sure I do dave. :D
the sei replaced 2 basses and if someone wants to buy my 1984 guild pilot no. 62 with pickguard and full maple neck, then I can cut down to 4 basses and won't miss anything. :D ( well , I would miss the pilot, though. :unsure: just no use for it any more)

i ve tried couple of sei at bass gallery, i wasen't impress at all , the action was horrible and felt horrible , they where second hand , so i don't know if they need it to have some job done. hopefully one day i ll try another one and change my mind about them.they do look amazing though

Bear in mind a second-hand bass will usually be set up as the previous owner wanted it to be (which may be nothing like you like it) and temperature, humidity etc in a shop can play havoc with set-ups at the best of times. My Alembic, which was the best-playing bass I've ever played, went all over the place when I left it at the Gallery for a while when I had it up for sale. Remember Martin will set up anything you buy how you want it.

All the Seis I've had have had amazing action and have played as well as anything out there. There's always a chance that the basses may not suit though, in the same way that I don't get on with many other basses that people love (e.g. Fender Jazz) . Nothing works for everybody.

Like the previous poster said, they would have been set up for the previous owner. You know your basses, and they're set up for you.
I just bought a beautiful Sei Jazz. It was set up quite nicely when I bought it, but after a bit of adjustment it's now brilliant.

Makes me think that I need to take some better pics of my own Sei Baby!

This was commissioned from Martin in the early 1990s. It's a flamboyant headleass 6 with custom string spacing that meant waiting months for a custom built bridge and pickups, but it was worth the wait! It's perfectly balanced and has tone like only a Sei can make. The facing is Burr Walnut, with a maple core, but uniquely with thin veneer layers of stained maple to add an ever so subtle 'coachline' stripe. The neck is a laminate of maple and wenge and the finger board is ebony with leds. I dedicated the bass to my late brother who left me enough money to have the bass built. So there's an engraved brass plaque on the 12th fret - so I can never sell it.

Sorry I don't have a better picture - I will fix that soon!

  • 2 weeks later...

I was very privileged to play a fellow basschatters Sei Jazz yesterday and I havent been able to get it out of my head since.

I had some Sadowsky GAS after trying on in Newcastle last week but that just vanished as soon as I saw kjb's Sei yesterday. I cant see any sensible reason why anyone would pick a Sadowsky Metro over a Sei which often go for less secondhand than a new or even used Metro.

I have to have one now, so I am starting to save and once I am part of the way there my Stingray 5 is going. Until then i shall continue to flick through this thread endlessly.

Let me know if any Sei owners want to sell a 5 string Jazz...

I couldn't agree more - I am still absolutely loving both my Sei basses - the 5 string single cut is not only a great looking bass but it's a real workhorse too - I gig it regularly and last night I ran it through a completely sh*tty Torqe guitar amp, that looked horribe and had the most basic EQ set up - treble, bass and volume - and I still got a really sweet, rich tone from the bass, full of creamy mids and nice rounded lows - the bass simply rocks.

Re Sei Jazz basses - they are utterly wonderful - why you'd spend 2.5 - 3K on a Sadowsky when you could have Martin custom make you one to your exact spec for the same money or slightly less I have no idea - my 4-string is killling and looks the biz too - I love this bass:

Investing in a Sei is a wise move - they only improve with age and will pay for itself in a couple of years and will be yours for life!

Time to show my headless Original 5 I think. Made in 2003 for Whynot, but bought from him around 3-4 years ago.

Walnut facing with a Mahogany core (which Martin assures me is quite unusual);
The usual 7-ply Wenge/Maple neck;
OBP-3 preamp, can't remember the pups (ALAN?)
Blue L.E.D.'s (not working for some time now but since I've never used them it's no biggie for me).

Basses come & basses go, but this one's going with me into the pine box!

Enjoy:
