We all haven't been 20 somethings for a while now and don't want to start at 7 to finish at 11. It makes work pretty painful the next day. We used to do 6-9 on a Sunday which was great until one guitarist moved to Newquay (travelling up in the week to work a few days in the office) and then suddenly it obviously doesn't work that well. Had to switch to midweek and then instead of doing 3 hour weekly practices, we're doing 4 hours every two weeks. It's all a bit frustrating. It really stops new songs being fresh for next practice if it's two weeks away. I think maybe we need to instigate some sort of online practice too on the non-physical meetup weeks. I've heard good things about Jamkazam. 3 hours is the point where creativity and concentration die... 2 Quote

We make a day of it and bring sandwiches, flasks of coffee, cream cakes of course and take a longish break halfway thru. It allows us to run thru our full repertoire to keep things sharp for any possible eventuality. TBH we generally get thru the songs and finish up around 5-ish but it makes rehearsals a much more relaxed affair if not rushing thru songs etc. Dave 2 Quote

bigthumb Posted 22 hours ago Posted 22 hours ago My run of bad luck with basses continues. My recently acquired Sandberg California wasn't going to play ball. It was fine a week or so ago when I gave it a good testing at home upon arrival, very happy indeed. Put it back in its gig bag until tonights practice. I was really looking forward to properly using this bass with the band and planing to use it at Saturdays gig but it was not to be. The input socket was not going to accept any lead I tried so something is obviously broken and a new socket is probably needed. So I had to drive back home and get a replacement bass, my old Gibson Ripper. Rehearsal going well until I had sudden overwhelming pain in my knackered right foot which left me hopping about and swearing like a drunken trooper! I can only imagine how funny this is going to look should these pain spasms return whilst gigging this coming Saturday! 3 Quote
12stringbassist Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago (edited) We auditioned our new guitarist on the 2nd (playing 4 songs). Got another 6 off at the next jam night on the 9th. Rehearsed two sets worth of songs last night. Yes, we are having to go for some 'quick wins', but we are out again in July. This is one of them. Edited 9 hours ago by 12stringbassist 5 Quote

tauzero Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago Our drummer was ill so she couldn't make it, but the keyboard/singer and I went ahead. Went over most of the existing songs and I realised I should have done more practicing while we've not been rehearsing, and also did a couple of run-throughs of two new songs, one of which he'd written years ago and the other that he'd just written. Both went pretty well, which was nice. 2 Quote
Si600 Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Peaches is coming along surprisingly well. It's still a sod with the timing but I'm currently impressed with how well I'm learning it. 2 Quote

Dave Sorry yes, Stranglers. I'd like to do the Presidents of the USA one because I've never heard anyone cover that, but alas it's not that one. 1 Quote

I used to play that as my sound check with the punk band every now and again. Dave Quote

Dave We got as far as getting it almost gig ready, but the singer just couldn't get his head round the timing of the lyrics. I generally use it when soundchecking the bass though, so it gets everyone's attention......😎😁🤘 1 Quote
Si600 Posted 24 minutes ago Posted 24 minutes ago It's a total scrotum singing it and playing it because there's no obvious rhythm to the text. I am slowly getting there though, but I may have to rely on a Music Stand when we do it... 2 Quote

All the best with it and i'm sure you'll get to a point where it just "clicks". Dave Quote
