Played at a jam in NYC this afternoon. The bass player who was up before me (Ross Daisomont) had a P/J Precision in 3TS, nice to look at, genuinely excellent tone and presence, one of the best Precisions I've heard.

I asked him later what bass it was. He said it was a Squier, and grimaced. I asked if it was a Vintage Modified or something and he said it wasn't. He and a friend went into downtown Manhattan a year ago looking for the bass of his dreams. He reckoned he'd played 25 basses that day, and finally he found what he was after.

Then he looked at the headstock and saw it wasn't a "real" Fender. He was about to hang it back up when his friend interceded and asked why he was putting it back.

Ross said, "Because it's a Squier."

His friend asked, "What would Stevie Wonder say?"

He bought the bass.

Pretty well spot-on there. Buy/keep THE bass that works best for you. At long last I`ve found mine. Long winding road it was, but great fun to travel down.

That's what I tell Mrs Dingus when she complains about a certain aspect of our relationship . It doesn't seem to stop her moaning on about spending a fortune on batteries , though .

Where was this jam night Jack? Might swing by in a week or two when I'm over!

That was the Lazy Sunday Afternoon jam at 78 Below, which is at 78th & Columbus on the Upper West Side.

Rather confusingly, despite being 78 Below the venue is actually just above 78th.

If you can't get up to the Upper West Side, or Sunday afternoon doesn't work for you, try the National Underground on Wednesday nights, Allen Street and Houston.

Incidentally, despite the temptation to pronounce "Houston" as either Hew-ston or Hoo-ston, the correct NY pronunciation is actually How-ston.

No, me neither.

Jack was a hell of a guy , solid player . I hope you have fun on your tour of the US Jack . Cheers . As for the comment " What would Stevie wonder say " was in reguard to its not what the bass looks like or its brand , its how it sounds ." Here are two cuts I did on my Accoustic bass , A Tacoma Thunder chief ( the company is out of bussiness so to bad for that ).
Just guitar and bass recorded on a android phone - Tunes played just one time prior - so - ITS LOSE !

FYI - The National Under ground does not have us there - We are not doing a open mic , If youd like to know where when we get it again . please send a email to [email protected] . Peace ....

 • 1 year later...

A great example of why you should never judge a book by its cover - when you find "the one", the instrument when everything you hve in your tolkit just clicks, when you feel an affinity towards the bass - you have to buy it.

I found my perfect bass 6 years ago, in my Warwick SS2 5er and no bass (even high end ones) ive played ever since seems just...well....not right.
