I used to play this in a BowieĀ tribute (well, you just would), most enjoyable but I would never have guessed that was the original tone.Ā

I have played this live quite a few times (including in a Bowie tribute) and always went for the brightest tone. I’ve invariablyĀ done it fingerstyle though, never thought to use a plectrum.

Fretless with a pick and octave?

No, I believe it’s a keyboard bass in the verses doubled, and it’s a fretted bass as you can hear the fret buzz when he picks harder in the ā€œaaahā€ crescendos.Ā
Carmine is a much under-regarded bass player. His work on Let’s Dance was fantastic. His credit list has a lot more on it than I’d have thought as he’s not one of those ā€œnamesā€ that immediately springs to mind.

I’d like to have a black ESP (I think) PJ with gold hardware like he played on the serious moonlight tour :)

He was with Joe Bonamassa for quite a while IIRC. Loved his work with Bowie. DB certainly had some great bass players in his time.

This has been a fixture in my band's set for a while and always goes down well. I use an OC-2 for the verses. It doesn'tĀ sound quite like the original but it's close enough.Ā

Fun song to play, and some nice chords for the guitarists too.Ā
