paulieaudiobloom Posted September 18, 2013 Share Posted September 18, 2013 Alright dudes. After recently having my US Fender Jazz stolen ( ) I'm in the market for a new one. Problem is that i'm little blinkered when it comes to choosing. It's either a Fender, a Fender or another Fender! I'm sure this train of thought is making me miss out on many an awesome bass. So have any of you guys got any suggestions? Here's a couple of clues.... It has to have the jazz profile neck (cocktail sausage fingers), Full scale. It has to have a modern rather than classic sound. The more frets the better but only four strings thanks. Traditional jazz bass body. Active or passive considered. Pref maple boards. Pref colourful basses. Candy apples, oranges, placid blues, blacks. Not keen on on naturals (unless the wood is special) or whites/creams. Dingus Posted September 18, 2013 Share Posted September 18, 2013 At the risk of being boring , the latest Fender American Standard Jazz Basses with the Custom Shop pickups ( post -2012) are great basses , in my opinion , and take some beating as a good all-round Jazz Bass that doesn't need any after-market upgrades to be at its' best . Failing that . the Sandbergs look good and very solidly built , but a lot of then can tend to be on the heavy side compared to recent Fenders , so look out for that if weight is an issue for you . Lozz196 Posted September 18, 2013 Share Posted September 18, 2013 If it has to be Fender, then going from the description I`d look at the Jazz Bass Deluxe, they go for about £800ish used. It has the most non-active actives I`ve ever heard, but which can turn the bass from 90% Precision (not a thing I`d often admit to) to Flea in an instant. Cairobill Posted September 18, 2013 Share Posted September 18, 2013 There is only one I would buy (after going through many, many Js) and that's the American VIntage 75 Reissue. There are some on the board I believe. Skinny neck, very good quality, aggressive tone, very pretty and a maple board. Make sure you buy a light one with no head dive and you're away... Dingus Posted September 18, 2013 Share Posted September 18, 2013 If you are willing to buy used then just keep an eye on the Basses For Sale section here on Basschat and I am sure something will take your fancy sooner or later . There are probably more Jazz- style basses out there than any other design , and Basschat is usually awash with them . Buying new you'd be paying more than £1k but they do offer a wide range of colours you can choose from so you should be able to meet your colourful requirement. On the other hand used the 4 strings usually change hands for around £700, but lately everybody seems to have sunburst jazzes for sale. No imagination... They have an unlimited amount of options open to you. My bass is has an ebony top, neck and fretboard, swamp ash body and scratch plate (which has been stained), with Wizard pick ups and J East Pre.
