Cheers Nige. It's a mandolin & a guitar, all three of us play unison. I was the only one using an amp, the others just played acoustically & the guitar was furthest from the mic. Mandolin was the closest to it.

I've been having a listen to all the other posts, really good mix of stuff with some excellent playing.

Thanks :) he's got a great voice for West End, which is quite literally what he's currently involved in but man the pipes on him defy sense, I've not heard anything or anyone like him. I prefer a throatier dirtier vocal for stuff like this but I can't detract from the lad. Good idea for a thread too.

Aah, I mean I didn't play it on an actual bass, it's all sample based VSTs. I was going to actually record it but I was happy with the VST sound so it seemed unnecessary, but now it sounds kinda thin to my ears.

I have two, the first is Kit, from the first EP of two years ago, and it came very quickly. I had a crap iPhone recording from Kit of her singing and playing piano with the drummer on a leccy kit. This was the second part of the audition, to write bass lines for four songs. Kit told me she wanted staccato in the verses and long notes in the bridge and chorus. I had it done in a few hours, recorded and mixed it and sent it to her, she and the drummer loved them all, but this is my favourite for its lyrical nature and use of space and texture. They especially liked the trick low note in the middle section. This was the EP version I recorded at home over the studio mix for the EP which 51m0n later mixed and mastered beautifully for the EP. I love my tone, Warwick Corvette $$ into a POD X3 LIVE direct to desk.

My other is the one I did for the Basschat composition challenge last December. I had great fun composing it, and what I heard in my head pushed my playing technique to my limits. I really like the composition, the madness of the middle sections and the sensitivity of the final sections, I played to the story and I've never had so much fun with the bass, and guitar keys and drum programming, I had an absolute blast doing this :D

Although many of the tracks were roughly tried here in the UK the parts really only came together in the studio. Nothing very technical or exciting but that's not my style. I reckon the bass drives the song along nicely with a nice bit of tension from the use of 3rds in the verses. Stingray 5
through a Sansamp straight into the desk. There's a bit of fret rattle as the actioned had changed following the transatlantic flight.

When I was playing for Micky this was always a popular song - the alternative title is "Die You Bitch".

Thanks for listening Nige - very much appreciated. Aye, the first one's the only recording I could find of that tune (one of the few with the three of us 'together', despite being in three different countries) and I'm out of time with my mate on guitar in quite a few places, where I'd try to anticipate his timing. We used to joke about not using a drum machine, as it would only show us up. Groove Agent did just that! ;)

Very kind comments on 'Stranger', sir - means a lot as I've never really received compliments on my playing/lines. I'm content to play and if nobody notices, I've done my bit. (which is easy when the other two thirds of the band are the main attraction!) :)

Some nice stuff on here. I do not hugely enjoy listening to myself because I annoy myself when I hear my personal cliches etc but sometimes it comes together

One day I will own a pair of ATCs for my house. What was gratifying was that I managed to control my urge to play more than I needed to and just rumbled along at the bottom. It is self-control which is sadly lacking in much of what I do :( What usually happens is that I get comfortable playing what I had intended and look for ways to spice it up. Sadly I do not have the Pino "taste gene" so inveriably have to apologise 30 seconds into playback, turn on my heel and go in to do it again

This was done at home and the structure of the bass line ebbs and flows nicely. Nothing is more important than structure of a line for me, if I had the chops to play fast weaving complex chromaticisms around a vocal I would use them at all times obv, but if the line did not breath with the song I would just get angry with myself. This was one of those lines which you chuck down, feel that it is going well but get more and more nervous as the song progresses incase you mess up. You get to the end with the feeling of "phew, I might actually get away with that!"

I found it exciting! I think your line is lovely. It has real character, I could see someone playing it if you know what I mean, I had the same with Steve Soar's. Love the slightly ska bass feel over the non ska song, smooth tone as well. Yet again, not my bag musically, but I really enjoyed it! Thanks David :)

This is my favourite, purely for its simplicity, sorry about the quality but it is a copy from a tape of a tape x 2 then converted to mp3.

Was recorded for a single but never released in 1979(ish).

Oh mate, this is lovely! I lived in the Welsh wild west for a bit in the '80s and this first number gives me nostalgia overload :D Beautiful woody bass, beautifully played and very sensitive to the song.

The second is also splendid. Again, highly sensitive playing with gorgeous musicality. I can tell from your opening sentence what a sensitive bassist and person you are. And also probably under confident. Rejoice, there is real beauty and romance in your playing. :D Bloody marvellous playing and composition mate! I've been listening to your SC channel while writing this, there's some gorgeous music on there. Don't Leave Your Joy is fabulous!

[b]Steve-Soar[/b] - I love the tone you have on Breathing Underwater, really gritty. I'd have killed for that sort of sound when I started playing. The 10cc connection's ace!

[b]Bobbass[/b] - that's quite similar to some of the drop-D tuning songs my jam-buddy would come up with. We were always trying to out-do each other in the odd-timings/chord changes, but this generally resulted in my Jazz with light-guage strings sounding like a clanky floppy mess.

[b]GarethFlatlands[/b] - you said it yourself, your bass is absolutely locked with the drummer in 'The Cell'. A nice growl to the tone too, adding weight to the song.

[b]Lozz[/b] - classic P tone! Dolly Dynamite reminded me a little of the New York Dolls (Personality Crisis - one of my fave tunes of theirs) and the second one is pure Sir Horace Gentleman. Excellent stuff, sir.

[b]Xgsjx[/b] - that's a cracking bubbly line in Stars & Guitars. I really like the fast runs in 'My Old Friends'.

[b]Risingson[/b] - less is definitely more in this case and the bassline suits the mood of the song perfectly. I love the sound of bass and synth bass doubled up.

[b]4-Strings[/b] - that's a very catchy tune and your bassline is spot-on for it. Definitely Motown-ish.

[b]Nige[/b] - very tasteful line in 'You Always Did', I like the space you leave in it. A suitably 'tubby' tone too. 'You Can't Touch me Now' is bloody great! The fast runs you did in Part III are fabulous, especially the section immediately afterwards in Part IV! On the subject of playing in general, I've watched your Yes covers with the bitsa Electra bass - hat well and truly doffed.

This is a fairly accurate picture of the sort of music and basslines I was composing back in the late 90s. It starts a bit dubby and ends up as a manic filtered "synth" sound. It was all done with my Overwater bass going through multiple MIDI controlled effects. It's even a mix of finger style and pick playing.

I have always wanted to use a delay on bass live to create that pulsing effect but never trusted a drummer to hold it together unless there was a click involved. I love the way it drops off at the end of the phrases at the beginning - it really opens things up. Really nice use of texture.

It's not actually delay but a MIDI controlled filter opening and closing as the last note of the phrase sustains. And yes it's completely impossible to do without using MIDI synchronisation and a click for the drummer. That recording was actually done with just a couple of loops and some extra programmed drum hits, but we did play it live with one of the loops separated out into it's individual drum sounds and triggered from an electronic kit.

I bought an Adrenalinn specifically to do that and then............. ummm........... didn't. I am now not doing it with Mainstage and a Macbook :)
