Picked up my daughter's Encore electric guitar over the break and I've been playing it more than my basses... I've had so much fun going back to stuff I used to do... power chords, blues licks...
Guitar's more fun at home - but I know what I'd rather play at a gig.

[s]The drums[/s] Bass, of course! ;)
waynepunkdude joe strummer used a tele punk as you can get in the mainstream style
Muddy Waters, Steve Cropper all play Teles... Jimi Page played a tele on the early Zep albums before getting diverted by the Gibson...

anyway... the local shops haven't got a telecaster in my price range... I've seen an SX strat starter pack for £99 in the shop...

this one:

although as it there in the local shop, I can try it and don't have to pay P&P or wait...

Will be trying it out on Friday otherwise it's wait a couple of months more to save up some more and just start playing some of those more expensive teles they do have in the shop until I find one that feels right...

I have a Telecaster Custom, a Telecaster Thinline, a 1959 Strat, a 1958 Les Paul Standard, a Les Paul Junior, a Firebird, a Gretsch, a Rickenbacker 360-6 and a 360-12, Gibson ES-335, ES-175, and Super 400, an Epiphone Casino, a Martin 6-string and 12-string, and a Dobro.

That's what the manual for my Variax 300 tells me I've got, anyway.

Those Variaxes any good - that's to say, how 'realistic' do they sound?

I think they sound pretty realistic. I mainly use the acoustic models and they do sound like electroacoustics (they don't sound like an acoustic does, er, acoustically). But as I've got cloth ears, I just had a quick look for reviews on That Interweb, and there seems to be a consensus that the models are at least reasonable.

Incidentally, all the Variax solid-body six-strings use the same electronics, so it's nice that the one I found suited me best was also the cheapest. ;)

Playing a Telecaster worked out ok for Bruce Springsteen and Steve Cropper! Tom Morello rocked one in Rage Against The Machine too. Don't let all these comedy indie bands ruin a perfectly fine axe for you!!

I've been playing loads of guitar myself lately, mostly for acoustic gigs we've been doing. It's my main songwriting weapon at home too, it probably gets more playtime than the basses. They're all just a means to an end though, right? Like Bilbo said, it's still making music ;)

Thank you for that - I've seen some reviews, but I'd always trust a user over a journo, and a BC-er over a user.

Glad it came up a bargain.

Cheers!

got it...

went down the shop this evening... had a play on the SX strat and found it did the business and the price was right... £99 got me a white strat with strap, real gig bag, electronic tuner, bag of picks, starter DVD and a 10 Watt practice amp...

Have serious doubts about the claimed 10 Watts... the power consumption figure is give as 12 W... no amp is that efficient...

I suspect it's really 10 Watts Peak Program Power rather than RMS... probably really only 3 Watts RMS.

i've been playing a lot more electric than bass .......... been out of bands for 4 years and i can't really write on bass so well.

built a reverse head strat from parts on ebay with dimarzio pickups and i play into my PC through a POD2. sounds good!

quite useful if you've written something and you can play it "at" the guitarist rather than writing charts or explaining.

Is that because guitarists can't read charts and only understand grunting?
Fair point well made. He's butchered that Tele.

Yet another reason to dislike Coldplay.
Erm... if I´m not mistaken that´s Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead. Nothing wrong with Radiohead AT ALL. ;)

Ok, time to come out of the closet as well - I started playing guitar last summer at the ripe age of 41. GAS being what it is, I currently have (in order of appearance) a Simon & Patrick Songsmith Folk, a Ibanez Artcore (E-335 clone, forgot the model) and a - yes! - Fender HW1 Telecaster I got for a great price on eBay. Crackers, all of them.

I´m also guilty of playing more guitar than bass these days...
Sorry but the Tele can't recover from this

I think the Squier versions take the duché bag image away from them.
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo you’re on thin ice man. Don’t be dissin’ Johnny Greenwood. The guy is a f***ing legend and plays in the best band in the world (IMO!!). I think that picture is f***ing great – an iconic rock star in his prime playing an iconic guitar that has become synonymous with his name. Amazing guitarist and an amazing guitar.

On the topic of guitars I'll be taking mine to Jon Shuker soon to get some work done on it. Getting an extra fret put on, full setup and fret dress to sort out the feel, something to help with slight neck dive, and also getting the full Ghost piezo + midi bridge system.

Oh... it's a Telecaster ;)

Mark

P.S. I did want to get a sustainiac/sustainer put in it too, but apparently there's an issue (mentioned on their site) with having a sustainiac in combination with the telecaster bridge pickup. Something to do with the extreme slant of the pickup. Oh well. I just need to find my ebow again.

I've also been neglecting my bass playing a tad of late. I've sold a couple of my bass effects, and have a couple more in the ads section about to go on ebay. And I've joined a covers band as lead guitarist, and bought a nice sized pedalboard for the several pedals I'm planning on getting for guitar. I'm also GASsing for Orange and Fender tube guitar combos which should both be obtainable in the not too distant future, and some nice Seymour Duncan 'buckers for my SG. Maybe an electro-acoustic too.

As for bass I'm just getting another Sansamp VT Bass pedal for now. To be fair though, I started playing both around the same time, and compared to bass I've hardly touched a guitar for the past 7 years or so (apart from the past month). It's time the six-string got some action.

One thing that's surprised me, is it didn't really take too long to pick up where I left off even after all this time. But regardless, I still consider myself a bassist first and foremost. I've 2 bands and another in the making for bass and just the covers band as a guitarist. I don't think I'll ever turn to the dark side completely.
Wider, leather or soft-backed strap? (First time I've heard of tele neck dive )
I've played a few with neck dive before. Easily done with a lighter than average body and such a short upper horn. It's only mild, but I like my instrument to have a good 30-40 degree angle relative to the floor, and I like it parallel to the plane of my body, not tucked under my picking arm as most guitarists do. I've put a wider soft strap on (Levy's) that helps, but its not the best solution. Repositioning the strap pin is one option, I've done that on my j-bass. Lightweight tuners is another.

I enjoy guitar and I'm not bad, but I'm better as a bassist. I love the level of control you have over the band as a bassist, and I know how to use that to great effect. Guitarists have some melodic/harmonic say, and a little rhythmic control over a band, but the bassist naturally commands more authority on that side of things.
