Apparently it sounds a lot like Death Magnetic according to Kirk.

Oh well - 7 years in the making (so far) and they are still in that territory.

Also interesting to note that they are recording it piecemeal - Hetfield and Ulrich doing the drums and guitars in full, and then Kirk goes in to do his stuff. That sounds like a joyful experience, and will be a great reminder of why they wanted to be in band.

I'll repeat myself, but somebody needs to tell them the King has no clothes on, and they need to stop doing gimmicky festival shows, with fans on stage, crapping on about 'the Metallica family' all the time, - rehashing the same set list they've done for 20 years, and give up the now almost complete descent into the Spinal Tap parody, 'chicken in the basket' casino circuit act.

Get away from your families, your millionaire toys, your ass kissing personal assistants : get into a room, jam as a band, and give yourself a deadline by which you have to have it finished - and record it as a band - live, on analogue. I'd even suggest another Garage inc. would be a good starting point - get back to playing what you loved as a kid, and for the joy of doing it. Give the inevitable money to a charity.

I feel like I'm watching an old friend kill himself through an addiction (in this case to bullshit and ego), and can do nothing to help.

Intervention required. Very sad.

I'm surprised they're recording a new album to be honest, I read an article recently about why it's just not worth big, legacy acts like Metallica making new records.

Basically, recording costs a lot of money and these days you simply don't make as much money from album sales, it's all about the live shows where the money's made, and Metallica fans don't want to hear new songs at gigs, they want to hear the classics from the 80s and 90s and will pay well to hear them.

So why bother spending a lot of money recording an album which is probably going to be derided as nothing like as good as their first five records and then maybe bring out one or two songs at gigs sprinkled amongst the rest of the set.

I do agree with you that I'd love to see them do a new record with a producer that won't stroke their egos, tell them they're old, fat, lazy and beat a decent record out of them.

i think the rehashing an old set list is harsh, they havent played the same set in quite sometime! yes there are similar songs as they have to do the hits.

im interested to hear there new stuff, death magnetic was not a bad album, there i said it! people need to deal with the fact robs in there and writing. atleast metallica are open to trying different things, having the fans on stage is i think a good idea what a memory for those fans?

Agreed. DM is the best music they've made since Justice, and if it follows a similar blueprint (long songs, complex arrangements, hostility) I'll probably like it.

Always got the feeling that a lot of people just haven't forgiven them for not just packing it all in when Cliff died...

Always was the way Metallica worked, at least until St. Anger.

I liked death magnetic I'll buy the new album regardless
To be fair they have taken chances with their music over the years which haven't always been accepted by their hardcore fans.
The black album and loads took a little while to grow on me but I can appreciate some of that music now.

Interesting comments, as ever on BC.

I think I'm just frustrated that they are a great band and they just seem to be selling themselves short. The 'Metallica machine' is, and always has been, a well oiled and planned marketing strategy, but for me they risk becoming a parody of themselves, and that's a great shame, as I still think they have something great to contribute. But, whilst they are wrapped up in their own little bubble, that's not going to happen, and hence my comments about getting in a room, jamming some stuff out and working to a deadline. Easy to forget Rob's been in the band nearly 12 years now, and in that time they've put out 1 album which he's played on (Death Magnetic), 2 if you count the Lou Reed collaboration 'Lulu', or 3 if you include the soundtrack of old material for 'Through the never'.

As an example of my 'same old set list' comment : here is a link to their Rock in Rio set from September this year :

http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/metallica/2015/cidade-do-rock-rio-de-janeiro-brazil-6bf49e56.html

1 track from Death Magnetic

Nothing from St Anger

5 from the Black album, 2 from Load/Reload and 2 covers, with the balance from albums prior to 1992, (14 of the 17 track set list).

I fully accept that punters want the hits, but - they haven't reached the Stones' heritage act' status yet, where they've almost become their own tribute act, and I think its a sad reflection of their catalogue if they don't want to dip into anything that less than nearly 20 years old.

I'll buy the new album, but I probably wont bother with a concert, as I've seen them doing all the old stuff before, and its got to the stage now where the 'ad libs' are carefully scripted, and for me that takes the immediacy and the true audience/artist connection out of it, and turns it into cabaret.

As a bit of a thrash metal fan i wrote Metallica off aeons ago. I have always been disappointed at their gigs as they imho were never the tightest band and could never reproduce the intricacies they record.....whereas with Anthrax, Slayer, Testament etc you got exactly what it said on the tin.

I can pretty much guess what the Metallica new album will sound like. Crunchy riffs in E at 190bpm with lots 'Yeaa-eah' over the top. Boring.

Metallica are brilliant, I don't know why they are so scared to take risks with their live sets, surely they can put Creeping Death away for just 1 gig and replace it with something less heard but no less great like 'Broken, Beat & Scarred' or Shortest Straw?
