A pretty poor example of releasing new models. Press photos/renders looking totally different to actual models they release. Just so weird and careless.

They were in the shops before the website got updated.  I heard about them on Lobster's discord server.

Just blame Gibson :)

For the better though as far as I am concerned.

Both in terms of the colors being more subtle/mellow pastel color like, the yellow one looks awesome in this video, probably even my favorite out of these finishes, which wasn't the case when judging from the pictures, and also in terms of the bridge pickup not being quite as far back in reality.

I agree though that it is unfortunate and seems really strange and unprofessional.

At the other price end!!!!!!! Anyone heard about this boutique SS 30.75" by  Lieber Clarke Spellbinder...from the 80's?...they have a used on BassDirect

https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Lieber_Clarke_Spellbinder.html

I'm on the hut for a Carbon fiber SS (the Spellbinders age puts me off)

My Modulus neck was awesome but tooo long...the Status Streamline was very wide/flat

Any suggestions...thx

I just took delivery of the new short scale headless from Bootlegger guitars

it’s a fun little bass to play and sounds good!

here’s a link to a review I posted at talk bass.

This baby is really ticking a lot of boxes for me: I like headless, I love green, I want a light & ergonomic body shape, and I've been considering a short scale. If you don't mind me asking, how was the ordering process from California, with the shipping costs etc.?

Just ordered mine, will be here tomorrow!!

I have been waiting years for Epiphone to re-issue the Newporter.

I owned one in 1969 and traded in for a Gibson EB3 which I still own.

Did you get it, do you like it, can we hear it ?

😉

Yep and I just saw an Epiphone press release about the Newport and El Capitaine introduction. It goes on about Epiphone having been at the forefront of innovation for 150 years, blah, blah….. now releasing new models the Newport and El Capitaine J200 basses. Innovation seems to mean re-releasing a model from the 1960s! Perhaps they meant the El Capitaine but a bass version of an existing jumbo acoustic (copy) doesn’t seem that innovative either.

Anyway the Newport looks fun and if the neck wasn’t so wide I might be interested. Good to have another affordable short scale on the market anyway.

Yup arrived on time curtesy of Guitarguitar ,great service.

Very good quality of finish for such a reasonable price point. MIC great neck finish, no sharp frets, lovely gloss finish just like the Gibson necks does not appear to be sticky at all.

I could swear that the fretboard was rosewood but the spec states otherwise. No neck dive, a well balanced bass on strap or knee.

Tuners seem fine and the tailpiece and two bolt bridge offer more than enough intonation adjustment.

I don't feel the need to up grade the arrangement. I may possibly reverse the bridge to improve access to the intonation screwheads.

Pickups sound fantastic. Neck PU has that familiar and faithful EBO timbre, bold, woody, deep forceful drive ( think of Felix Pappalardi in Mountain) .

The TB Pro is positioned to offer both an EB3 honk ( think of Free's Mr Big) but also a driving Thunderbird vibe ( think of the Who & Entwistle). When the TB Pro is solo's there's even a smidgen of Stingray lurking.

I feel that the control VBT loom would benefit from a @KiOgon upgrade to exploit the full potential of the Pups.

Weight is around 3.7Kgs.

For £350 it's a handsome bass, sounds great, reminds me of the '67 I once owned and is very close to the '64 I always wanted.

I have read all the stuff regarding the p××s poor marketing launch but I am very content and pleased with this reissue that sounds and feels a great bass. BTW the neck profile is bang on like my Epiphone Alan Woody Rumble Kat. ( Forgot to say that the Newporter fits the Rumble Kat hard case "snugly")

Congrats Epiphone for offering such a great Newport reissue.

Does it sound anywhere near an SG Bass ?

Yes, I own a 2005 Gibson SG bass and the neck Pu soloed it's virtually the same tone and range. With the TB Pro soloed there is a wider range of tones on offer compared to the SG bridge Pu. The SG is VVT and the Newport is VBT and it's possible to get similar tones from both but it seems to me that there are more tonal variations on the Newporter. I don't think , in a blind test, anyone would have a keen enough ear to tell the two apart. ( mind you I have tinnitus in both my 70 year old ears!!)

I also own a 1969 Gibson EB3 (slot head type) and NEITHER sounds like that!!!!

That's good to know , thanks John 👍

I had an SG Bass a few years ago which I regret selling , so this might be a good budget option..

Can I ask - in what way does that vary?

On a purely theoretical level (owning none of these basses), the neck pickup on the original EB-3 is a mudbucker, a monstrous ~30kOhm humbucker.  The neck pickup on the SG is a Gibson TB+ in disguise.  The Epiphone presumably has the same Epiphone "sidewinder" they've been using for decades.  The TB+ and sidewinder are probably quite a bit closer to each other than being anything like the mudbucker in terms of sheer amount of windings and DC resistance.

For sonic adjectives, I'll wait for the actual owner to chip in.

They both lack the low thunder that kicks in when you select the neck Pu with the filter on the '69.

4-Positon selector switch, Neck solo; Neck solo with filter; both PUs; bridge solo. VT for both Pups

Creates the low end thunder🙂

I like the sound of that.  How does it manage this - I assume it is some sort of capacitor?*  Or something?

*I apologise.  This makes it sound like I know what I am talking about - I am clueless.

What does the choke do?

It's a filter, but instead of your typical high pass filter as found in a tone control (using a capacitor, typically), it was intended as a notch filter (using an inductor), blocking some midrange frequencies and letting everything else through.
