I'm intrigued by these.

I've heard of them, then I saw a photo by Dave Swift on Facebook, now Steve Lawson has one.

I've been looking at them on youtube, and they sound amazing.

They're way out of my price range though. Is there anything much cheaper that comes close to the sound of these ?

Here's Steve's pic from Facebook, it looks lovely doesn't it ?

If you're looking for tubey, you could try something like the Arkham Octling (now discontinued but due to be replaced soon): http://arkhamsound.com/octling.html

OR there's the Noble preamp: http://nobleamps.com/preamps/

Both quite a bit simpler than the Monique but apparently both excellent in their own way.

I like the Noble (I could use one of those....) shame there's no internal shots, I'd really like to see what I might be buying......?

:)

vvvvv are the mirrors included in the price?

There have been a few arty shots on their instagram page of the internals. Impressive packing job on an enclosure that size!

All I need now is a successful career as a pro session bassist in LA to justify [s]buying it[/s] giving me one for free if I let them use my name in display ads...

Fixed for you.

How can they make the preamp look so boutique, but the integrated amp so cheap?
Obviously stand-alone is easier to tart up than rack mount, but still...
I wouldn't say cheap... but I know what you mean. Utilitarian would be how I'd describe it.

I had a Monique Preamp - it was fantastic.

I sold it when I realised that the exquisite tone was wasted in band conditions my co-workers being drummers, guitarists and keyboarders

Always a risk that. Just enough to keep them (and the punters?) happy is one way to think about it, but does that satisfy you?

I've only ever played with one guy (a drummer oddly enough) who payed more than a passing interest in my sound, but the problem was he then always insisted I kept things the same. So if I brought a different bass he'd throw a strop, added some nice effects, same thing.

Quote not working on this connection..

I'm satisfied....Well its not like the Mesa Boogie walkabout / Phil Jones Bass 14x5" setup that I now use is second division stuff and I've found spending time refining my playing pays me more dividends that refining my tone plus there's only so much time in the day.

I love the clarity and portability of my PJB Double 4. What I'm after is retaining that clarity, but adding a nice valve organicness (new word) to it, but a lot, lot cheaper than the Jules Monique :).

Has anyone tried both the Jules Monique and the Dave Hall VT1 ?
