From my own experience I'd disagree. When my S2000 arrived it had 30-95 strings on it, together with a load of buzz on the neck whenever I played it. Imediately put on a set of 35s and no buzz whatsoever. Therefore, the truss rod adds the flexibility to use whatever guage of string you wish. So I'd hardly say they are a "ridiculous idea on graphite necked basses" Rob does know what he is doing. As far as I know, the graphite used for Status necks these days is a lot more flexible than it was in older graphite necks.
I've also heard that the extra movement of lighter strings can cause some buzzing on older flatter necks, I use 130 105 80 60 40s on my basses so I've never had a problem.

Just got this 6 string S2 Classic Thruneck from Bass Direct. It's superb.

It has an extra pick up on it for for extra bottom end grunt. Also away from standard is extra bass and mid sweep knobs.
It also has blue front and side LEDS. First rehearsal with ti tonight and if all goes well first gig with it tomorrow night.

Not had to use the rod in my Streamline yet, even when moving up from 30s to 40s but it did use to tweak the rod on my, now departed Jazz with a Status fretless neck to get fine relief adjustment. I'd generally consider the rod a positive.

Got this yesterday.. it's not officially mine yet though - need to decide if I prefer this or my Overwater ! Mark at Bass Direct has been very accommodating to the fact my life is far too busy to go to Warwick to test it out lol.

+1. I've played several graphite-necked basses (not just Status) where the relief was completely wrong for me, and as above there is the issue of changing string gauge. Yes, you can take the frets out and have the board planed but isn't it just easier to have a trussrod?

FWIW the myth of forever-stable graphite necks is exactly that. Of my 4 Statii one had a warped neck, and I mean warped. I've also known owners of Zon and Modulus basses amongst others that have had similar problems. Great idea when it works though, I love it in principal.

So, here's my latest arrival.
I'm reliably informed that it's a 1994 Series II - Graphite body, Blue Sims LEDS.
Taking it to rehearsals tomorrow night for a good blast. I doubt it will replace the Miller Jazz as my main bass but not bad for a back up and encore bass!

Nice, was that the one off ebay ? If so you beat me to it, I'd asked for some better pictures but they didn't come through in time :-(

Yes, it was. I admit that the pictures weren't great but I decided to take a punt anyhow. It's actually in pretty good nick and all is good.....but I guess you didn't want to hear that :)

Looks fantastic! But is that not the Matrix body shape? Possibly a one off custom graphite bodied Matrix with soapbar pickups?

Anyway, here are a couple of shots I have of the Series 2 that will be travelling to me soon. I hope the previous owner doesn't mind me using them but they are better than my usual naff iphone efforts!

Quite simply one of the most beautiful Status basses I've ever seen. I have dreamed of owning an 80's Series 2 for years, but I never thought I would find one with a maple facing like this. It's the best look for them, IMO, the contrast between the black graphite and lighter wood looks amazing and it really brings the accent line and the chamfered edge next to the bridge to life, much better than similar models with say, a walnut facing or another dark wood; not to say that they don't look great because they do!
Very nice Series II, congrats Chris!
Stenobass, if I recall correctly you have the Series II with the lacewood top? If so, that comment is very much appreciated as that Series II is one of the best I've seen so I see my bass is attracting compliments from those in a position of knowledge and taste! :)

I am listening to my Level 42 records in time for it arriving on friday and I think I will give it a good playing when it gets here. It hasn't been played since it last went to Status so it should be cleaned to perfection and set up excellently, as the last keeper has merely held the bass and not played it. All I have to do now is hide the Kubicki, because if my lass spots three basses on the landing she'll know I've bought another one!

Very nice bass, Chris is right about the Matrix body shape but it seems there was a Matrix Series 2:

http://www.statii.com/status_cats/adverts/...rix_series2.jpg

which is probably different to the original Series II.... all very confusing. :)

The all graphite finish is pretty unusual though on an early headed Status and could well be a one off, although Rob is now making headed all graphite S2 Classics if you specify.

Edit: I would date it at '93 because the bridge doesn't have slots in, you have to feed the strings though a hole at the back.... I might be wrong though!

How are you getting on with it?
All of the "all graphite" instruments feature a graphite shell over either solid foam filling, or an alder block. Even the original S2000 was made in this way. To my knowledge, the only full composite instrument was the 4000/5000 series which was made of some kind of polymer but not graphite.

But there is something about the sound of the all graphite instruments. It has even more of the graphite 3D "shimmer" and growl than the full wooden/laminated bodies.

Rich.
The thing with those 'all graphite' instruments is they can be extremely harsh and bright. A little wood and graphite softens the sound ever so slightly and seems to give it a more characterful midrange.
That's why I like the all graphite ones. As Rich (Out To Play Jazz) suggests ones which are foam rather than wood encased in graphite. Harsh? Thank you. That's what I want. Virtually unlimited cutting brutality on tap. I don't have to use it and I frequently don't, but it has enabled me to have the requisite amount of cut when I need it in demanding situations. I've never experienced this from any other bass I've tried other than all graphite ones.

When I tried a Mark King (which was the graphite skin version) it just didn't have it though it was a fantastic bass. Even when I played a normal S2, it just wasn't the same. Hey, I'm biased. I love my buzzard. Plus I thought the Stealth I tried a few years ago was great as well. I fully suspect that I'm in a minority of one with this statement, but this is what does it for me. :)

That's fantastic.

A Status is next on my list of basses to buy.
