Malt Shovel, Horsham

Not going to slag them off as I don't know the circumstances but we were booked in for last night months ago. Luckily our singer gets a local band newsletter though which came up with a different band being on. After chasing around trying to find out what was going on ( wrong phone numbers on web etc) turns out they knew nothing about us having changed hands earlier in the month. So beware if you're booked in there, it's possible there may be a cock up. Luckily she found out before the rest of the band who are not as local suffered the Bank Holiday traffic to head down. In the plus side had a nice quiet night in with girlfriend 😉

The band were booked into one if our regular gigs in Surrey. Get a phone call from the pub a few days before the gig, after weeks of fitting in rehearsals around holidays and work, stating that they are cancelling as it does not bring in enough cash for them.
One of the band members lives near the pub and wondered by on the cancelled Friday night to hear a DJ and Karaoke.....
Think we will bin chasing that gig again...
The annoyance is that we have a raft if corporate events coming up which are surprisingly good earners - so it is not like we are sh*t!!!! Or do a sh*t set!

It's been going through changes (and if you've never played there is a bugger to set up in).

Apparently the new manager is leaving the 'lease available' boards up all round the building 'til he has made the changes he wants to and is ready to relaunch, but I believe it is all a bit up in the air and definitely worth confirming before you travel.

January apparently :(

We last played there in May and were re-booked virtually straight away for Fridays gig. Strange that your mate was booked in January with no problem on return. Oh well it just goes to show its worth checking gigs in the days leading up to them.

That happened to us too. Was called Sat morning and Sat night cancelled. They were binning bands and doing disco/karaoke too. Costs the same but appeals to younger people with more money to spend. Although the bands I had seen play there were playing 'grandad' music so why they didn't just get some better bands in, I don't know.

We also have had a local change hands and after ringing several times and getting no answer our drummer went round and spoke to the new landlord who proposed 4 months of gigs straight off. Happy days!

 • 2 weeks later...

It does happen. We turned up to a gig once, not calling to confirm the day before or anything and found another band there too. They had got it muddled and double booked us. The other band were cool about it too and we split our sets and both played. Was quite good actually, there was more crowd than there would have been, we got to play and also got to see a good band at the same time.
Another time, we were booked in to play a social club gig but again didn't check it first. Turned up and they had the bingo on! We were turned away without so much of a sorry. We were young and green then so didn't complain!

I haven't played at the Malt Shovel in a couple of years, but we never had any trouble when we did.

You have to remember that pub gigs are the "amateur" end of the gigging world. These guys are landlords first and promoters second, and a lot of them aren't even very good landlords.

We always send posters a month before and call up to confirm a couple of weeks before a pub gig, and they still manage to cock it up.

The cover band didn't play last Friday because the pub wrote us in the book for 3 weeks ago. They ignored the posters and the first we knew about it was a "where are you" phone call at 9 o'clock on the wrong night.

We crossed 3 gigs off the list last year after they screwed us on dates, money and just bad attitude.
