possible eventuality. TBH we generally get thru the songs and finish up around 5-ish but it makes rehearsals a much more relaxed affair if not rushing thru songs etc. Dave 2 Quote

bigthumb Posted June 12 Posted June 12 My run of bad luck with basses continues. My recently acquired Sandberg California wasn't going to play ball. It was fine a week or so ago when I gave it a good testing at home upon arrival, very happy indeed. Put it back in its gig bag until tonights practice. I was really looking forward to properly using this bass with the band and planing to use it at Saturdays gig but it was not to be. The input socket was not going to accept any lead I tried so something is obviously broken and a new socket is probably needed. So I had to drive back home and get a replacement bass, my old Gibson Ripper. Rehearsal going well until I had sudden overwhelming pain in my knackered right foot which left me hopping about and swearing like a drunken trooper! I can only imagine how funny this is going to look should these pain spasms return whilst gigging this coming Saturday! 3 Quote
12stringbassist Posted June 13 Posted June 13 (edited) We auditioned our new guitarist on the 2nd (playing 4 songs). Got another 6 off at the next jam night on the 9th. Rehearsed two sets worth of songs last night. Yes, we are having to go for some 'quick wins', but we are out again in July. This is one of them. Edited June 13 by 12stringbassist 6 Quote

tauzero Posted June 13 Posted June 13 Our drummer was ill so she couldn't make it, but the keyboard/singer and I went ahead. Went over most of the existing songs and I realised I should have done more practicing while we've not been rehearsing, and also did a couple of run-throughs of two new songs, one of which he'd written years ago and the other that he'd just written. Both went pretty well, which was nice. 3 Quote
Si600 Posted June 13 Posted June 13 Peaches is coming along surprisingly well. It's still a sod with the timing but I'm currently impressed with how well I'm learning it. 2 Quote

Dave Sorry yes, Stranglers. I'd like to do the Presidents of the USA one because I've never heard anyone cover that, but alas it's not that one. 1 Quote

I used to play that as my sound check with the punk band every now and again. Dave Quote

Dave We got as far as getting it almost gig ready, but the singer just couldn't get his head round the timing of the lyrics. I generally use it when soundchecking the bass though, so it gets everyone's attention......😎😁🤘 1 Quote
Si600 Posted June 13 Posted June 13 It's a total scrotum singing it and playing it because there's no obvious rhythm to the text. I am slowly getting there though, but I may have to rely on a Music Stand when we do it... 3 Quote

All the best with it and i'm sure you'll get to a point where it just "clicks". Dave 1 Quote
Stub Mandrel Posted Tuesday at 21:13 Posted Tuesday at 21:13 Went well. We only played through the first set, then did some troubleshooting... usual stuff, an established band has its own arrangements. Quite how they fitted in an extra two beats to each chorus of Milk and Alcohol eludes and confuses me... Knowing I'm up to speed on the second set is a confidence boost as I start gigging with them in July. Originals tomorrow night... keeping four bands' worth of songs in your head is good brain training! 5 Quote
EssexBuccaneer Posted Tuesday at 22:37 Posted Tuesday at 22:37 We had a try out of Electric Six ‘Gay Bar’ tonight - nailed first time as you’d expect from such a simple ditty. We’re planning on putting it in as a cheeky little encore on Saturday. 5 Quote

Marvin Posted Wednesday at 22:12 Posted Wednesday at 22:12 (edited) Singer wanted to rest her voice so we went through the set for Friday without her...turned out to be one our best/tightest practices 😎 Edited Wednesday at 22:12 by Marvin 2 1 1 Quote
Stub Mandrel Posted Wednesday at 22:16 Posted Wednesday at 22:16 Originals band up to 9 songs now, plus we added a lead guitarist tonight. First gig booked. Finished by jamming a few songs including Sweet Transvestite 😁 3 Quote
Lozz196 Posted 22 hours ago Posted 22 hours ago Just got in from a rehearsal with the classic rock band. For some reason my fretting fingers just wouldn’t work on some songs this evening, no idea why as other more complex passages were fine. Still a great time though, and as not a gigging band I’ll not waste any sleep over it. Quote
Franticsmurf Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago Rehearsed last night with a band in which I'm depping as bassist on Saturday. I always wonder what tunes will be in the set following the assurance that 'it's all standard pub rock stuff'. In this case it was 'all standard rock stuff' - apart from 'YMCA', 'Living Next Door to Alice' and 'My Girl'. And having spent extra time on YMCA to get the disco octave thing going, it turns out they play it as straight rock. But it was a good and productive evening, no messing but not taken too seriously either. We rehearsed in the director's suite of the local rugby/cricket club and I was stood in the panoramic west facing window as the sun went down. So most of the evening was spent with little beads of sweat trickling down my back. I'll be using my Sterling 34HH and, for the first time in ages, backline consisting of 2x TE 1x10 cabs and a Peavey Minimax 600, bypassing the front end in favour of an Ampeg SCR DI. 1 Quote
Woodinblack Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago Rehursing with the metal group in a south facing building that is all glass down one side, I am glad I brought a fan, it didn't do much but it did something! The music went well, but the heat wasn't that much fun! 1 Quote

There was a death metal band in a nearby room, and they finished about the same time as us. They walked out surrounded by a thick mist... I won't mention the delicate aroma of well broiled death metalllers... 3 Quote
