Sei's rock... it's that simple :)

Lovely couple of new Jazz's there - the buckeye one is pretty sick - perhaps a little extreme but a stunner all the same...

I'm just getting into my midi-enabled Single Cut now - the bass itself just keeps feeling, sounding and playing better and better - if you do invest in a Sei they really do improve with age - and Martin's always there to give them a little TLC if anything needs looking at - after all the playing these babies get... they are hard to put down!
There are a couple of used Sei Jazzes at the Gallery now and they are very well priced. I am seriously tempted by two of them. I have had quite a few basses over the years but ever since I picked up Bassist magazine 10 years ago when I started playing and saw a Sei Jazz in an advert I knew that was the bass for me. I need to do something about getting one soon.
There's an amazing 5-string Sei Jazz there in Candy Apple Red, with an ebony fingerboard and blocks, with Basslines pickups. Give that one a go, you'll be blown away. HUGE sound. :)

I have just had a look at it, stunning! just a little bit out of my budget. I emailed and asked for a rough Idea on the value of my Overwater as a trade and I would need about 1k on top :) Ah well keep saving, one day, it will be mine, oh yes......

Martin is a true Master at his craft, and the fishtail on this thread is amazing. I got the idea from ken lawrence and Carl thompson, so I aint the first to do the fishtail or the last! Got to get down the Gallery soon and have a chat to the guys, Don Richardson took his RIM fishtail 5 fretless down to the Gallery during time off on the west end and they loved it, so it was great to have feedback from Martin.

Cheers,

Robbie.

Hey peeps

I know this thread doesn't get updated much - but when it does...

Just check this new arrival out - I'm sorry I don't know the owner though I did see this bass in production, but this is what Seis are all about - sheer jaw dropping craftsmanship and attention to detail - and they sound and play amazong too:

That thing is sick... I hoped I wouldn't see another Sei that would make me think about getting another - fact is I simply can't afford it - Martin and John strike again...

And here's a vid of some Sei Single cut noodling I made recently

Cheers guys

Mike

Oooooo...

I bought a 2nd hand 5-string fretted (Jazz shape) Sei only a few months back from The Gallery (to go with my Sei Jazz fretless) with a similar lacewood/amboina (never know which one it is or if they're the same wood) top to that beauty and I find myself gazing into the grain in a hypnotic way everytime I pick it up (sad I know). I love the way the wood looks like the end of the bass has been dipped in something to give the different colouring to the wood.

I can definitely vouch for the craftsmanship of the Sei's, they are very special. Whoever got that one has a lovely instrument.

hi guv my headless 6 is fate pure and simple.
its no 20!!
i swapped my thumb 88 six through neck with this sei.
littleal had this and he wanted a thumb six.... i couldnt play my thumb six due to shoulder injury everyone on the site was saying just eep the sei and pick up a thumb six but my thumb was a bit special (barts ,brass nut, mint for age and id had it for around 15yrs)..... so against alll odds i drove to the ilse of wight (obviuosly got on a ferry ) allan picked me up we had coffe tried each others basses smiled at each other and swapped!!!!

all this was done at like 4.30 am as allan worked shifts ,i then drove back to southend worked a day drove to harlow got this baby out of the case played a gig (was up for around 26hrs) ....legendary bass,,, illl never sell this baby.

and before we met we made a deal that if we didnt like each others basses we wouldnt have swapped!!!! so i was taking a huge leap of faith.
any other persons than bass players wouldnt have done all this, alan still has my thumb and has had an ebony fretboard put on it!!!

and ive had a shack 18v preamp put bk into the sei!

the sei is the one , i love my other basses but the flamboyant gets alot of atention and love from me, id like to get it refinished as the finish is a bit worn but its got lots of character.
glad you like matey.

Now that's a good story :)

4.30am! Is that when the little hand is between the 4 and the 5 and the big hand points at the 6? I haven't seen that for many years. I think you're right. Only bass players would meet to swap at that time of day.

That's a really lovely bass as is the other Sei further up the page.

Martin stopped putting numbers sometime after number 69. Shame as the little brass plate is kinda cool.

Ziggy you must have had a few red bulls to keep you awake for that gig Dude!!
yepmate the gig was mad
the stage was so small i was glad to hve the headless sei, i lent up against the walll for most of the gig and i think at some pionts i was drifting off to sleep!!!!!

So I popped in to see Al & Martin today ostensibly to pick up my '78 J which had been 'sorted' by Martin.

He'd also cleaned up my Sei original which Al has up for sale.

I mentioned to Al how much I liked the Flamboyant 4 he had and he made me a good offer & I just couldn't resist & walked away with it :)

Another fabulous example of Martin's work - I've wanted a headless flamboyant for ages and this one is particularly nice:

Ash body with Aboina facings and a lovely ebony board.

Thanks Ady,

I've been playing off and on all evening - it's got a really nice growl to it, quite a different sound from anything else I have. Eq on the amp needs a fair bit of tweaking compared to my usual settings.

It's just so well built, Martin really is a master craftsman :)
Jealous you guys.

I've lusted after an Original 5 for years now :)
My ld one is at the Gallery right now - it's a beauty:

http://www.thebassgallery.com/product_deta...e=Bass%20Guitar

Very early build and hsa a few features not found in the newer ones - not least the lovely purfling around the finger board (hard to see in these pics).
Molan, what's the thing between the bridge and the pickup?
Is it the brass coloured bit?

If so it's a 'label' with serial # etc - he stopped doing them at some point as they were very fidly & used some nasty chemicals to etch the brass plate.
That's the one. I thought it was either than or a Roland Pickup.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Martin gave up on serial numbers because he didn't see the point as every bass was different!
I actually had a chat with Martin about this yesterday and the principal reason he stopped inserting the brass placque was becuase of the chemicals used to manufacture it were really not very nice.

I don't think he holds detailed records of every bass because of the individuality.

From memort the Original is something like #11 or #18 so it's a very early one. My new Flam is #60 so still early(ish).
