Low tuning

There probably is a context in which it would be useful but not terribly frequently. There are two pipe organs in the world with a 64' stop, which gives an 8Hz fundamental, though there are more that synthesise this overtone series without the fundamental by combining 32' and 21'1/3 stops. So not really a usable note on its own and the times you would want it underpinning a big chord etc are few and far between.

Now that I have a five I'm finding the low B string pretty damned useful and I could see myself occasionally using notes below low B if there were no practical considerations. As it is the extra string or different tuning required are for me too much hassle for the few occasions I'd want to go lower but your taste and musical context may vary. Below low F# the law of diminishing returns gets really vicious, especially when it comes to intonation, string tension and amplification.

Man.. that's over a quarter of an inch thick.. beyond the bounds of my tastes!
Wouldn't mind a go just for the interest though.

Anyone wanna hear it being played???

I must admit, even as a total ERB zealot...this is now in nutter territory...utterly mad, probably pointless..12.98Hz..I mean what cab is even recreate that as an audiable note AND be transportable to a gig???
I read somewhere on the net that the open low F# on a 7/8 string resonates at 23Hz

with the lower limit of human hearing being 20Hz

so anything below that is useless
Hmm... to be honest, I would have thunk that if you're getting an actual F# then it'd be lower than 20Hz mark. Which begs the question, can you still call it an F# if you can't hear the tone and its just a mass of vibration rumbling through the floor!?!

Edit: just seen the overtones stuff. Bit beyond me but would suggest you can hear some kind of note in there. lol.
This IS the only actual REAL cutting edge of Bassplaying, right now.
Not that it needs any introduction... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=137 ;o) But I find the low F# very useful and aurally exciting (??) when those low notes make my Hifi sub sing! - I have played in bands with the same keyboard player for years now. He's an amazing player and really likes to make use of his full range of sounds. Naturally, when he sweeps down in to those sub bass tones, I wanna be there too. It's another reason why I put Doodle together with Jon.

So, yeah.. low F# then!
