Stevie’s 12” FRFR Cab Build Thread (Basschat Cab v3)

Recommended Posts

Some more progress on my cabs....

Two cabs now built and ready to have edges sanded and rolled. The bottom cab is going to only have the 12" driver in - though I will fit a horn with a blanking plate over the mouth, so if at some point in the future I want to turn it into a full range cab it can be done without getting the jigsaw out. Decided to "hand" the front baffles.

OMG why haven't I done that with my router, such an obvious idea, and your workshop is so clean and tidy compared with mine. :)

I can't claim credit for that - it is @Cosmicrain (Mike Walsh) who is making them for me as a HUGE favour using the remaining bits of ply he had left as I said earlier in the thread...

Anyway, Mike has taken pity on me, and has offered to put the cabs together for me. I should stress that he is doing this as a favour to me - he is NOT going to make any of these cabs commercially, and doesn't have much left in the way of the poplar ply anyway. Stevie's flatpack kits are a much more sensible way to go!

...so it's Mike workshop that's the tidy one - mine is still in bits due to too many other (house related) projects needing doing first...

That big roll of Marshall covering and two big tins of Evostik make more sense now.🙂 I'm really looking forward to seeing this tolex-covered version.

+1 great idea - I've got a small shop-bought router table but it's too small for this kind of work, this setup looks way more flexible and a better use of space! 👍

I looked at those square handles but was not sure how well they were sealed. Presumably they are fine?

No, they are being done in between Mike's "proper" work, so have to take a back seat. Hopefully quite soon, though!

Yes - particularly with the rebate and tolex tucking under for them to seat into. I know Mike used to use them when he was building cabs without any problems.

Wouldn't it be easier to paint the baffle rather than tolex it?

Possibly, though I think Mike usually tolexes them. We'll see what he comes up with!

He does indeed Richard. My Zoots are carpet covered but tolex on the front baffle.

...and just to reiterate - Mike is building these for me to repay a favour and has used up his last stock of lightweight ply.... he is not going to build them commercially!
