Raffle off your bass?

Just an idea that came into my head - for those of you who are having a hard time selling a bass, why not start a raffle?

eg. bass is up for £1,000

sell 50 tickets for £20 each

that way you get yer cash, and someone gets a great bass for only £20

there would be difficulties with trusting the owner, and how it would be monitored, and even if people want to stmp up £20 for a 1/50 chance of winning etc. but I'm sure someone respected on here could do it

I think you'd need a licence

What if you don't manage to sell many tickets? You could end up having to let the bass go for a lot less than you want to.

Suppose you could register demand first until you then decide to raffle?

Tbh i just saw this done with a charity the other day

Actually i'm looking at the regulations on these wouldn't bass chat come under a small society ... im bored its lunchtime :-P

3. Meaning of society and local authority lotteries Society lotteries

3.1 Society lotteries are lotteries promoted for the benefit of a non-commercial society. Such societies are organisations that have distinct aims and objectives and meet the definition of a non- commercial society set out in the Act.

3.2 A society is non-commercial if it is established and conducted for charitable purposes, for the purpose of enabling participation in, or of supporting, sport, athleticsor a cultural activity for any other non-commercial purpose other than that of private gain.

This seems to require registration but no fee's for that registration unless the lotteries .

may in a single society lottery exceed £20,000,

or the proceeds of previous lotteries in the same calendar year have already reached or may, taking into account the lottery in question reach £250,000 in one calendar year.
The other caveat is the cost of registering for basschat because its a " REMOTE organisation" looks to be around £40 and at least 20% of the proceeds must go to the organisation in every lottery So .... lets say a £1000 bass would be 50 tickets @ £20 800 pounds of the proceeds would go to the owner of the bass and 200 to bass chat to make it legal.

I VERY much doubt one of the organisers at basschat wants to go to the hassle of registering for a remote operators licence and manage these kind of sales ... and that too many people would be happy losing a 20% cut of the sale proceeds to basschat every time one of these went up ,people would want it rolled into the costs of ticket sale.

I'd say this is a non starter and anyone doing it on facebook / other unregistered Charity is actually breaking the law unless they are registering with the gambling commission :-P

On a related note:
There was a trend for this sort of thing a few years back. People would have a fancy car as a prize and have some simple looking game of chance to win it, e.g. roll 6 sixes and win the car. Prices were set at 50p. The chance of winning is 1/46,656, so strict probability dictates that your car should cost no more than £23,000. As there is a 10% chance of someone winning after 'only' ~4,500 goes, then the organiser takes out insurance against anyone winning the car because, in all likelihood no one will win it at all.
Still quite low income for relatively complex process.

Or just do what they do on TV - ask a stupidly easy question to make it technically a game of skill.
